Q: Bootcamp and Yosemite upgrade - potential data loss warning

There are two specific cases that I am currently aware of which indicate potential data loss during Yosemite upgrade.

Please see

"Missing Operating system_ " After installing Yosemite

Windows 7 partition gone after installing Yosemite

This is the other side affect of Yosemite upgrade, which is lost functionality

windows 8 does not recognise Macintosh HD, No drive Letter

Please avoid an upgrade to Yosemite if you also have Bootcamp, till the data loss issue has been investigated and root cause established.

One significant difference between you and many others, is that you do not have a Yosemite converted CoreStorage volume, you are still on regular JHFS+ file systems. Thanks for posting your information. Very helpful.

Can you look in Applications -> Utilities -> Console and look for logs for Yosemite upgrade? It should be in /var/log/install.log. If you can remove personal information and post it here, it would be very useful.

Loner T - I just wanted to take a minute to thank you. Between all the instructions and details you've provided across multiple threads, I was able to use the information to solve my issue which was that my Bootcamp Windows 8.1 partition was missing. I used TestDisk and Gdisk with your guidance and I can access my partition now. Thank you so much for spending all the time helping everyone here

Glad to see that it is helpful to people in solving an issue. I know there are User Tips. Let me find out if I can add a User Tip to help some diagnostics and some pointers for problem resolution.

    Hi Loner T,

I have just upgraded to Yosemite and I no longer have access to my windows 8.1 partition. It doesn't come up on the startup screen like it usually does. I have been reading most of the posts on this issue and I don't know what to do or how to fix it. I'm not very good with computers. I was hoping you can help me. I have some important school work inside that partition and my deadline is just around the corner, so this is pretty urgent. I would much appreciate if you can help me out! I tried to create a new post but it doesn't allow me to do it. please please please save me.....

Please start a new thread. There are a set of commands which can be used to start and figure out what fixes are needed. Let me know if you need them. Any of the referenced threads in this discussion should have those commands.
