Q: Ipad 2 apps freeze or close with IOS 8 update.

After updating to IOS 8 my iPad 2 32GB + 3G  has been ruined.  Apps freeze or close.  I have plenty of free memory.  The worst apps are Email, Safari, Maps. The ONLY thing that works when the screen is frozen is a cold restart.  I am furious.  I cannot rely on my iPad anymore.  I am restarting it 10-15 times a day.  Apps just close suddenly or the iPad freezes.   Does Apple think I can afford to throw away an iPad just because it is 34 months old?   Why force us to upgrade to an IOS that is clearly more than the ipad 2 hardware can handle?   I have been an Apple loyalist through other mistakes (I started with the first Classic Ipod, multiple Ipod Touch's, and 4 different iPhones) , but this blunder has me considering non-Apple options for the first time ever.  ANYTHING would be better than my crippled iPad now.  The Apple store person just shrugged and said "buy a new one".   Can you help?   I already turned off "Refresh Apps Automatically" and "Motion".   I even deleted Apps down to just essentials.

Did you try a clean install of the iOS using iTunes on your computer? I am surprised that te Apple Store didn't recommend that troubleshooting step.

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

No, I did not.  Thank you so much for responding.  I printed these instructions out and will try them at home tonight where my WiFi is and where my laptop is.  One question:  I do have an iCloud account with extra space and I usually backup to iCloud.  I have not backed up to iTunes in a while.  Can this process be done with iCloud instead of iTunes?  Thank you.

SSave your time, a wipe and restore doesn't work.  Our two iPads are just the same, poor software and one of the devices is only six months old.  I can't believe they told you to buy a new one.

you can't roll back and none of the fixes work, not that you should have to turn this off and that on, what did Apple say when Steve jobs was alive, it just works......

You need to get your iPad back to the way it came "out the factory door" ... with a "clean system" on it. That's the reset to its factory default condition, using your iTunes program, which gets rid of any corrupted files in your system and for what is called "a clean system install". There has been so many users here reporting good results from this, that I've lost track of how many.

Even if you had no problems at all, I would recommend that users do this at least once a year, because it keeps your operating system clean and clear. But, be sure to do your backups!

Thank you Demo and Star Traveler.  I did the backup and restore to iTunes on my Macbook last night.  This took about 85 minutes.  After the restore the iPad apps all said "waiting"  for about an hour so I went to sleep with them "waiting" all night long.  In the morning they were still "waiting".  I deleted all deletable (non-native) apps on the iPad and tried syncing with iTunes on iMac.  This process got stuck again with all iPad apps again getting stuck on "waiting".  This afternoon I tried syncing again and this third time worked.  In the Backup and Restore I did lose all of my Sent mail from my email program which is not Mac or Gmail (only the Inbox was preserved).    SO FAR, my apps are NOT freezing.   There is still a delay with everything on the iPad - starting apps, switching apps, getting a new Safari tab, loading a map.  This true regardless of using WiFi or cellular access.  I am grateful for the help.  Backup and Restore is a lot of work but it helped.  I'm grateful my programs are not freezing.  I'm not happy the iPad is as slow as it is.    Thank you.

I also did a factory reset last night myself. It took a good bit of time for all of my apps, phots, movies, etc to sync back to much iPad, but it was worth the work and the time that it took. I am happy to hear that it helped you.

Update Nov 4:  I wanted so much for the backup and restore to fix the problems with my IPad 2 freezing and closing apps.   The speed for email did improve a little with the backup and restore.  But as I use more apps I am having more problems STILL with either freezing or the app abruptly closing.  Kindle app:  always takes two tries to open (first attempt closes immediately).  SLOW moving from page to page.    WhisperSync audio in Kindle NO LONGER works!?!  Safari is glacially slow.   Screen freezes for up to a minute, then releases.  New tabs either don't open or open late.  Puffin browser is now very slow on every page load  (used to be faster than Safari).  Amazon Prime Streaming Video and Netflix are slow to open and freeze (requiring reboot) about 50% of the time.  Youtube videos freeze and won't release.   All of the fun has gone out of using my iPad.   PLEASE APPLE - give me a way to downgrade from IOS 8 back to iOS 7.

When you did the factory default reset with your iTunes program on your computer, did you happen to test it out before reloading your backup onto the iPad? I only say that because it's possible that the problem could stem from what's on the backup. If it runs okay in the factory default condition but not with your stuff reloaded onto the iPad, that's how you would know.

However, if it is still a problem in the factory default condition, then I would have it checked out for any hardware problems. There have been a few users reporting hardware issues and getting a replacement iPad from Apple.
