Oct 23, 2014 12:06 PM in response to Nielby mariez,My reason why I ask because that disk utility window is as far as I can go into my Mbook. The real issue at hand or problem; is I'm stuck at a a grey screen. may I add that this MBook came from the UK- not sure if there's a difference in old Mbooks between here or there.
TO be honest I don't know what I'm doing or what I Should do about this. Also I'm obviously trying to somehow backup my MBook from the disk utilities menu At the last minute - though too late before I try to do something worse! Oh and to top off not having ever backed up this MBook entirely; and if you should wonder if I have Any of the original install disks? Of course not!
So can someone Please guide me (in detail would much be appreciated) to the right direction ???
an added note: I literally just repairEd disk permissions successfully,
now what do I do?????
I've tried to reinstall OS X Lion but no success there either....

Oct 24, 2014 8:47 AM in response to mariezby Niel,Open the Disk Utility, click on the partition, and then either press the Image button at the top of the window or select the Restore tab. Choose the external drive as the destination.

Oct 25, 2014 7:13 AM in response to mariezby goldfinger-21,Similar, issue, I have had the macbook stop and restart a few times in the last week. Last night, it just stopped, tried to turnon , several bleeps and off, restart got to sign in twice, and restarted itself. Now it just gives progress bar and stops 1/3 of the way up, Disc repair says HD is caput, and cant be repaired, so backup, but there is no way I can do a backup , as it says my discs are locked, How? I backed up three weeks ago, but i have around 15000 picutres not done, and cant afford to lose them.
