Q: This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.

I just bought a brand new MacBook Air.  I created a brand new Apple ID that is only signed in on that computer.  I am getting the error message, "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled" when I try to update anything (i.e. iPhoto, Garageband, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iTunes, etc.).  Been getting the error for a few days now, starting on the day I purchased the laptop.  Not sure why I'm getting this error with a brand new laptop and brand new Apple ID.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Have you accepted those free apps that came with the purchase of your new Mac into your Apple ID in the Purchases pane of the Mac App Store?

How do I accept the Apps? I am getting asked the same thing to update my apps for Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.

    Thanks.

I received the same message when I went to update iPhoto and Numbers after installing OS10.10. I solved it by placing each app in Trash after checking associated files were backed up. Then proceeded to App Store and followed updates through to Purchases (iPhoto is free). Both apps and including old files work fine.

Strange indeed. I was on V3.5.3 of Numbers and 5.5.3 of Pages and had updated them both numerous times with no issue and suddenly this problem appears. However, I flipped to the Purchased tab and clicked Update for Numbers and it's done it and I now have 3.6 Sadly, Pages was not listed on the Purchased tab even though I last updated it at the same time as Numbers! I sense a call to Apple coming on ...

Thanks for the suggestion though - I'm halfway there.

There were only two apps listed there, neither of which were Pages. I unhid them both all the same. I've restarted my Mac and tried again, still with the same Apple ID / Refund / Cancelled message.

I've never had a refund or anything for iWork and I've used the same Apple ID since about 2005 or something. In the Mac Apps store I see the following which I would have taken to mean that I was due an update (I never bought Keynote):

Well, I've found the "answer" - thought I don't understand it.

Apple have told me, and I've confirmed this by going back to my emails from 2011 (yes, I'm that crazy!) that Apple refunded me the cost of Pages in that year as I'd asked them to. I did this because I'd accidentally bought it from the Mac App Store. I still have Pages '09 from whenever. Oddly, I'm still able to update Numbers to V3.6 even though I bought/installed it and Pages at the same time.

Apple say that all I can do is buy Pages again. Hey ho ...

Hi. The same thing happened to me also with OS X Server. I originally purchased it, used it and then repurposed the Mac Mini for another use. I later tried to install OS X Server on my iMac and had to repurchase it to get it to install, I contacted Apple and they refunded my money after I too dug back through eMails to find my original receipt. OS X Server ran find and I have updated it a number of times and then yesterday a update shows up and got the can't update message. i talked to Apple two times and both time The answer was to repurchase the app again. Not happy, Now I don't have any OS X Server. The older version I bought does not even show up in my purchased apps.

Minor updates are free, major upgrades are paid. What version of Server do you have installed?

What you said is what Apple told me about major upgrades. Apple worked with me trying to move my version of server to an external disk. The copy failed for some reason. I then just deleted server from my iMac, thinking that I would be installing the version that was trying to update from the app store. This is when I found out about the major upgrade policy. So right now I don't have any version of server installed. For now this is fine, I was only using server to run time machine backups for my Mac Mini and MacBook Pro. So for now I went back to having an external drive on each of them for backups. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have the same problem. I recently upgraded to El Capitan and my iPhoto prompts me to get an update on the app store. However, when I logged in my details for the update, a dialog box popped out with a message,"This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled." I tried to look for the purchase tabs, but there is no iPhoto there, and no accept button or anything can be seen.

    Thank you

That's a bit odd because iPhoto is no longer a supported app having been superseded by Photos. I'd check your version of iPhoto against the one the Mac App Store is trying to download - you may find that they are the same.

The latest version of iPhoto is 9.4.2 and was released on the 17th of January 2015. I would have thought that your best bet is to use Photos instead and then stop using iPhoto after you've ensured that Photos is running OK.
