Q: Notification Center settings forgotten

Hi all,

In OS X 10.9 I had removed several applications from Notification Center, because, quite frankly, why should I be bugged with a banner that says someone has posted someone on Facebook (just to give one example). Most of the time, it's annoying.

Migrated to OS X 10.10 this morning to find that my previous settings had not been recovered. Yes, the annoying Facebook notification banners were back again. So I went to the System Preferences, Notification Center and set the settings back to how they were: for several applications, I do not want to be bothered with notification banners.

This seemed to work fine, until I rebooted my computer. All the notifications that I had switched off, were back. Tried it several times, and they just keep on coming back.

Looks like a bug to me, but perhaps there is some file hidden away somewhere that I need to delete for this to

Let's hope that means that Apple will come with a quick fix as well. And that they test their fix properly before they release it, because this problem could and should have been prevented by thorough testing.

After some more googling I see it already being mentioned in one of the DP's. How the **** did this get through testing? Expect these forums to flood the next time people restart their Macs (for example next workday morning).

I am seeing an increasing number of threads and posts about this on these forums and on MacRumors forum. Amazed how such an obvious bug got passed 4 months of testing, including public beta's with over a million people.

Perhaps because many people actually like their work getting interrupted all of the time with notifications and never bothered to remove some applications from the Notification Center? ;-)

In any case, this is getting a lot of attention, so let's hope that Apple will pay the necessary attention to this obvious bug and solve it with the first new patch.

Same Problem on My MacBook Pro Early 2011 Yosemite.

But, On my iMac, 2007, with a Clean Install of Yosemite, and without any application, there isn't the problem, all is OK

I've just posted this feedback to Apple:

"My Notifications Center has 2 problems:

    1) Any change I make in the Preference Pane is lost after restarting my Mac.

    2) In the Notifications Center Preference Pane, all the applications that were out of Notifications Center in Mavericks are not displayed anymore in Yosemite. So it is impossible to change any of their notifications settings."

I have this issue on my iMac (both accounts) but not on my MacBookPro (both accounts) but I have as yet been unable to find what could cause the different effect in Notifications. However, I have tried setting up a new blank account on my iMac and hey presto, it works perfectly, the issue has gone. So I am now more inclined to view this problem as user-specific...

    Anyone else tried trouble-shooting this?

Add me on the same boat. My iMac from 2013 has the same problem with notifications - Settings are reset after restart. Apps that support notifications also disappear after restart, until I start these apps again, then they are added back on. For me, the Finder window also sometimes resizes to default setting, totally sporadically it seems. I have to relaunch Finder by holding down option-button to go back to my settings. Hope the next update removes these bugs, because Yosemite has otherwise been fantastic...

Same problem. Definitely a bug. I've reported it. I upgraded two MacBook Airs and it only happens on one, the older (Mid-2011). Looks like a fairly rare bug, common bugs have many 1000s of views. But it's a really annoying one! Unwanted notifications are really intrusive and there are so many settings to have to keep re-setting each restart.

I guess for a workaround I can set everything to do not disturb, but there are a few notifications like calendar alerts I need to keep. Aaargh!

Its also very possible that the bug was not present in the betas.

Here are the instructions I got from AppleCare from an Apple Engineer. I'm not sure if the fix was specifically for my machine or if it'll work for someone else. Follow at your own risk.

    1. Open the Library folder in your Home folder.

    2. In the Library folder, open the Application Support folder.

    3. Locate the folder named NotificationCenter. Drag this folder to the desktop.

    4. Next, open the Terminal application.

Copy and paste each line of these commands into the Terminal window, in order. Press return after each line:

    cd `getconf DARWIN_USER_DIR`

    rm -rf com.apple.notificationcenter

    killall usernoted; killall NotificationCenter

    5. Close the Terminal app.

    6. Restart your computer.

The notification preference changes won't stick until you restart a 2nd time after this.
