Q: ads pop up in Safari - how to stop

I am having ads pop up on every page in Safari from adnxs.com among others.  The code does not come from the page, but from Safari.  How do I stop them.

Thanks for the help.

Thank you sooooo much!!!!!!! You made my life so much easier!!!

I am always a bit hesitant on downloading these types of things but it actually works. I would also like to thank those who downloaded it and said great things about it, because it encouraged me to download it.

Thank you so much, I followed your advice and downloaded AdwareMedic.  Now the pop up ads on my new MacBook Pro seems to have disappeared.  The program also alerted me to the suspect culprit behind it all - Firefox.

I have just set up the new computer and I always add firefox in case I meet a site that does not work well with Safari.  I noticed Firefox wanted to add other programs when I opened it and as far as I know I refused all of them.  Clearly Firefox still downloaded something.  I have now removed Firefox from my computer and I will never trust it again.

Firefox was not the problem. It sounds like you probably had adware installed that is known to modify the Firefox app. This isn't really a problem with Firefox, but with the adware that you installed. That adware could have been downloaded by any web browser, and it still would have done this when installed.

Be aware that this adware does not install itself. It got on your machine because you downloaded and installed something you shouldn't have, probably by being tricked into thinking you needed it or downloading something from the wrong site. For more information, and to learn how to avoid this in the future, see:

You are of course correct that somehow I must have been tricked into installing the adware. But the only time I saw extra things come up was at the end of the installation of all the usual programs I installed from the web when I downloaded Firefox and Skype.  I suppose in my hurry to finally get the computer up and running I could have mistakenly got one of those downloads from a bad site.  I expect I took the first offering of where to find the last two programs in safari and how clever some sites are at making you think they are the real one.

What makes it most annoying is I am always very careful what I download and whom I trust.  I never open any attachments from someone I don't know and even if I know them I will be careful as mail can and is compromised.  All my software is legitimate and main stream but now most programs need to be downloaded each time they are installed due to updates.  Ah well as they say live and learn, at least it was not a fatal error.

Yeah, Firefox and Skype should not include any kind of adware, but if you downloaded those from the wrong place, that could have been the source of the problem. There are sites that will wrap software like this in an adware installer, so you think you're just downloading the app, but you end up getting something else in addition.

If you have adware, installing an ad blocker will not solve the problem. It may eliminate the symptoms, but unless you like the idea of an ad system still tracking your online activities, it doesn't fix the problem.

But ad blocker will be helping you to stop installing ad wares on mac computer.
If you already applied application to your browser to stop ad wares to enter in your computer than why do we need a ad ware medic for our computer.

No it won't. I'm curious what gives you the idea that it does. Adware certainly can come from bad ads, but more often it comes from many other places instead, such as torrent downloads, downloads from bad aggregation sites (like Download.com or Softonic), video streaming or file sharing sites, etc. The only way for people to avoid installing adware is a change in online behavior, not installing an ad blocker.
