Q: Unable to use SD-Card-Drive after updating to OSX Mavericks

Hey Folk

After Updating to the new version of apples OS (OSX Mavericks) i am unable to use my SD-Card-Drive.
I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) with a build-in Card Reader. It cannot read any cards since the update.
I used SD, SDHC, Micro-SD with adapter and so on . Various Versions from different Manufactors, but nothing works out?
Any Ideas?

Same problem with Mavericks reading SD card, but this worked for me.

IT DOES SEEM TO BE A CONTACT PROBLEM. There is such a small degree of effective contact. Put it in all the way & it won't read, 1mm short of all the way won't work. Half a mm & it works fine.

thanks . I'm in talks with Apple customer care here in India. They have been quite helpful so far by atleast acknowledging that this is quite a unique problem and they will get back to me in 2-3 days. So far so good.

Will keep you updated regarding the same

    Hi Hemang77,

Just try putting the SD card in short of 1mm, give your Mac time to consider this eventful task & the disc should show up eventually.

FWIW, I have a 2012 MBP and a 2012 Mini, and I haven't had any problems using SD cards in any version of Mavericks.

In fact, I've made an SD card as my Mavericks installer disk.

If it was a bug in the OS, then all 2012 MBPs would be affected. So the cause might be elsewhere. Which hopefully means a fix can be made without waiting for an OS update.

    iMac mid 2009

    Mavericks 10.9.4

Unable to read 4 Gb card using external card reader. Reader has worked in previous OS's.

I've tried some of the options offered in this and other similar threads but no luck.

Problem only apparent after installing Mavericks 3 months ago.

The iMac was able to read the card in my camera with my camera connected (Canon PowerShot S5IS, May 2008).

Unfortunately the Canon has developed a fault and won't operate hence the need to access the content on the card using a card reader.

    Hoping for some help soon.

For those who's tried the solutions mentioned before.

I have experienced this problem before (as well as many of the customers of the APR where I worked before).

Here's a silly, but simple solution for those who's tried resetting SMC (or worth trying before that).

The SD card will have a lock slider (similar to good old floppies). If it's on unlock/lock, the card won't read.

If you put the slider in between, about a third of the way from unlocked to locked (NB! Not in the middle), the card reader will recognize the card.

It a silly fix, but it has worked for me several times.

I was having the same issue with my Macbook Air, early 2014. After trying all the suggestions in this thread to no avail, I started trying other SD cards.

I finally realized the cards that didn't work appear to be slightly thinner than the cards that do work. My electronic caliper has a dead battery. As soon as I can replace it, I'll post actual size differences.

Unfortunately, most of my cards that don't work are higher capacity class 10 cards. All my old class 4 and 6 work just fine... smh.

Both cards are by Sony and I've used both cards in an HP Windows 8.1 PC many times with no problems reading them.

Hi. I'm having the same problem here since I updated to Mavericks, I've moved on to Yosemite now. Still, my card reader doesn't work at all. Anybody knows if Apple takes this as a deffective issue in general? Or any other solution available? Thanks in advance.

After updating to El Capitan my San Disk and Kingston micro card were not readable. I disconnected all other usb devices, plugged in my microdisk and restarted my mac. The micro disk was then readable.
