Thank you, but Apple is not helping. This is extortion, they release a free OS and make changes to their server that many computers can't operate. Too good Apple don't build cars, we were all dead on the streets. The problems are accumulating, Face Time don't work, Message don't work, Time Machine doesn't recover backups, third parties sofware are crashing (Adobe CS5, Microsoft Office). This is ridiculous.

    Ommelo,

Extortion? I wasn't asked by the Apple operator to pay for support. It was completely free. When the operator answered the call (after 5 minutes), I believe she was asking for an Apple Care number, I just ignored her and told her I was having problems registering my FaceTime and said the error message told me to call support. Then she immediately asked for my name, email and the number in the error message. The call was over in 3 minutes. I didn't have to pay for anything.

I called the US support number using Skype. (I'm from Asia).

You are actually right about it. But I have to say that they did asked me to pay for this help when I called them two days ago. It was either a mistake or they had a change of heart. I will delete my previous comments. By the way, I'm not the only one that has been requested to pay for this same problem before. Today they did help me for free on this matter.

They keep asking me to pay $29 for a onetime AppleCare incident. For FaceTime?!? I don't even use the **** thing but a family member would like us to. So from here it IS like extortion. Using my Apple ID to log into FaceTime isn't working, there's a button to contact support, that page shows the same error code and says call AppleCare at the number below. There is no number listed below. i look number up on my own but they want $29.

I find a support page at the Apple site. I try to initiate chat. It asks for $29.

What number are people calling to fix this FaceTime problem that was free?!?

It was a US number but listed under a different country.

What I did was before they could say anything, I started telling them the problem. Told them that a number popped up when i tried using facetime and to call apple to fix.

The numbers I called all we're to an automated system eventually asking for money with no human involved.

Ya know, I've cooled off a bit from a few days ago when I first ran into this problem. At this point....meh.

    Thanks anyway!

I actually was able to get ahold of Apple for free.  I can't say just yet that the problem is resolved, but it seems promising!  I was frustrated after reading this entire discussion board that no one was able to get this resolved without paying or phone support.  I went through Apple online chat.  There are two options once you enter your device serial number to either pay for support ($29) or to request an exception to the fee . There are only 2 reasons for an exception, both having to do with a recent purchase of software.  I selected one of those options, even though I did not recently purchase software.  I did, recently, upgrade to Yosemite though - I felt this was sufficient.

After getting through to a tech via chat (within 5 minutes), he explained that this is an Apple issue that can be resolved AT NO CHARGE via the "phone support teams."  I provided my time zone and telephone number and they have a tech calling me at a scheduled time today!

Ill revisit this discussion board once resolved!

    Hope this helps.

The driver is the iCloud control panel and the administrator of the computer

    - Try matchig the apple id with the same name as the person signed in at the control panel in sys pref. You will see FaceTime begin to work.
