I'm having this issue as well. I don't even need my computer to go to sleep fully, simply having the display sleep or display power cycled will occasionally result in the "can move cursor around, can't interact with Mac in any way even remotely" situation. Only solution is to power cycle (yuck) using the physical power button.

I have a 2010 Mac Mini running Yosemite plugged into a receiver and then a TV using HDMI, and I use an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Trackpad with it. I had zero problems under Mavericks with this kind of issue. I run a lot of weird random software on it like a VPN, a media server, etc. but this happens even with all of that turned off. It happens both with a Mavericks to Yosemite upgrade install and a bare USB drive Yosemite install.

Really looking forward to some remedy!

Thank you so much for posting that fix, it worked beautifully on my 2009 iMac and (even after 5 years) I still don't know a lot about Mac's so I had no clue what to do.  Seems to be working fine after a whole day so, again, thanks!

One more update on problems associated with sleep mode...I find that sometimes the background image on the desktop is altered when the Mac Mini comes back from sleep, I go into desktop preferences and have to reset the image to its original setting (ex. fit to screen)

not a major problem compared to freezing but mention it here in case others have experienced the same

I too seem to have sleep-wake issues, although I have a Mac Air, in a Henge Dock attached to dual Dell monitors via Firewire and VGA (using a J5 USB/VGA adapter). Logitech bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Intermittent issues getting Air to wake up, requires a reboot, and sometimes freezes mid-rebooting.

Actually still having issues when the display sleeps for a long period of time it "freezes" again, and it just kind of randomly locks up in the middle of things and I have to reboot again.  I haven't rebooted the Mac as much in the past 5 years as I have this past week.

    Hi All,

me too having the same issue, and quite disappointed as I'm also a "switcher". As my first MAC, I've bought a Mac Mini i7 2.6GHz with SSD option, and 16 GB of RAM; I was very happy of my choice since I've installed Yosemite....

Just to be helpful, I'll try some troubleshooting steps during these days, and I'll report to you:

    - 1st test would be to unplug the speakers 3.5mm jack from the audio output of the mini, before clicking on the STOP button,  and see whether the sleep/wake function will works.

    - 2nd test would be to enable to HDMI monitor audio interface, and see whether the sleep/wake functions will works with the speakers connected to the monitor. As reference I have an LG 23MP65HQ.

For what I've read, diving through all the posts, is that enabling the audio through HDMI will not allow me to modify the volume with the Apple keyboard, and the volume icon will appears grey.

I hope Apple will fix asap this issue, I've not switched to MAC to deal with such issues.

Just to update about my tests, I can confirm that unplugging the 3.5mm jack of the speakers before clicking on "STOP" to put in sleep the Mini worked fine: the mini woke up without problems.

Quite annoying, but, before an official patch will be released, we have a workaround.

Same problem here on my Mini; after upgrading to Yosemite, waking from sleep wakes up the display; cursor can be moved but no input is accepted. Also, the computer clock on the status bar seems to freeze.

Display (and audio) plugged via HDMI, no other external speakers are attached (so nothing is connected in the 3.5mm jack). Magic mouse and wireless keyboard are the only other devices connected.

I'm now resolving the problem by reverting to Mavericks via Time Machine.

Just to provide a feedback about:

Yosemite update 10.10.1 solved the sleep/wake issue on my Mac mini.

    Here below my configuration:

    Mac mini late 2012 - i7 2.6GHz - 16gb of RAM

Monitor LG 23MP65HQ connected via HDMI cable

    Apple Wireless Keyboard

    Apple Magic Mouse

Audio plugged to common PC amplified speakers.

The 10.10.1 update solved this issue for me as well!

About the OS X Yosemite v10.10.1 Update - Apple Support (information)

OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 Update (download)

Mac Mini (mid-2010) with HDMI video and audio, nothing attached to optical/analog output...was consistently locking up whenever my TV or reciever were turned off. Now it works great! Good luck everyone.

As described by Darkkz:  Deleted SystemConfiguration folder (after saving a copy to Desktop--just in case).  Shutdown immediately.  Zap the PRAM (command option P R).  Reboot.

Solved problem waking from sleep (blank screen, usually with mobile cursor) with iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011 after most recent Yosemite update.

Sorry alrori, I know your post is old by now, but what is the difference between the "computer sleep" - in your example "never" and yet checking the box for "putting the hard disks to sleep when possible"?

I have all the other problems in this post, but haven't tried your settings, because they sound like they cancel one another out.  Thanks,

Same problem started happening on my 2014 Mac Book Pro after the 10.10.1 update. It had been fine up until then. Love bug fixes that just pass the bug on to another platform. Have turned off computer sleep completely for now, but this is a big pain. Hope they get it fixed soon.

Same here. Bandnew iMac Retina - migrated all data and settings from my old 2011 iMac. Apparently the old one hasn't had ANY problems with sleep/wake. The new one now crashes and reboots after a few minutes of sleep/wake/sleep/wake...

    That's unbelievably annoying
