Q: accessibility zoom in iOS 8 problems

Hello all!

i am visually impaired and i have ben using iOS and mac devices for many years

Especially in iOS, zoom feature is so handy that helped me so much with my daily tasks!

Everything was working perfectly until iOS 8

I know iOS 8 brought many features for people with disabilities and made improvements for people with vision loss

I'm experiencing 2 issues

1. When zooming in if you tap once there is a new black dialogue window with different features that is quite annoying and you have to tap somewhere else so as to disappear (this can't be disabled from settings,) and i am not talking about the controller

2. Zooming in now isn't that accurate and smooth...i have turned on "Zoom on focus" but still zooming in with the three finger  gesture isn't that smooth

has anyone had any similar experiences?i hope they fix this since this is on of the main reasons why i seriously love apple. Because it had all people with disabilities in mind and added features when none else  even cared!

thank you all!

Maybe I have found a solution to the frustrating problem with the Zoom Window coming up when you actually want the Full screen on the time.

I have also experienced that the issue wit window zoom comes when there is a keyboard.

In fact there is a setting under Zoom in settings where you can choose to follow focus - and if you enable that there comes a possibility to select "zoom keyboard" underneath.  If you enable  this it seems as if the Zoom Window problem disappears.

I am from Denmark so my english is not perfect - but I hope understandable.

    I feel the same.

Please Apple, implement a "lock in fullscreen zoom" mode, I want the old always fullscreen mode!

I Have the same issues, told apple feedback. I also depend on smooth zoom....

I found problems with 3-finger zoom:

    1. Zoom keeps going back to windowed mode even though it is set for full screen mode.

    2. zoom is no longer smooth. Tends to lag a bit and is jumpy in movement. Whereas in ios6 zooming began at the moment of 3 fingers tapping or starting to swipe, and increasing in a steady smooth continuum centered around the 'target' of the moving fingers, in ios8 a very significant pause is followed by an overly quick ( too sensitive) increase in magnification focused on seemingly unpredictable directions, and ending with uncontrolled movement due to oversensitivity (as fingers are lifted). The quick-response, smooth action in ios6 allowed very rapid and precise zooming in and out to the needed level by  double-tap and slide during text reading. This is no longer possible. It is as if an artificial pause has been introduced, followed by a mouse speed that got turned up, and the algorythm changed that calculates the section of screen to be magnified. Now very often my fingers come to rest over the intended section of content, yet what shows magnified is the opposite corner!

    3. active zooming gesture is now inconsistent - Zooming in and out in iphone uses an up and down slide, while in ipad (regardless of rotation settings) requires you to move your hand left and right.

    4. 3-finger flicking motion is no longer slow enough. In previous versions one could flick the zoomed area into motion, allowing obe to view zoomed words slowly flow by. Not it flies by too fast to see.

    ANother thought....

the main reason that the zoom bugs are a problem for those of us with eyes strong enough not to need the voiceover is.... We don't have any good   Text-only zoom (word wrap) options for web browsing on IOS or for emails and other tasks. For desktop PCs we've got Firefox. Chrome, unfortunately has stopped offering text-only zoom. For IOS there is only Opera, which locks you into a single level of magnification. A pinch-to-magnify text web browser seems not to exist. The built-in option in Safari works sometimes, but often or mostly not. Does anyone know of another solution that allows fluid zooming of text-only on web pages or mail?

I have just submitted my feedback to Apple again.

If a substantial amount of feedback is sent, maybe there is a higher chance Apple will place priority on this problem and give us the zoom feature we once enjoy in the next update.

TThis issue still exists in 8.1.1

i am going to go to an Apple Store this weekend and see if anyone there is aware of this. maybe I can get a manager or something to send this to Apple and get it noticed.

wish we had an apple store here in greece but we don't just resellers and they definitely can't help on this one

i am really curious to see what they are going to say even though i don't believe they can do much part form reporting the issue with the same way as we send feedback to apple

but please let us know if you have any updates!

Yes please, that will be very helpful.

we do not have an apple store in Singapore too.

This move is definitely better than just waiting here.

I've read back through all the posts in this thread and I'm still trying to work out exactly what the problem is people are having with the zoom function in iOS 8?

