Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

So, I have a temporary workaround for now.  I can't connect my iPhone 6+ (iOS 8.1) to my Netgear wnr2000 router no matter what I do.  I've literally tried everything.

I was able to get my macbook pro (current model) to create a hotspot that my iPhone can actually connect to by broadcasting on channel 48 which is in the 5GHz spectrum.  It has worked for ~1 day without issue.  It won't be sufficient long term but it at least stops blasting through my mobile data while I'm at home.

Every other wifi broadcast channel caused either the Wrong Password, or Can't Connect message.

I would've replied to this post earlier but Internet playing up as you can imagine. The problem has not gone away whatsoever with all of the various tweaks and tricks for people saying to try and do it was working before it's not working now don't waste your time trying to fix other things around your iOS device as in the flat Dicie only thing that has changed everything else the state to shame

For me this 8.1 update has been working fine for this last week (I am UK based)

Before, I had the awful problems others were having.

(iPad Air, BT Infinity homehub 5 - this is also working on 5Ghz as should be).

It seems this update works for some and not others, there is clearly still a problem

    that Apple needs to address.

Try this using IOS 8 (any version through 8.1):

    1. Run an internet Speed Test using WiFi.  Ookla SpeedTest is fine.

    2. Now, simply open the Control Center, then close the Control Center without doing anything.

    3. Fairly quickly, re-run the Speed Test.  You'll notice about half speed, and very jerky (bursty) internet access.

    4. After closing the Control Center, this continues for about 35 to 40 seconds, then the WiFi interruption goes away.

This occurs on every device I can find (iPhone 4S, 5, 5S, 6, 6 Plus, iPad, iPad Mini).

Anybody have any ideas why?  This destroys any near-realtime applications like VOIP.

YEs i can replicate this  My internet plan is 18mbps. When i first hit speedtest it was 17mbps, opened control center and closed it, re-run the test, it was 10mbps. ****

Holy crap, I get this too.  I wasn't sure how you meant to open the Control Center.  Did you mean swiping up from the bottom to bring it up?  I went from 32mbit down and 12mbit up to 6mbit down and 5 mbit up after opening Control Center by swiping.  Apple Engineering please pay attention to this.

yes, swipe up to bring the control center, and then close it, re-run. well you got halved speed too, mission accomplished then.

I Have three iPads in the house.

two on iOS 7 are rock solid with no problems at all.

The iPad Air I stupidly updated drops wifi all the time.

I have just updated it to 8.1 and it's just as bad.

LEt me roll back and the typing issue where two capitals get added may go as well!

I Have spent thousands on Apple gear but will be buying Samsung if this is not resolved

ANd I will not be coming back

My wife had the exact same issues with flaky WI-FI. It was terrible I watched her iPad from from LTE to WI-FI and back again. I noticed the problem because we have Direct TV and use a Genie Go which needs a stable connection on the iPad. She did not even notice the problem because her connection was never gone but just switching from LTE to WI-FI. I also noticed a significant increase on our data from AT&T because she was using LTE and did not even realize it. Here is how I fixed it:

I had an Apple Airport Express. I plugged it in and extended my network with it. As soon as I hooked it up and started having the express extend my ASUS routers network the problem went away. I do have to note that all my Windows based devices, iOS7 devices and Android devices worked fine with just the ASUS router and the speed was great on them. For some reason the Airport stabalized the connection of the iPad and iPhone devices running iOS8 and 8.1. It is just too weird and I tested my theory by pulling the Airport Express and the problem started again. Plug it in and it all works.

    interesting,  I've had the opposite experience;

I have an Airport Extreme and extend the network using an Airport Express (both latest models). I use WiFi roaming (same SSID on both devices and both 2.4 & 5Ghz).  Worked great under iOS7. Once I loaded iOS8, started having problems when I moved to a part of the house served by the Express. If I turn off the Express, I get *better* connectivity on 2.4 & 5 but still the occasional hung connection.

My issue now is the coverage with just the Extreme is not enough. I have an ASUS on the way for improved coverage and we'll see what happens using just that device (no extending with the Express). If it's stable, I will add the Express back in but my hunch is the problem is with iOS, not the router hardware. Someone a while back mentioned MAC address randomization with iOS8, I'd like to know more about that. Seems like a suspect feature.

wwell I just had a wonderful chat with Apple care, they seem not to know anything about it. I did actually mention they should look at the forums and his reply was I don't get paid to look at the forums.

HE went on to say it is more likely my net work and down to throttling. He said iOS devices often get throttled and I should speak to them.

I can also replicate this issue on all my devices 5s, 5c, ipad2 and ipad air.

Pre iOS8 I normally had Ookla speedtest results on 5Ghz = 94.51Mbps/10.65Mbps, but after following your guide i get directly 30.27/6.81!

AND it seem to deterate even more (got 100/10mbit line):

    Run 1     88.27Mbps down / 10.60Mbps up

    Run 2     31.13Mbps down / 8.18Mbps up

    Run 3      4.20Mbps down / 6.71Mbps up

    Run 4      2.97Mbps down / 4.34Mbps up

Then it seem to stay with Run4 results for about 2-3 minutes untill its back to Run2 results. But its not untill i do a network reset I get the Run1 results back.
