Q: How do I uninstall/reinstall bluetooth software that is corrupted?

Long story short, the bluetooth software in my OS is messed up. Any idea how I can uninstall/reinstall it without doing a COMPLETE OS install? I'm tired of deleting the bluetooth prefs and restarting to fix the issue and having two keyboards (one BT, the other wired) on my desk every day to swap out when my BT fails. My beach ball of death is spinning right now as we speak after trying JUST to select the dropdown from my menu bar.

Any help to easily reinstall the software would be greatly appreciated.

after upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite on my Imac 2013 (basically my BT apple keyboard and mouse work perfectly but I can't get my mobile phone (samsung galaxy star) seen by my mac... it pairs but when I try to download something it doesn't work saying it is disconnected) so I followed the above instructions given by redfernplace... but once I click on the bluetooth explorer icon, the bluetooth symbol appears in the lower app bar and nothing else happens.... I downloaded the Hardware IO Tools for XCode 6.1 file.

Reset the SMC.  X-code has nothing to do with anything. That information is years old.

Incidentally, next time you have a problem, I suggest you start a new thread. Piggybacking on old ones will not get many responses.

I reset the smc and pram but that doesn't change anything, I tried using another mobile phone too, a motorola xt530 the same thing happens, if I send something from the phone to the pc all that happens is what I think is the download window on the mac but closes down too quickly for me to be sure and then I get and blutooth send failure message on the phone.

    Is apple looking into this?

Thank you very much X423424X. It worked out very nicely. My bluetooth devices are now recognized.

Here are the steps performed on a MacBook Pro 13" OS X Yosemite - 10.10.2 for those who are not familiar with developer tools :

    - Install Xcode (you could find it on the apple store).

    - In the app, go to : Xcode / Open developer tools / More developer tools…

    - A web page opens and you can download Hardware IO Tools for Xcode (my version was for Xcode 6.3 beta 4 - March 24, 2015). You need to register as a Mac developer.
    - Open the package and the Bluetooth Explorer.app
    - In the app, go to : Tools/Modify Software & Device Configuration
    - I checked the first 4 checkboxes that are :

         - 'Recant' connected Apple HID devices
         - 'Full Factory Reset' Connected Apple HID Devices

         - Delete link keys from the Bluetooth module
         - Delete global bluetooth preference file

    - Click on Perform actions and restart your mac.

    Job done, it works.
