Oct 22, 2014 10:35 PM in response to holleyfromglasgowby jimoase,I will take a shot at this. My old MacBook Pro did something like that and I solved it with thin piece of paper or plastic. There is some debris in the crack around the track pad. Slide something in the crack around the track pad.
Hope this helps
Jim

Feb 2, 2016 12:51 PM in response to Peepersabqby OttoRapp,HERE"S MY SOLUTION
I had the same problem and read amongst these posts that someone said that when they put it on their lap the track pad worked. After trying the smc reset without it resolving the problem, I lifted up the computer off of the table and the track pad worked perfectly. After a few more tests I realized it was something about the electrical flow or something through my body and when I would touch the laptop with my left hand and use the trackpad with my right hand it would work perfectly. So it was a grounding thing or such (or something I was wearing or...) but regardless I now know what to do when I want the tracking to work well again. Thanks to all who contributed to this post.

My experience with my last two MacBooks is that stuff gets into the crack around the touch pad. My solutionis is to use a thin piece of good quality paper to insert in the crack and slide around the touchpad. When you encounter a crum the paper will hangup. Backoff and try from the other direction. After a few efforts the obstruction will be removed. I have also used a vacuum but the paper works the best.
Hope this helps you as much as it has helped me over the years.
