Q: Report on the NEW iOS 8.1 Revision Today

I've been waiting for the iOS 8.1 revision today, as it contains some bug fixes and some NEW FEATURES added. It's out now, but I can't get to a WiFi spot just yet, as I'm running around. I'll be getting to it later today.

HOWEVER, please do let us know of some of your problems have been fixed or if there are some problems remaining. I hope this is going to help a lot of people today!

The two new items that I've been waiting for are "iCloud Photo Library" (in beta, though) and "iCloud Drive"!

I have deactivated iCloud drive. Still active ist "Photos" and myPhotostream. I thought it is still syncing to my iPad but not all pictures are there now. This should not happen if only iCloud drive is deactivated?

As I've seen it when observing how this works, I saw the "iCloud Photo Library" show up inside the "iCloud Drive" when I activated it. SO ... If it shows up inside the "iCloud Drive" and then you delete "iCloud Drive" ... of course your pictures are going to go "POOF!" ... :-) ...

Think of it this way ... if you have a collection of files and folders inside a "hard drive" and one of those folders inside that hard drive contains all your pictures ... and then you decide to ERASE that hard drive ... what do you think is going to happen to all your pictures on that hard drive?

I haven't seen it said that the installation of iOS 8.1 needs ample free space to do its work, but it does. You should be allowing around 5 or 6 GB of free space. That's not a scientific measurement, but just from what I saw when doing mine. I initially didn't have enough free space when I started ... It was 2.1 GB free. What happened is a repeated cycle of shutting down and rebooting. I opened up more room and then it went through without any further problems. So do make sure you give it ample free space.

Since this is what ""tony 1305" said ...

"I Have to say that I'm trying this after another factory reset and manually downloading apps rather than a backup and it seems to be working!

woohoo! Fingers crossed that I get my smooth running iPad back"

... what problems would that be, that you're having?

Probably the same issues I initially had, are still having albeit not as bad, and a good percentage of the other contributers to this particular thread!

Have you done the clean system install and tested it out in that state to see if the problems have gone away?

What troubleshooting measures have you taken?

SInce the 8.1 upgrade my iPad 2 has been slow and jerky to the point where I feel like throwing it in the bin. Do have any suggestions or quick wins for improvements? I have plenty of free memory space

    Thanks Mel

I have a "troubleshooting methodology" that some other iPad 2 users have had success with. Some have had to only do part of it (not go to Apple Support), while others had to go further and even test out their backup. Some have found bad apps causing problems, and others have not. Before you try it, you don't know how far along you'll have to go.

Follow this procedure for a Troubleshooting Methodology ... basically reset to factory default condition -BUT- be sure to do the following methodically and also to follow the part with Apple Support!

First you want to make sure you have several backups of your data and done with a couple of "different" sources. Be sure to understand what data is backed up and what is NOT on iCloud Backup and iTunes Backup. Use a variety of methods for backup ... you might check into Dropbox, in addition to your Apple options.

Then turn off your desktop anti-virus software when using iTunes for this reset to factory default. After you do that reset, then leave your iPad in its factory default state and see how it operates then. If you encounter any problems in that factory default state, then take it to Apple Support, and let them know that you have just reset it to that state with iTunes and have not put any of your data back on and it is operating in this fashion (whatever the problem is) in that pristine state. Make sure you keep that trouble ticket number, because if it has to be escalated through Apple Support, you're going to find all communications tied in with that number. If the lower level help isn't able to help you, then escalate it to a higher level to examine the problem. Keep at it with that trouble ticket number until Apple Support arrives at a solution to that problem. Be methodical and keep at it.

On the other hand, if everything is okay with the factory default condition, then restore your backup. Some people have discovered that the problem resides in the apps or something in the restored backup. If that's the case, then it's going to be trying and difficult to find out which developer's app is causing you the problem. And ... it's true ... that a developer not following Apple's instructions and guidelines for his app can CAUSE YOU TROUBLE. This kind of thing does happen from developers, especially when a new system upgrade comes out, because some developers ignore what Apple tells them about changes coming, and what they do BREAKS SOMETHING.

This is a troubleshooting methodology that you are going through. See it through to the end.

Mel I was just reading an article where the update 8.1.1 which is due very soon will address the iPad 2 and iPhone 4s sluggishness issue you are dealing with. My Sister is using my iPad 2 and suffers the same problem. We tried a hard reset by holding the power and home button at the same time. Helped a little. Not much. Hopefully the new update will solve it.