I'm NOT doubting people are having problems. I'm trying to work out what the problem is. All the Zoom functions work as intended and seamlessly, in iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 5s.

I also have a visual disability, (optic atrophy), but my vision isn't so bad that I need to use VoiceOver, although I do find the new Speak Screen function in Speech quite useful at times.

I rarely use three fingers for Zoom anymore and instead I mainly use the Controller. It was a bit awkward to get the hang of it at first, especially scrolling, but now I think it's the best Zoom feature to date. It's so much easier navigating with one finger instead of three, especially on an iPhone screen. Everyone is going to be different of course, depending upon the type of visual disability they have and also the degree.

I changed the wallpaper on my home screens to a dots matrix Grey (one of the choices already in the phone), so that my apps and in particular the Controller are easier to see. And you can change the visibility of the Controller (more opaque / less opaque), or hide it completely using the black dialogue box that irritates ioannisfromaddison so much. No criticism intended!

I love the fact that it's a simple one finger tap on the Controller to turn the dialogue box on or off, and if the Controller is under the dialogue box tap anywhere on the screen to make the dialogue box disappear.

Double tap the Controller to zoom in or out to your previously pre-set zoom level.

Use the slider on the bottom of the dialogue box (if you're already zoomed in) to zoom in or out even more. You can also set a maximum zoom level in the Settings Zoom menu.

Once zoomed in, quickly swipe inside the Controller to make the Controller EXPAND, and then scrolling around the screen becomes a one finger walk in the park.

I have everything switched on in my Zoom Settings.

I can't help but wonder if some of the reported problems are caused by people adjusting their settings and then NOT following the correct path back to the Home Screen and thereby NOT saving the changed settings?

BTY if you must insist on using three finger zoom, I would turn off the Controller in Settings, not just hide it at the black dialogue box!

It's 2am, I'm tired, and I'm not sure what the tone of what I've just written sounds like, but it's not intended to offend anyone! Goodnight!

hello and thanks for the feedback

i have some points here that iw ould like to make clear

first of all i like the three finger zoom and i like it so much that i don't want to"adapt" to something new...ts not that i am resisting to change..but to be honest this is a feature for people with disabilities not a new feature that we will need to learn and use like airdrop or airplay etc,

as for the controller the controller in my case is switched off and the region is elected to full zoom

However even if the full zoom is selected in some cases, especially when the keyboard is displayed..now it witches to  windows zoom by itself

all of us have noticed that zooming in has changed regarding its accuracy even though we have selected "focus on zoom"

I'm like you (optic atrophy) ..even though we cant really compare  if we don't know each other, as concerns vision. i am visually impaired and only use zoom feature like you. I only use Speech when there is a huge text, paragraph anyway and its better to just listen to it that zoom in and read it

The annoying thing that i mentioned isn't the controller, is the black dialog window with all these options. Not sure why this keeps on appearing (has lots of options but i just want to zoom..and move around the text so s to see it and read it and thats it!

Again zooming in with three fingers...try it yourself and let us know, still isn't that accurate Probably you haven't noticed this because you are using the controller with the slider  that you can't really tell if it is accurate or not..but if you compare zooming with three fingers on iOS 7 and iOS 8 you will definitely see that it isn't that accurate no the later one.

Hey Robbo2, I tried the zoom controller. it really need some getting use to. however this are some concerns i face personally:

    1. I find it a hinder for a button to be permanently lying around the screen.

    2. for me locating the button will take me sometime compared to throwing 3 fingers on the screen.

    3. other problem like opening keyboards and zoom switches to a window mode, and double tap with 3 fingers is not instant like it use to be are some of my concern.

I am just waiting for this feature to be repaired before i switch to an iphone 6+

NEWEST UPDATE Dec 9th, 2014 pm my iPhone 5s cause the triple tap button to no longer work with zoom. The triple tap shortcut works with other options like grayscale, or invert colors, just no longer ZOOM. So I did detective work to see if zoom stopped entirely.  Zoom still works but now I have to show the contRoller.  I totally and absolutely believe this was because of the update

Hey bri2k, i have also updated to 8.1.1 recently fortunately for me so far there is no such issues.

I am now using the iphone 6+ and things on the zoom have been turning out good for me. Though not as smooth as before, but over all i am still enjoying the whole experience.
