Q: Server File Sharing unstable on mac and windows network on Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0

Since I've updated our mac mini server from Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X to Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0  we are having sharing issues with Windows (7 and 8) and OSX Mavericks users, not being able to access files on the mac mini server.

What I've notice is that OSX Serer 3.0 stop working and I have to restart the Mac Mini Server to make things start working again.

This was not happening with Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X.

On the Windows and OSX users what happen is the computers keep trying to connect to the server and are not being able to open or copy files. Again this is intermittent, and I suspect it might be a OSX Server bug.

Any one having the same problem or can give us and advice would be great help.

Thanks.

With 10.9.5 now out, has anyone tried testing it to see if it improves this situation?

It's meant to improve the reliability of SMB when connecting to servers. Here is hoping SMB 3.0 in Yosemite does not introduce a bunch of new problems!

So far, I have had no success upgrading to server 3.2 (seems to be a "common" problem - I'll give them a few days to figure it out)

    - but guess what

The other day I was so ******, that I did write an email addressed  to Apple Management (obviously he won't read it himself..) not expecting much of it , but today I did get an email back from a team member of the [APPLE Server Engineering Team] asking me about the issues I'm experiencing

and to send him some dump files

It's entirely possible that the issue is fixed in 3.2 but without being able to upgrade - who knows ???

We will see what comes out of this in the coming days - MY hopes are up at this point  :-)

    Hello Georg,

See that you can work with the Apple engineering team since they reached out to you. Who is it! Vladi? Do it. Get them what they want.

I had problems too. Many of them and many different ones and have to tell you that finally everything is functioning as it should. 10.9.x was not a good OS. Hoping that Yosemite is better.

Just letting you know that one time it took over 3 hours for the server App upgrade to finish. Make sure you repaired permissions first. Do the upgrade and let it run and wait. Hope it works for you. Might be good to take the server log gather and what not and upload it to your drop box or request a ftp upload to the apple support server.

Hang in there. When it runs it runs great. Slowly getting my trust back with Apple server product but am not looking forward to Yosemite upgrade on my now functioning server

    Ttyl

My smb servers were having stability issues also. I just updated 10.9.5 and now I can't connect at all!!!! So frustrating. The update has completely locked me out of my servers now. Wish I could go back to unreliable instead of completely unavailable. Really Apple? Such a basic concept, extremely disappointed.

In the same predicament...we swapped out an aging Windows Server for the Mini with Server.app as the office was all moving towards using Mac's for their daily work. We just parted ways with a second ACN who could not complete the work requests we laid out, and I'm scraping by trying to keep things functioning for the office. Funny though, this last ACN said that SMB was all fixed in Mavericks and we wouldn't have the issues we had (at least in regards to the file sharing) with the last configuration.

I was finally able to update to 3.2.1 ( You need to make sure you accept the new license agreement from the app store - that's what prevented me from upgrading - The license agreement pop up window did NOT show up when I tried  to upgrading the server software !  - you need to upgrade something else first ( garage band  or so)

Unfortunately 3.2.1 didn't not solve our issue -(-:

I'll send the latest dump file to Vladi - we'll see .... ( in his latest email to me he mentioned, that they have not been able to recreate the file access issue (dropped Connection) ......)

I'm not sure what to do next ....Somebody mentioned that the Mavricks server software 3 is a lot more sensitive to network address "issues" = the next thing to would be run the server on a minimal setup to see if that will make a difference ( Server & 1 Client directly connected)

So with a minimum setup (server & 1 Windows computer connected , the issue doesn't seem to happen)

Somebody mentioned a long time ago that's server 3 is a lot more sensitive to traffic issues  --- guess he was right

I mentioned this to Vladi and his respond was to try Yosemite Beta & Server 4 Beta as this "issue" should have be fixed with the upcoming release ???

Getting Yosemite loaded was no issue - but now I hit a wall as I can not figure out how to get server 4 (if it actually has been seeded yet )

    - so far no respond from Vladi or the Yosemite Beta team about how to load Server 4 ?

    - For the time being I keep my finger crossed that something good will come out of this

    Hello!

Just to let everybody know - I am running a testing server for Yosemite and since the GM an the last preview release the bugs seams to be gone.

I've been running the latest Yosemite & Server 3.5  seed and it has solved our problems with dropped SAMBA connections :-)

We are running a very basic server setup (pretty much- file sharing only ) and that has been performing flawless since upgrading - I'm super happy with it !

Do you mean Server 4.0? I don't see any reference to 3.5 in any of the seed accounts.

Correct - It's server 4 (and Apple always called it that ) - It just came up as version 3.5...in the latest seed

Now that I installed the first release this morning it came up as Version 4

    JorgeUSA,

    - have you tried to connect any Windows 7 clients to the Yosemite & Server 4 ?  Does filesharing work in a mixed osx/windows7 environment??

We also run a small office with a mixed osx and windows machines. Mavericks and Windows 7 clients. We only need the server as a fileserver and it would be great with a new mac mini server and thunderbolt pegasus raid. Since all the problems with Mavericks I have been waiting to upgrade from our old Mac Mini Snowleopard Server for over a year now....  (it have been running perfect 24/7 with osx/windows7 for several years now though!, but are getting old) ...

Is the solution here now? Shall I say hurray and go to the applestore?
