Q: Does Apple Pay Use iCloud or iTunes Apple ID?

I have 2 Apple IDs in use on my iPhone 6, one for iCloud (sync'ing) and one for iTunes (purchases).  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4895#different%20id

 

I updated my iPhone 6 to iOS 8.1 and went to set up Apple Pay.  I have a credit card associated with my iTunes Apple ID, and I use that ID to make purchases from both the iTunes and Mac App stores routinely.  But the Apple Pay setup does not give me the option to, "Use Card on File with iTunes."  It's a personal Citibank Mastercard, so I'm pretty sure it should be usable with Apple Pay.

 

On the iPhone 6 I went into Setting > iTunes & App Store and ensured my credit card info was complete and that my region was the United States.

 

The only reason I can think that Apple Pay is not offering the opportunity to, "Use Card on File with iTunes," is that perhaps Apple Pay works using your iCloud Apple ID instead of your iTunes Apple ID.  Can anyone confirm or deny this?

 

FWIW, using the iCloud ID seems backward.  Folks using two Apple IDs would expect to use their iTunes ID for purchases, not their iCloud ID.

    You could test your theory by turning off iCloud in your iPhone temporarily why you attempt once again to set up Apple Pay.  Within Settings>iCloud you can just turn it off.  Also, under Settings>App Store and iTunes you should be able to see the Apple ID that the iPhone is tied to.  I don't know that the Apple Pay Setup program would automatically Not offer your registered Cr.. Card from iTunes.  Perhaps that is true, but it is also possible that it should offer that Cr. Card and then during the verification process produce a popup which says that card wouldn't work with Apple Pay.  Even if it doesn't automatically offer that card, you could simply select Add Card and then take a photo of the same card and let the process tell you if it works.

    WiseJD, that's a good way to test the theory, I agree.  But I'm not really blocked on doing anything here, this is more about technical curiosity.  So I don't plan to try that test, since signing out of iCloud means iCloud photos and docs get deleted from the phone and I'd have to get them downloaded again later.  The hassle exceeds my level of curiosity. 

     

    However, a co-worker pointed me to the iOS Security Guide (Apple Pay starts on page 24).  The second paragraph on page 27 says, "This allows iOS to instruct the Secure Enclave to render cards unusable by marking its copy of the AR as invalid under the following scenarios:

     

    • When the passcode is disabled
    • The user logs out of iCloud
    • ..."

     

    So there is some connection to one's iCloud Apple ID.  The connection appears to be quite minimal, but I accept this as sufficient circumstantial evidence that for users with two Apple IDs, one iCloud and one iTunes, the iCloud Apple ID is the one Apple Pay looks at when deciding whether to offer to include your existing credit cards.

     

    I'll stick with that as my theory unless someone presents a counterexample.  That is, if someone says they use separate Apple IDs on their phone for iCloud and iTunes, they have no credit card in the iCloud account, and Apple Pay *does* offer them the chance to, "Use Card on File with iTunes," (from their iTunes Apple ID).

    Try to enter your Credit Card manually within Passbook / Apple Pay to disprove your theory that your on-file iTunes Cr. Card wasn't offered due to your two IDs.  If you were unsuccessful at entering the Cr. Card manually it would kind of say the different IDs was not the problem in the first place.
