Q: Bluetooth problem with OSX Yosemite: Magic Mouse and Keyboard

Hello everyone,

I've a problem on my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 13" (late 2013).

I've always used it plugged with an external monitor (I love double screen), magic mouse and bluetooth keyboard. On Mavericks everything was perfect with this setup.

Yesterday I installed OSX Yosemite and I've found a boring problem: my Magic Mouse and my Bluetooth Keyboard have a 0.5 second of latency, lag. This happen when the Macbook is not plugged with battery charger. When he is on charge, the problem don't exist.

I noticed this bug also on the public beta of this summer and submit the feedback.

I hoped that they fixed this before release but the bug is still here.

How can i solve this boring problem?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

That might be how it is manifesting for you, but I cannot confirm that.  I do not have FileVault active and I barely ever remove the MBP from the mains.

I turned off "Allow Bluetooth devices to Wake this computer" as I wondered if the MBP was continually polling the Bluetooth port.  Now I notice that when they connect post warm up that the wifi connection gets switched off and I have to manually connect to wifi.

The issue seems more like wifi or usb conflicting with Bluetooth or some power trimming exercise that is stretching the ability of Bluetooth to perform properly.

I would still be interested in knowing why my MBP is wanting to pair with itself.

Just a thought.  Bluetooth operates in the 2.4GHz spectrum.  How many people with issues are using 2.4GHz on their wifi router?

I'm having the same issue. My bluetooth keyboard/magic mouse keep disconnecting and reconnecting. I just replaced the batteries not that long ago (both are still above ~80% battery). This is REALLLLYYYYYY annoying.

Yes I had that same problem and was is very frustrating indeed.  My solution was to use an download app named "Disk Doctor".  Ran Disk Doctor and clean out old files and once done it has work much, much better.  Not perfect but for 3+ hours it has not disconnected on me.  And no lag issues.  It does costs $2.99.  Well worth it in my opinion.

    Hopes that helps...

Hi, I have the same problem. Ever since I have upgraded OS X Mavericks to Yosemite my Magic Mouse and Keyboard are not working properly. Even worst is that Apple has made it almost impossible for me to downgrade to OS X Mavericks since all Mac files that I have opened in new Apple Software versions are upgraded in such a way that they do not open in older versions, i.e. on OS X Mavericks, anymore. So both of my options come with a frustration: 1) I downgrade but cannot open some of my files; or 2) I keep OS X Yosemite but my Magic Mouse and Keyboard does not function. I have never been so frustrated about Apple. How on earth is this possible? I am an Industrial Designer myself and have to admit here that I am seriously concerned about Apple... I hope that something will be done about this. You cannot paralyze (the controls of the computer are simply not working) your customer by these type of mistakes!

In reply, I am not using 2.4GHz, I have neighbors that are, but I have a 450Mbit connection to my 5th gen Airport Extreme that is down one floor and maybe 10 feet, using the 5GHz network, on channel 161 at the top of the spectrum I could get it

So far, fsck /fy in single user mode, bluetooth on/off from terminal, zap PRAM, no luck, still delays, occasional mouse freezing, its better but I'm expecting zero delay like with 10.9

Have you tried to turn WiFi off completely? Try this and see if the mouse stutters or delays

I had the same problems and discovered the following:

    1) After not using the magic mouse for a few seconds it needs a short moment (few ms) to reconnect. But only in battery mode. Maybe some new battery life saving trickery? Not a real solution, but at least no pain while using power adapter.

    2) Disconnecting issues when connected to 2.4 GHz WIFI. Switched to 5 GHz WIFI and no disconnecting issues so far.

So my solution until Apple will fix this problem is using a WIFI on 5 GHz and power supply pluged in.

iv got the same problem as you Mark, both keyboard and mouse are un-useable over bluetooth since installing Yosemite was working fine under Mavericks...

and since you mentioned it my wifi is not good either thought that was just my ISP but sounds like its related to this aswell

will try to reset PRAM see if that is any good for me...

Update - Last night it tried to tell me my keyboard battery was low through the notification system, but the bluetooth pulldown menu still says fully charged. This is on a MacBook air. I'm gonna replace the batteries and see what happens.

    Workaround

    1. Click bluetooth on menubar, select your device and connect.
    2. Quickly press the wifi menu on menubar acting like you are searching/looking for available wifi connection.
    3. The bluetooth device will connect
    4. I have 2 magicmouse. 1 in office, 1 in home. Found this trick while having trouble with them everyday.

Same problem on Yosemite between my mid-2007 iMac (Core 2 Duo) and my Magic Mouse: the Mac sees the mouse over Bluetooth, but can't seem to connect. Out of pure misery, I connected an old USB mouse tucked away in a drawer since ancient times :-(
