    3. Resetting the System Management Controller

Every MacBook Pro has an inbuilt hardware function called System Management Controller. Most people never run the reset though! While we won’t get too technical to explain its various functions, we will tell you that running a reset of this controller can sometimes tremendously help in improving the speed of your Mac.

Don’t worry, resetting this controller will not harm your Mac in any way. It won’t even change any of your content or user settings. It just resets the hardware and in most probability, will make your MacBook run faster, run much faster than before.

How to reset your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller?

    • Turn off your MacBook Pro
    • Plug in your MacBook Pro’s power cord into the wall socket
    • Now, hold down the Left Shift + Option + Control + Power Button, simultaneously, for 10 seconds
    • When you do the above, your Mac won’t power on but a reset will be registered
    • Release all keys after 10 seconds and turn on and run your MacBook Pro like you normally do
    • Your MacBook Pro’s slow performance problems are hopefully solved!

Please note that when you press the above mentioned combination of keys, your MacBook Pro should not turn on. If it does, you probably didn’t press one of the keys properly. Do it again until you are able to press down all mentioned keys for 10 seconds, without powering up your MacBook Pro.

    4. PRAM Reset (Updated on 23, March 2014)Just like the SMC reset discussed just above, another reset called the PRAM reset has also quite a few Macbook owners fix performance problems on their MacBook Pro, putting an end to MacBook Pro running slow problems.Again, like the SMC reset, the PRAM reset will not delete your user generated data when you run it. The only thing you might have to restore after carrying out this reset is probably some system preferences like time, date etc., something that will take you just a two minute run, at the most. How to carry out a PRAM reset to fix slow MacBook Pro problems?

    • Shut down your MacBook Pro
    • Press the power button
    • Press Command + Option + P + R in combination, all at the same time, before you see the grey startup screen
    • Press and hold until your MacBook Pro restarts
    • Release the keys when you hear the familiar startup chime sound that your MacBook Pro makes when it starts up
    • Your PRAM reset should be complete

Hi I had the same issue - internet abysmally slow after Yosemite update and after an hour of research inc. opening up keychain access as advised tracked it down to a bluetooth entry for my iphone strangely, I deleted the iPhone entry and turned back on bluetooth (2013 MBA) then internet is running fast again,

Same problem here. App Store slow to open and some internet pages do not open at all

I have a hard wired connection to the router and have tried turning off WiFi

Strangely enough this has only started happening today, everything was fine after the initial upgrade to Yosemite

    Hi,

had the same problem when updating to Yosemite (MacBook Pro: Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013, 2,7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3). I am using a router with 2.4 Ghz and 5 GHz WiFi. Both nets were named the same. I renamed the 5 GHz WiFi and tried  both networks. It turns out that my MacBook is sluggish on 5 GHz and not on 2.4 GHz (Others have reported the opposite). I tried all other tricks proposed in the Internet, but it only improved my WiFi Internet for a short time. Renaming the WiFi networks and using 2.4 GHz fixed my problem. (Of course not fixed before the 5GHz is working, but my Mac is now responsive)

Note. I updated my Wife's MacBook Pro 13 Inch Retina (2014). No problems seen on that laptop. Both frequencies works.

it's not just on WiFi. My 2009 iMac 24" is ethernet into Airport Extreme router. Web speeds are slooooow... Safari 8.0 is part of the problem, for sure. Clearing history then quitting the app helps, still way slow compared to Mavericks 10.9.5

    This is getting OLD.

Since upgrading to Yosemite the experience has been one continual nightmare. Safari doesn't load pages or loads so slowly I give up. App updates of 56 megs taking hours to update. I tried all the possible solutions: clearing caches, trashing db files, deleting and renaming internet connections, etc. Nothing worked at all. The only solution I didn't try was turning off bluetooth. I am on a mac mini and use a bluetooth keyboard. Turned it off and instantly my speeds improved. Downloads that were taking hours suddenly finished and installed in under three minutes.

So now I find myself in the unfortunate situation of not being able to use my computer adequately. Just to access this page I had to turn off bluetooth to access the login page, then turn it back on to log in, then tuirn it off to access this thread, then turn it on to write this  message.

In the meantime, a download of 191 mb indicates it will take 4 hours to complete. I turn bluetooth off and that time drops down to 5 minutes.

Obvious where the problem is. Anybody have a solution?

    Same problem here.

    New iMac upgraded from Mavericks.

Slow Internet via Wifi (Newer Airport Extreme)

    Sluggish system performance in general

    Epson printer no longer works

Dymo label printer just got an updated driver but it was out after the update, too.

Teaches me to download a beta copy... oh, wait a minute.  Hopefully they work to fix the poor performance caused by the Yosemite "upgrade".  Yikes.

iCloud Drive seemed to be the culprit for me.

I got into my router setup (typing your router address on the browser) and changed the channel, i had a "find best channel" option, did it and applied that channel, slow internet problem solved. Hope this helps

I did this as well. The gain was slight, but when downloading a large file I find the speed still drops considerably. If I disable wi fi, the speed picks up again. So it doesn't solve the problem.
