Q: When installing Yosemite, received error "File system verify or repair failed"

When insalling Yosemite following download, I received an error stating "File system verify or repair failed". I rebooted, held command/R to enter disk utility in order to repair the disk, however the repair failed. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I received a similar alert about iTunes, after Yosemite was installed.  After some worrying and a bit of searching, this is what I did, and it worked for me!  I right-clicked iTunes in the dock & chose the option to Show in Finder.  I right-clicked the iTunes application line and moved it to the trash (and emptied the trash).  I then went to the site http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ where iTunes can be downloaded - either for Mac or Windows.  To my joy, the download retrieved iTunes with ALL of my music.  I hope it works for you.

I Am not sure what to do, I checked the utility desk while staring on the big X of the stopped install. I did desk verification because I cannot click the repair. Desk cannot be verified . I did permission verifocation and some tens of errors appeared, 2 in safari while the rest were in iTunes . I'm really annoyed, like I just want my laptop and my files without the need to drive long distance (3hours) to get to apple store .

I Am scared to do anything , I fear to lock the whole hard disk like the last time.

i Am also mad at apple staff who made this install , it would have been more courteous to perform desk verification bwfore this install lock, would it not?

I Don't have time to spend in trying to learn mac secrets now , it is really rude to lock people up in this dilemma as if everyone is an expert in mac glitches.

Hi guys. I had the same issue adding the fact that I also lost my trackpad ability to "click" so I had to use an USB mouse.

I went to Disk Utilities and run verify and repair only to find that my HD was imposible to fix. So my next move was erase and format and Vualá! I was able to recover Maverics using my Time Machine backup and after that to install Yosemite without problems. This also automaticly solved the issue with the trackpad.

    Wish you luck!

How do we escalate this to Apple? Do they read this stuff and provide an answer? I never had to deal with this type of issue in the past. I was actually going to pay to chat with them, but it costs $20.00. Re-installed Mavericks and will wait for a solution.

    Unfortunately,

it seems we all have issues with our hardisk (maybe bad sector), and yes this makes our Mavericks works fine till performing a full check before installing the new OS. So what I did to maintain my data is installing a new hardisk and keep the old one as external hardisk so that I can retrieve my data back.

insted, you guys can use external hardisk to move your data on and format your hardisk then reinstall it again to your Mac.

Wasting 2 days on this is more than enough.

No, the problem is that a file inside the installer is corrupted. It's possible that it could be corrupted because it was written to a bad sector, but it could also have been a thousand other things.

I think a better point is, why in the world would they not create a backup copy of everything they change so that you can restore your computer if the installer fails? Seems like a perfectly logical and simple thing to include in an installer. I have no choice but to drive hours to the nearest Apple Store because I don't have a working Mac to re-download Yosemite.

Apple has failed me by not including a last known good restore point prior to initiating an upgrade installtion. My computer was working perfectly fine before. Now there is absolutely nothing I can do with it on my own.

    Hello everyone,

I was having the same issue, I received the same error message "File system verify..." and when verifying and repairing the HDD via Disk Utility everything was fine.

Then, I run memtest in order to check the RAM. I had replaced the original RAM and one slot was having failures. I took out the bad one and then tried to install Yosemite. It worked!

So, I don't know what kind of checks the installer does, if it only checks the HDD or maybe it checks the RAM too.

    I hope this helps!

Did you put the memory back after you installed it? How did you know which one was bad? How do I run this test? Thx!

No, I did not put the memory back after the installation.

In order to run the test I used an app called memtest. You need to install it an run it via Terminal.

I had the same error when upgrading from Maverick to Yosemite. I got caught in an never ending loop of: restarting my Mac when I got the error; than having the same error come back up on the reinstall attempt; and being forced to restart again. I won't go into all the details but after hours of tech support, a additional partitioned drive, the end result was Yosemite not being installed and me not being able to revert back to Maverick. This is what I did to get Maverick back up and running (part of the answers came from another post).

I went into disk utility and removed all partitions and completely erased my drive.

I then disk checked my drive to ensure there were no errors.

I then rebooted into recovery mode (cmd +R) and it brought up the internet connection icon to download and install disk utility (10 mins).

I then choose reinstall OS X (it installed Mountain Lion since that was the original OS that came with my 2012 MBPr.

Once mountain Lion was installed, I went to the App store and in the "purchases tab" I choose Mavericks and re-downloaded the OS.

I then installed Mavericks with no issues.

I then used Time Machine to get back to my original state prior to my Yosemite upgrade attempt.

I am not sure why Yosemite never worked for me, and Apple Tech support tried their best but they never figured it out either. Perhaps it was permission errors,  corrupted file download, or disk errors.

In the end I am happy to be back up and running again. And I will not attempt to upgrade to Yosemite until I am sure it will work.

    Eric

I successfully restored my system after installing a new drive

i took the extra precaution of not installing over my existing "bad" hard drive because it still does have a copy of all my files

i figured the more backups the better

    what i did

bought a new 1TB 2.5" drive from Amazon - next day delivery

I booted the hosed laptop using command R, and installed the OS on a USB flash drive

then took out the old drive and installed the new

booted using command-R again, used disk utility to reformat the new drive

then installed OS X on it

afterwards rebooted and in the setup steps I had it restore from my time capsule backup

waited 4 hours for the restore ( actually I slept)

then logged in and enteded my apple password a few times and all is well

    Easy Peasy!

im back on mavericks and tonight will try Yosemite again ha!

I have the same issue, I am going to reinstall mavericks, I find a way to download it from the app store.

You have to go to purchases and find mavericks and download it.

Then use diskmaker x to make a boot usb drive from mavericks.

I will keep you informed if this works.

I have created a bootable USB of Mavericks (previously, I made one of Lion). I installed both those OS with success and my computer was back (I had previously done a clean install so my files are backed up (manually) on an external drive to transfer over later).

I updated Mavericks completely, made a backup with Time Machine and re-downloaded the Yosemite Installer. I installed it and the computer restarted, proceeded to install and then "copy failed".

I am now wondering if I can get back into Mavericks...
