Q: No 2G,3G,4G toggle after IOS 8.1 Update

I got very excited when looking at the list of items included in IOS 8.1 update this evening. One of the things on the list has been greatly missed, the toggle to switch off 3G and run on 2G only. After the update..... options are exactly the same. Cellular Data on or off, Enable 4G on or off. I should say I am on EE 3G in the UK.

Does anyone else have a different result after the update????

SunnyR9 this issue is NOT affecting all users. It is not however carrier dependant as killhippe suggests. Apple changed the options so that instead of just an enable 4G toggle in the cellular/mobile (dependant on your language settings) menu, a new sub menu has been created entitled voice/data that then gives you an enable 2G toggle, enable 3G toggle & an enable 4G toggle REGARDLESS of carrier. This is so that you can limit which signal bands your device searches for (providing the HARDWARE) is capable, so that if, for example, your carrier don't provide you with a 4G service, you can stop your device from searching for a 4G signal & save battery. It also brings back the enable 3G toggle that was lost if you bought a 4G capable device.

To reiterate, this is not affecting all users, some have downloaded the new software without incident, but this is an option that should be available to ALL users of iPhone 5 & above, but for some reason has not been included in every download. Those of you who have the new menu, great, lucky you. Those who don't, do not worry Apple are working on a fix. Those of you who do t know any better (killerhippie) please stop stating that it is a carrier dependant issue when it is not! 4G coverage is carrier dependant, but the ability to enable your device to connect to a 4G network is most certainly not.

    Thanks for the advice Rob!

I have the same issue too. I've tried performing a full reset, loading the IOS 8.1 using the iTunes and restoring my backup didn't not work for me.

Maybe i missed something... I hope apple support gets back to you soon for an official advice.

Had a callback this afternoon from AppleCare UK to say they're starting to get more reports of it, seems like it's definitely an Apple mistake somewhere along the line, so rest assured if you can't get it working, it's not a fault with your device or the way you've installed the update. I'm expecting another update from them late tomorrow night UK time so will keep you all posted.

In the meantime I'm trying to find out through you guys & word of mouth if this is an issue that is affecting all users of specific devices or is just completely at random. I know a lot of people who are having this issue are using an iPhone 5S, but I've not yet had someone say 'oh it worked fine on my 5S'. I am also having the issue on my iPad Air and I am aware that some users are having this issue on the iPhone 6 too. The engineering department at Apple are investigating what's gone wrong though, so I'm sure they'll have an answer soon. If any of you can offer a bit more information concerning devices affected, and if you know of anyone who has had success in getting the full update on a device others have had this issue with, it would be appreciated As it will probably help find the root cause faster.

I am glad my original post has created so much interest! Rob is doing an amazing job chasing Apple to get this fixed, thank you very much. I am using an IPhone 5S on EE 3G in the UK. I also have an ipad mini, but it is Wi-Fi only so it's not really applicable. I am really looking forward to this feature if it ever appears. Do we think this is a sign that Apple do listen to customers feedback and do add or return features we request? Photo Roll, 2G,3G buttons??

Yes Apple do pay attention occasionally, remember the sidebar issue with iTunes 11? Sometimes consumer pressure does work. I for one am glad that finally I can switch the SMS relay on so I don't have to keep switching devices when at home. You'd have thought that would have been a feature that would have come along with the 'continuity' ability to answer phone calls through your iPad? Maybe we were meant to have to wait for Yosemite to be launched to get that but were given it early by mistake? Thanks for your praise though, as much as its a self interest that is motivating me to get Apple to fix this, it's nice to know that others will benefit from my perseverance

I posted on another thread about Apple releasing a 8.1.1 in the next 72 hours and they removed the reply so there will be a software update to fix this issue

I Have the same problem on my iPhone 6 from T-Mobile... I just upgraded to iOS 8.1 yesterday and have been waiting for the toggle 2G 3G switch... I've been reading all of the comments on here, and yes I think it's a problem in the update... I think that it's really weird that some people have this feature but some don't. It's good that apple knows about this problem and thank you for keeping us updated on what applecare says.

Hi Rob, off topic I know but how do I get rid of the messenger icon off my screen... It's from a msg I did not end up sending but I can't seem to remove it. I tried to add a screen shot so you know what I mean but was unable to do so

    Hi Ticka111

Do you mean the badge icon (the little red circle with either a number or exclamation mark in it) that appears over the messages button? If so then it will probably relate to either an unread or failed message. You will need to open up the particular message thread and delete the failed message or reread the last couple of messages you have received. There is a known bug relating to this that was supposedly addressed with 8.1

If this is not what you mean, could you please give me a little more detail (which app, what screens in question this icon appears on etc) and I will happily try and help

    HI Rob,

    thanks for for your reply

the the icon is a grey circle the size of a 10c . It is on the background screen on my iPad Air. A above the grey circle it says "recents" and below it says "Simon" which is who I was going to send the message to. i did not send the msg. If I tap the icon a msg icon appears to the right of the grey circle. If I tap on the msg icon it opens the msg I did not send, the msg recepient i is in redid in red. If I hold on the recipient name it comes up with the remove option. If I tap remove it does remove the recipients name but the grey 10c coin size icon remains on the screen and if I tap on it the recipients name is back.

Ah that's easily fixed, it's actually a new feature that will display all your recent contacts on the app switching screen. Here's a link with instructions on how to remove it: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6604787

    hope that helps

    Hi Rob,

thanks for that... took your advice and it's gone now...  Like others I still have no service on my 3G and after updating to IOS 8.1 no difference but as advised on this post I will await another update from Apple... Must confess the issues have been very disruptive and **** annoying. new Keyboard also seems to have issues typing on this forum and uploading a pic also don't happen for me

No problem, glad I could at least help with that issue.

When you say you still have no 3G, do you mean 3G service or the 3G toggle?

If you mean you have no 3G service and you did prior to the update then check in Settings > Cellular (Mobile) and make sure you have both Mobile Data & Enable 4G switched on. If you're stI'll not receiving a 3G signal after this, then you will need to contact your carrier as this will be a coverage issue. The missing toggle options however are not carrier related.
