Q: bluetooth connection fails iOS 8.0.2 OS X yosemite

Hi, I'm facing connection problems trying to create a bluetooth connection between my iphone (iOS 8.0.2) and MacBook Pro with the new OS X Yosemite.

I'm not able to pair the two devices

All of you are barking up the wrong tree!

Handoff does not require Bluetooth pairing between your Mac and your iPhone.

    Stop trying to pair them.

The Bluetooth just has to be turned on all devices.

I have the same issue too; trying to pair my iPhone 5 with my Mac Pro after updating to OS X Yosemite...

I am also having the same issue trying to pair my iPhone 5s with my late 2013 iMac. Keeps dropping. Hopefully this will be fixed soon as many are frustrated as we waited a long time for this.

Lanny is correct: You are NOT supposed to pair them, Bluetooth just needs to be ON. I am not sure if it is normal to have 2 devices listed, but I have it working between my iPhone and my iPad (worked since day 1* of iOS8 - once I realized I was not supposed to be pairing them).  I do have an issue with my MBP (running BT4.0): I can make/receive calls, but I cannot see applicable apps opened on my iPhone/iPad.

Steps I did to get iPhone/iPad working together:

    - Enable WIFI

    - Join same WIFI

    - Turn On Bluetooth on both devices

    - *restart iPhone (should not be required but it was not working right away so I did it and it has worked ever since)

    With that done:

    - I can see my iPhone as a possible WIFI spot to join (even though personal hotspot is not actually turned on)... selecting it auto-turns it on

    - I open application apps on one device and I can pick them up on the other device by double pressing the home button to show all open apps (scroll to far left to see handoff from other device)

    Note:

    - I did not pair the devices

    - I did not turn on personal hotspot

    Moving forward:

    - trying to figure out why I do not see open apps in the dock on my MBP (mid-2012 LMP version 0x6)

my late 2013 iMac doesn't just not connect to my iphone 5, but i just realized it doesn't connect to my bose bluetooth speaker, which was working fine before the upgrade from mavericks to yosemite.

Ok, so I also have this problem, but I have realized that the problem may be a few things...

I have a early 2009 Macbook pro, with Yosemite. Handoff does not exist in my System Preferences, or even in a spotlight search of the computer. I heard it won't work with the older models, which is disappointing knowing that third party apps can do it.

Also, I have a iPhone 5s with AT&T, my data plan is 3GB a month. In order to have mobile hotspot, the plan must at least 5GB a month.

So please correct me if I'm wrong... but enabling mobile hotspot would allow me to connect my phone to my computer. Once connected I could use Handoff over bluetooth, without using my mobile data.

So I need to pay more for the capability for my Apple phone to connect to my Apple computer?

Lanny, while you might be correct in stating that the two devices need not be "paired" to utilize the new handoff feature, this issue extends beyond handoff into Itunes wireless sync among other features. Before Yosemite my phone (5s) paired, synced and communicated fine with my MBP and now it no longer does so. For what it is worth, both my phone and MBP meet all of the stated upgrade requirements for Yosemite. This is most certainly unintended so hopefully Apple will fix this in short order.

iOS 8.1 does not appear to have fixed the problem. Have just upgraded and tried it   :-(

Just upgraded iOS 8.1. The problem is still there. Not able to connect with bluetooth, not able to use the handoff feature.

I just upgraded too. It works for me. Bluetooth won't connect still but if you have something open on you're mac open IE safari or mail and then double click the home button on you're phone, scroll to the left it should pop up. The bluetooth on my phone is on but not connected to anything and same goes with my mac.

Glad to see it is working for you!  I just upgraded but I cannot test until I get home.

Side Note: You are not supposed to connect them via bluetooth

Handoff wasn't working for me with Yosemite and iOS 8.0.2, but it seems to be working now that I have ungraded to iOS 8.1. Bluetooth still fails to pair, but maybe, as some have indicated, Handoff does not require Bluetooth pairing and connectedness, just that the Bluetooth devices are recognized. The problem with the iMac appearing twice on the iPhone Bluetooth settings and the inability to forget the iMac appear to have been fixed in 8.1.
