Q: iPhone photo edits lost after import / sync to aperture ?

Two problems I noticed while syncing photos to my  iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1:

First, while importing, Aperture told me it could not recognise several items (Unsupported items) so I had to save them in a separate folder in my mac. Those items are files with the name of the photo plus an "AEE" extension. (say IMG_2340.AEE ) and I assume those files are the edits I have made to my photos.

Then I noticed that synced photos do not have the original edits. So the photo goes to the mac and looses the edits plus when the photo is back to the iphone via iTunes sync all the changes are gone. Some pictures appear duplicate also. (I'm still trying to find the logic of the error )

It looks more like a bug but I just wanted to know if someone else is experiencing this.

  • How could I re-link the AEE files to the original photos and preserve the edits after sync?

Here the content of one of the AEE files I mentioned:

    UPDATE...

The AEE files were ignored by aperture while importing photos edited with the Camera app and / or  Photos app in iOS 8.02.

Now with iOS 8.1 the edits are simply LOST.  I can confirm this issue remains even if you restore your iphone as a "New iPhone". No matter how many edits and time you spend editing your photos all changes and edits will be lost. crop, color, auto enhance, everything lost after syncing.

Also... if you try to "save" your edits sending the images via e-mail you will get attachments with different names such as

    " FullSizeRender.jpg, FullSizeRender1.jpg, FullSizeRender2.jpg " plus there is no way to "revert"

Haven't tried yet with photostream as all photos seem to re-organize themselves in a random order spread all over the "moments and collections" folders

That is a feature of iOS 8, not a bug, unfortunately. Downloading via USB will import the contents of the camera roll. Previously you could save the edited photos to the camera roll and then import them this way, but that is now not possible. So importing using a USB connection will only give you the original photos without edits, see this Apple Support document:

iPhoto and Aperture don't have edits to photos you import from iOS 8 devices

As to the .AEE files, I don't know. Have you used any third-party photo editor ? Have the files been downloaded from email?

    Hi,

    Thanks for answering,

The AEE files were the result of the first import I did with iOS 8.1 to Aperture using Yosemite and the edits were made using only the Camera app or the Photo app in the iPhone. Before that I was using Mavericks and iOS 8.02.  I have tried several imports afterwards and the warning dialog doesn't pop up anymore.

When I imported from Aperture that first time there was a message warning about  "Unsupported files". The on-screen instructions led me to save these files in a folder. I opened the files with textwrangler and realised they were AEE files containing XML stuff.

In the example XML file above you can see a tag with some "slomo"  <string> content and I would asume this is also why synced videos also lose their slo-mo effect.... Hoping this is not one more feature !

The AEE files are named  "IMG_number" corresponding to the images I edited with iOS 8.02 and imported after the upgrade to iOS 8.1 and Yosemite.

    thanks again

    jp

I have learned the hard way that edits and adjustments made in the photo app in my iPhone will be ignored by iphoto and aperture in my mac.

The question is... Will the new Photos app for mac (coming in 2015) support such edits and adjustments?

Using iCloud library is not an option for me to keep my photos or videos. It will simply take too long for the entire library to sync with my devices with my normal internet connection (which is very fast to download stuff but can be really slow to upload a slow motion clip of a few seconds).

what can be the use of promoting the photos app in iOS8 as a powerful app if all edits are gone with a simple sync?

Are there alternative workflows to use the iphone camera app in sync with your mac?

    Hello,

I've managed to restore all my edited photos from backup after a sync with iPhoto. Feel free to ask me if that's your problem.

the photos are there. not the edits you did to them because the import process strip the edits of the pictures.    could you explain?

    Hi jpac,

It's only possible if you have a backup of iPhone / iPad from before the sync with iPhoto for Mac. If you do have, you should open the backup with iPhone Backup Extractor or iExplorer and extract the Media / Photos / Mutations folder. There you will find the edited versions of your photos. You can save or put them back on your iPhone / iPad manually with iExplorer by just dropping it into the same folder by overwriting the other one with no edited versions.

This way I could successfully restore my photo edits. It's also a faster and easier way to save the edited photos, not just the original ones.

ok.. thanks. This sounds possible. But that's what the sync process is supposed to do for you. I hope there will be a fix for the bug soon.

Sure, you're right, this is a complete mess now. It must be fixed. It's ridiculous that I need a special software to restore / save my edited photos. But in the meantime, you can restore your photos you have spent hours of editing on.

    This is absolutely ludicrous!

When I first bought the iPhone 6+ and edited photos taken with the camera, the edits would transfer over to Aperture.

Being quite happy with that, I used the iPhone 6+ to take almost all of my shots on a recent very long trip, instead of my usual high-end cameras. Being quite anal, I spent a significant amount of time during the trip editing the shots to get the look I wanted.  Just got back last night and tried to offload some of the photos into Aperture, and imagine my surprise.  Further, my practice is to delete the photos on the iPhone when I transfer them over.  Now I've lost all those edits since only the originals transferred over!

You guys at Apple, the following is directed at you...

    This is absolutely ludicrous!

    1. Why would one want to edit photos only not to be able to keep them?!

    2. What is with the flip-flopping between different versions of the iOS - one version keeps edits and the next doesn't.  And without warning?!

I have already lost all the edits of the initial batch I transferred over, which I painstakingly took the time to process (during my holiday I might add... what a waste of time!).  Am I now supposed to lose all the edits to my remaining photos... unless I email them 5 at a time to myself???

PLEASE!!! revert back to having edits able to transfer over to Aperture.

And what, pray tell, is the rationale behind not allowing edits to be transferred over now, when a previous version of the iOS allowed it?

    How terribly annoying...

I noticed too that at some point the edits taken on photos were not syncing to the Mac anymore.

Very annoying, especially as one had to learn it the hard way.

My assumption is that this is related to the introduction of iCoud Photo Library.

One of the features there is the promise to keep all edits.

I take that Apple would like to welcome you to iCloud Photo Library.

Of course your iCloud Photo Library stops syncing when iCloud storage is full,

so they will ask you for an upgrade on your iCloud storage plan.

My iPhoto library grew over more than a decade now and it is at 350 GB currently.

This would mean Apple is asking me for 10 bucks a month just for the storage of my family and friends photos.

For me personally, the consequence is that I will consider less the iPhone as a cam and fav my real cam instead, again.

And I clearly see the Cloud storage as a trap now.

Here's a workaround that involves the new Photos app for Mac:

    1. Make any edits you want on your pics to your phone
    2. Open Photos on both your phone and your mac, and wait until all your edits have been synced to your computer. (Provided you have not migrated your Aperture/iPhoto library to your Photos for Mac app, and you have activated the iCloud Photo Library on both your phone and the Photos for Mac app).
    3. Select the photos you want to transfer from the Photos for Mac, then right click -> share -> Add to Aperture. The edited pics will be imported into a new project in Aperture, with all edits and metadata preserved. (Once in Aperture, you won’t be able to revert to the original as it was taken, you would have to revert on Photos for Mac)
    4. You can now delete from your iPhone & Photos from Mac.
