Q: wifi keeps dropping since Yosemite upgrade

Since upgrading to Yosemite, my previously-stable (with Mavericks) wifi connection keeps dropping. I have to click the wifi icon and re-select my network every minute or two. I have turned off bluetooth and uninstalled/reinstalled wifi and my networks. I have rebooted multiple times. No luck so far. It appears that others are having similar problems. Any solutions at this point?

I found this and it seems to be working perfectly for me so far. I was dropping every minute or two, and now I have had constant connection for an hour. Not much time, but such a huge difference

I'm having the same problems on my 17" Macbook Pro. Every few minutes the wifi drops. I have tried all the previously mentioned remidies with no positive results. I have to turn wifi off and on again to resume my connection.

As an update, I'm on the phone with Apple care support and they said they have recognized this as a problem and that "engineers are working on it" but no fix yet.

I've tried resetting SMC/PRAM without help. Wifi keeps dropping every 1-2 minutes.

Also, if you search in Google "Yosemite wifi reddit fix" someone has put together a pretty exhaustive list of most of the remedies I've seen mentioned in this forum.

I have continued to suffer from this the last few days.

I finally called in Applecare. And got a guy on the phone named Joe.

He had me try 2 things.

Put the wifi settings for ipv6 into link local only (this seems to have improved my issue)

Add public DNS servers - google for example. 8.8.8.8 ( I don't think this has to do with anything, as when the connection drops, pings don't work to anything, this seems unrelated)

I have rebooted and since have not seen it drop yet. Its been about 45 minutes. Prior to this I never went longer then 3 or 4 minutes and it would drop. So things look improved for now. I will update again if anything changes.

    Hi all,

I think I have solved the problem.

Let me sketch what I did:

go to System Preferences >> Sharing >>  deactivate/unmark everything,

I use to share internet with other computer via wireless, where my computer is like a modem, maybe there was a conflict between these two kind of "wireless".

Nope, didnt stay connected for the long term. It seems a bit better, but its still not working the way it should.

I may call back applecare tomorrow, and continue the case.

Hi kezgez the advisor told me to disconnect the main cable from the back of my iMac for ten seconds, then turn on and at the same time you turn it on press and hold command, option,p and r,keep holding until you hear the load up sound, then i went and set up in the network preferences,in the location we put say test as a new account and went from there, but i must say i am still having some trouble but not as bad so i will give it a day or two and then get back in touch if i have to hope this helps cheers Daz

I update to Yosemite two days ago and have had intermittent WiFi connection.  If I use an Ethernet cable I have great access.  Not ideal when our school requires teachers to mark an electronic role and I can't gain access to WiFi not to mention all our teaching content is stored on the school's intranet.  I have also found that my late 2011 mac book pro does not have sufficient ram to run Yosemite.  I often get the spinning wheel of death just trying to open an application.  Apple products have not been of the high caliber standard they were when Steve Jobs was alive.

EUREKA! IT WORKS! 3 hrs without a dropped wifi. Speeds are good.

Ok, I've been trolling this forum for 3 days trying to figure this out. I have a Mac Mini 2012, and ever since the upgrade to Yosemite from Mavericks, my Wifi would drop all signal every 1-3 minutes, and immediately reconnect when I selected my wifi network again. I couldn't stop bluetooth because it's the only way I can have a keyboard/mouse with my mini, so that possible solution (turning off bluetooth) was off the table.

Things I tried to fix this (you can read through the thread to see specifics on each of these steps) Of course rebooted the computer after nearly every one of these steps:

    1. Reset SMC/PRAM. Still didn't work

    2. Deleted system config folder. Still didn't work.

    3. Reordered the wifi network to have wifi both above and below bluetooth (based on 2 different posts which recommended different things, ultimately left it above). Still didn't work.

    4. Deleted all the wifi options, then joined my wifi network, re-entering the password. Still didn't work.

    5. System Preferences -> sharing. Stopped all sharing. Still didn't work.

    6. Utilities -> Keychain Access -> First Aid repair. Still didn't work.

    7. Utilities -> Keychain Access -> Double-clicked my wifi network under system and for access control made it accept from all applications. Still didn't work.

    ** Now the magic step.

    8. When I was on the phone with Apple care, they had suggested power-cycling my router (unplug it for a few minutes, plug it back in). I argued against it as my iPhone's wifi was fine, my Macbook Air was fine, and all of the other networked devices in my home were connecting to the internet fine. If the problem was so clearly with this one computer from upgrading to Yosemite, what was the point of power-cycling the router. Well there I was in my TV room watching TV, and the router was just a few feet away, so I power-cycled it. 2 hrs later I go upstairs and I'm surprised that the wifi is showing full bars on my monitor for my mac mini, and it's not losing connection. Now 3 hrs later, it hasn't dropped.

So I don't know which one of these steps was the magic step, but somehow the power-cycling of the router enabled some reset of the connection. So try it.

THINGS I DIDN'T DO, BUT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE (mainly because I'm not technologically that savvy and I didn't want to screw anything up): Mess with kernels, run scripts, use random apps created by other people from the interwebs (I'm paranoid about hackers/viruses), delete .plists (worried I'd cause irreparable harm somehow).

At some point I *might* try to roll some of the changes back (re-enable sharing, re-limit the access to the wifinetwork through keychain) to try see if progress reverses and if I can isolate the issue, but for now I'm leaving everything as is and enjoying getting my computer back.

This seems to have worked for me too! NB: Apple care say they have no knowledge of a Wi-Fi issue caused by Yosemite and the two representatives that I spoke to said that this was the first call they had received about it. They did however suggest removing the SystemConfiguration folder which so far has solved the problem.

My issue is across different wifi networks so I have determined it is not the wifi router to blame in my case. I suspect that there is a more substantive problem than a domestic wifi router reboot. I also am told by Apple that I am the only person that reported the problem he was aware of.  I think that there is something here, but not everyone experiencing it

    Hello,

I am facing the same issue with Wifi dropping every 5 minutes. Every time I need to reconnect to my router and it´s getting unacceptable.

I used to use Mavericks and this issue had never ever occured, so It came up immediately after the upgrade which is not related to hardware failure.

I don´t think we should keep looking for home made workarounds, this should be fixed by Apple ASAP since I see lots of users with same issue.

Step One, there needs to be an official acknowledgement that there is a problem or people will continue to try what ever in desperation. That would be so helpful then we can relax and wait for the fix.
