Q: Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable.  I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help.  My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution.  Need help.

    UPDATE:

WHen I loaded Yosemite, it prompted me to turn on FileVault.  This kicked off an encryption process that, evidently, can take"some time".  Unfortunately it stalled at 19% and hasn't moved.  After calling Apple Support, I was asked to back up my hard drive.  This is taking forever. Ultimately, I will erase my disk and reload Yosemite.  This may not happen until this evening or tomorrow morning.  I will keep this thread posted with the results.

THank you William and Old Toad for your guidance!

Good luck with that, I really hope that will help to solve it for you, but I have my doubts...

Just because I am experiencing very similar issues with Yosemite and my FileVault has been off the whole time!

    Nevertheless...chin up:)

I too am experiencing some extreme slowness going on since upgrading to Yosemite last night. My iMac handles it finely, my MacBook Pro (2011-2012) has become impossible to use. Mainly when I type things it freezes, and stays like that for up to 10-20 minutes before stuff works again. The app I'm typing in is the one that freezes, but if I try to do something else everything freezes, and stays frozen even longer.

I don't have FileVault turned on, so that's not the issue for me.

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits.

I don't see any obvious culprits. See if you can update the Adobe Switchboard to a compatible version. Same goes for the Flash player.

The iTunes helper app in the User login items is no longer needed.  Remove it from the System/User & Groups/Login Item preference pane.

If the above shows no improvement boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair disk permissions and the disk.  Reboot normally and check for improvements.

If all else fails boot again into the Recovery volume and reinstall the system.

Same problem here. Graphics, particularly, Mission Control, swiping and scrolling become too laggy and slow after few hours of uptime.

Resetting PRAM and SMC does NOT fix it.

A quick reboot fixes this kind of slowness.

And today I received an email from Apple, recommending the upgrade to Yosemite. What a joke. Bahahaha

How do I update the Adobe Switchboard?

I'm not sure I can do much of anything suggested; I doubt I'll be able to get the Flash update to work, having a hard time even booting the computer...

I did just now boot into the Recovery volume to try and reinstall the system. But that freezes to; couldn't select anything to continue.

Well, I will give it one last try and wait a week in a smear hope that Apple will release hotfix. If they won't, then I'll downgrade to Mavericks.

I can boot into the Recovery volume and I do get all the options (restore, reinstall, help, disk utility), but I can't click any of them. Nothing happens. So I can't continue. I can't access the menu at the top, either.

Oh, yes! Something's happening! I got into the Disk Utility..! (Grabbed another mouse, that seemed to somehow do the trick.) I'll be back with an update after a bunch of repairing and reinstalling.
