Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Im so frustrated with this now, again Im burning through my monthly data and Im not even a week into my billing cycle.

Yesterday I did a full reset and fresh install of iOS 8.1 (after previously updating each version) and that has had zero effect other than taking a load more of my time up!

    Ive submitted feedback via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Ive had an iPhone right back from when they first came out (currently on an iPhone 5), but this is now driving me to distraction and Im thinking about alternatives. Terrible.

For me its not a 5ghz issue as I only have a 2.4ghz router. Unless I am sat right next to the access point or router it either doesnt connect if Im not connected (continuously asks me to re-enter password or says cannot connect) or if its already connected and I move to another room it simply stops passing traffic. My wifes iPhone 5 (the same as mine and bought at the same time) is still on iOS7 and is having no issues, and the iPad we have is still fine also (again still on iOS7) so its nothing  has changed from the router end, the only variable is iOS8.

They should just let those of us with issues revert back to IOS7, that was stable and WiFi friendly.

Same issue here. Apple had reached Wifi stabilty with IOS7. My frustrations started with upgrade to IOS8. Now with upgrade to IOS8.1 it is still same and unresolved. Maybe I should downgrade to IOS7. I'm also thinking of getting some other phone now.

I'm glad that you are not having issues - but hundreds of us are. I do have the latest version of firmware on my very popular Linksys WRT1900AC, and I continue to have wireless issues with all latest Apple os products: iOS 8.1 and Mac OS 10.10. Mac OS 10.9 and iOS 7.X work perfectly with my wireless router - no issues at all. Once the devices have been upgraded, wireless becomes completely unusable. This also happens to me on the access points *inside the apple store*. And yes, I have reset my network settings at Apple's suggestion repeatedly. This does not help situation. I have submitted multiple bug reports to Apple on these issues, and I am far from alone regarding these issues.

I was not aware that you could go back to iOS seven if I thought you could I would do that straightaway all the good stuff in iOS 8 I'm not worth the hassle that comes with no Wi-Fi

Yes, I have submitted bug reports. Has anyone contacted me regarding them? No.

Not even an automated response. I have an appointment this weekend with a Genius. I better walk out with a working iphone 6 that's on 8.0. That was better than this anyway.  It doesn't solve the fact that my iPad is now stuck on 8.1 and exhibiting these probs. The frustrating part is that some people aren't seeing this problem at all. Some were, but feel it is fixed. And some are still screwed.

I rang Apple this afternoon here in the UK, spoke to a very helpful lady who told me she was a senior advisor there, she confirmed that as far as she was aware, Apple are aware that 8.1 didn't fix the wifi issues and that they are still working on it, she also said she wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't another release out soon.

She also confirmed my suspicions when I asked her, that they aren't allowed to post on these forums but they do monitor them.

So, looks like we just have to wait longer for a fix, at least I know once again they are looking at and know about it, it so I feel a little better for knowing this at least, thought I'd share the results of my phone calls here so you guys also know, just in case you are like me, concerned that nothing was being done to fix it all, or that they weren't even aware its still broken.

Good information. Based on this, it might be best to stay on whatever release of 7 or 8 you're on now if it's stable and working. At least until Apple sorts this out and confidence returns that they've addressed this properly.

So frustrating still after 8.1 update. My iPad air and the wife's ipad 3 are so slow when connected to wifi On ios 8.1.  Can't stream using services like Netflix as it constantly freezes and the iPads just drop connection for no reason multiple times in minutes.. My sons iPad 3 still has io7 due to no space to upgrade and works perfectly. No lost connection streaming Netflix at all and faster Internet when browsing. Csnt believe thsee problems are lasting so long.

Not to mention screen rotation not working and the Internet freezing after a search so you can't click on results.

I have connected both iPads to the computer and done a full restore and starting both iPads setup as new to no avail. Also rebooted my router and reset network settings many many times.

    Yours, really disgruntled Apple lover.

Thank you, I installed it. The apple care guy has literally given me no guidance other than to sync with iTunes to obtain the logs. I googled a bit without a decent answer but where do you go to find the logs on a windows pc?

It appears that 8.1 solved the iPad Air 5Ghz net connectivity issue; solid for two days +. I'm back to all original setup options on the iPad and my router prior to the iOS 8 "upgrade" fiasco. Internet download and up to the service provider are back to where they were before, as well. I don't see one reason why the new iOS is BETTER for me in any way over iOS 7.

Will not update iOS again for a long while; and if I have to, I'll let others test drive it before I get in (fool me once, fool me twice ....).

    That's over and out ...

early days yet, but I've had ios8.1 installed for about an hour in which time my iPad needed to be rebooted.  This would have resulted in me needing to also reboot the wifi router to get back in but this time not. So I am about 50% confident it's worked to fit some of the wifi issues.  I am also noticing some of the curious glitchy screen freezing that has been happening in some apps, particularly safari, appears to have stopped.  So I can confirm the update does appear to work for iPad mini. But I will see, a couple of apps failed immediately after the last update and I haven't yet done a thorough check off all my apps.

I've got two Retina iPad Minis and both worked perfectly under IOS 7. After installing IOS 8.0 then 8.01 then 8.02, both experienced intermittent WIFI dropout, connection slowdowns and higher than normal battery drain. After installing IOS 8.1 both seem to be functioning normally ... at least for the past 3 days ... with no apparent WIFI dropout, more consistent connections to our AEB router, and better battery life. Ergo, while IOS 8.1 seems to have solved the problems I was having, there appear to be as yet unresolved bugs with IOS 8 in general. It strikes me that quality control for IOS 8 has been sub-par ... Apple's been trying to juggle too many balls and has dropped more than a few. As always, YMMV.

8.1 doesn't fix my WiFi problems.

I have multiple iPads, connecting to an Airport Extreme base station, which is connected to FIOS Quantum (150 mbs per second up and down).  When these iPads had 7.x on them, the WiFi performance was BLAZING fast.  When I upgraded them to 8.01, I could no longer stream video -- YouTube videos became choppy and unwatchable.  After upgrading to 8.1, there was no obvious improvement.

Today I bought a brand new iPad Air 2.  It had 8.1 preinstalled.  Took it out of the box, connected it to the Airport Extreme, and tried streaming video -- it's basically unwatchable.  This is a factory fresh iPad Air 2 with nothing installed on it, connecting to Apple's own base station.  A multi-year old iPad, running iOS 7, sitting next to it, streams video with no hiccups at all.

Come on Apple.  This is getting ridiculous...  You have a problem.
