Q: Upgrade to Yosemite — Quick Report.

Took the plunge and upgraded my personal/professional computer (15" rMBP) to Yosemite today.  Quick report:

No hiccups at all.

The new system font _alone_ is worth the upgrade if you use Retina screens.  I am pleased with the "look".

Upgrading 100K Image Library took < 2 minutes.  No performance problems observed.

Upgrading 1M Image Library took <5 minutes.  Also no performance problems.

So ... no problems?

Not exactly.

JPG Image files look different.

- JPGs look a little "sharper" and more than a little increased in saturation and contrast.  I'm seeing almost-blown sections in photos that I don't remember being that way.  (I don't know how to test this — anyone?  My top hypothesis is that I am seeing a difference where there is none.  I spent part of the afternoon intently comparing monitors.)

- Converted-from-RAW Images (all my cameras are Sony) look the same.  (I always use a custom RAW Fine Tuning setting.)  Have not imported/converted any new RAW files.

NB: I have not recalibrated my monitors since the upgrade.

Also, fwiw: I repair all Libraries regularly, and always before upgrading to a new version of Aperture.

Hope that helps someone.

Glad to hear your upgrade came with little trouble.

Mine hasn't gone so well. My Mac Pro is about 5 mos. old. It has had sleep/wake issues and random crashing since I began using it. I've installed Yosemite at least 4 times in the last two days. The result has been the same every time. I get a 'flashing' or 'recycling' of the Finder at the end of the install. This makes the computer entirely unusable as the Finder flashes about once every 2-4 seconds.

My next move is to call AppleCare. I think I've got a lemon on my hands.

I have not seen this increase in sharpness and saturation for JPGs, Kirby. But none of my macs has a Retina display. Perhaps it is a better handling of   Retina displays in Yosemite.

    A great bonus picture!

Hi Gerald.  Sorry to hear of your problems.  It sounds as though you are following the sensible path.  I received a bad computer once from Apple.  Went through thorough back-and-forth trouble-shooting with Apple, including replacing some hardware components and doing more than one clean-and-install.  The issues continued, and they replaced the computer.  The replacement performed without trouble.

    Good luck.

.  I thought the slightly over-saturated light from the west was appropriate.

I will calibrate all monitors today — which will make any comparison of "before Yosemite" and "Yosemite" valueless.  I would like to be able to confirm whether there is or is not a difference in the rendering of JPGs.  I don't have the resources to test this.

I just upgraded my MacBook Air and my first "test" using Aperture is perfect. Will now upgrade my iMac 7i...

It seems they added a few tools to manage RAW files. Haven't tested them yet...

    Follow-up:

All good  .  Re-calibrated all monitors — even went so far as to set a custom White Balance for the wide-gamut PA271W — and everything seems accurate and reliable.  JPGs are back to "normal".  RAW and Tiff work as expected.  Aperture, PS, and all other programs display as expected in all modes on all monitors.

The RAW converter for my older Sony FF cameras seems unchanged.  The RAW converter for the not-so-old but not-so-new RX1R is changed, showing more boost and contrast.  (I assume that I see the difference in RAW converters if "Show Original" for an Image that was imported prior to the OS and Aperture updates and has never been adjusted.)  I customize the RAW Fine Tuning to lower the boost and the hue boost anyway.

    All-in-all, an easy upgrade.

    —Kirby.

(PS:  I _hated_ the new over-saturated under-designed system icons.  I have already replaced the flash-bulb-after-glow blue of the system folder icon, and am looking for other icons to use instead of the supplied ones.  LiteIcon is a very easy way to do this.  (So easy I couldn't figure out how to use it at first.))

    All good  .

    Good to know, Kirby!

(I assume that I see the difference in RAW converters if "Show Original" for an Image that was imported prior to the OS and Aperture updates and has never been adjusted.)

    I think so.

It would be good to know, how the new RAW processing performs for difficult lighting situations.

I have rather serendipitously found the reason for the Desktop icons disappearing, reappearing, and the Finder crashing repeatedly. It is connected to the Transporter private cloud storage system. I use it to sync files between computers on my home network.

Transporter has a fix and explains the problem. https://support.filetransporter.com/user_guide/AA-00398

Thought I should post this info in case there are others having this problem.
