Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Jeezuz apple! So it sounds like Angry Birds and game center could be causing issues, as well as control center and then also airplay. Unbelievable oversights in QA testing. Is it even worth having betas when you don't listen anyway. Apparently wifi issues were brought up during all the betas but apple just released ahead anyway. iOS8 is a disgrace, the bugs outweight the gain. As far as I can see some worthless health apps (I'm not into all that health monitoring nonsense) versus countless bugs to exisiting functionality. Useless.

FWIW my throughput is all over the place. Slowing on speedtest to a quarter of expected speed and then out of nowhere picking up. It affects apps too where things that work intra network go sluggish, then fast, then sluggish with no ryhme or reason. I suspect airplay is a big factor on mine as I have apple tv and Airport express (used to join my wifi and provide airplay to my hifi). Half the time I will pull up control center and the airplay icon will be very slow to display. Sometimes it'll show only say the apple tv available and take another minute to show the Airport Express or vice versa. Very odd behaviour. The wifi potential is there as when it does work properly it flies along at old iOS7 pace but you just cannot predict what it's going to be like. All this on the iPhone 5S whilst my iPad third gen seems for the most part unaffected. Maybe down to different wifi chipsets in each device or the fact the iPad displays control center differently so maybe the implementation doesn't cause as many problems.

I can confirm that after one week of upgrading to 8.1 I have had no problems with the Wi-Fi until yesterday at which point I completely lost access to my Rueterwhen I regained access to the Wi-Fi Ruta it challenged my password claiming it was incorrect to rectify this it was necessary to reset my Wi-Fi Ruta by switching it on and off again there was no action I could takeon the iPad that would affect access to the Wi-Fi once it was lost in my opinion iOS 8 iOS 8 .01 and iOS 8 .1 all have the same issue the upgrade to the one Wi-Fi Ruta internally to Apple'svarious devices was not coded correctly additional testing was required before lunch I do not find this kind of unprofessional behaviour acceptable therefore in future I will not be recommending Apple products to my friends and family I will continue to use my iPad mini simply because I cannot afford to replace it

Just to know what is the final status of all wifi issues with IOS8.1 ??? because I upgraded my iPad 4 to IOS8.1 this week-end and no longer possible to connect on my Cisco Aironet AP-1141N-E-K9 model with WPA2-Enterprise.

I already tried to deactivate WIFI System Networking but stay the same story BUT no issue with iPhone 7.1.1 and MacBook-Pro on same aironet device.

thanks to let me know if another is foreseen in the coming days ?

    iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

I can also replicate this issue on all my devices 5s, 5c, ipad2 and ipad air.

Pre iOS8 I normally I had Ookla speedtest results on 5Ghz = 94.51Mbps/10.65Mbps, but after following your guide i get directly 30.27/6.81!

AND it seem to deterate even more (got 100/10mbit line):

    Run 1     88.27Mbps down / 10.60Mbps up

    Run 2     31.13Mbps down / 8.18Mbps up

    Run 3      4.20Mbps down / 6.71Mbps up

    Run 4      2.97Mbps down / 4.34Mbps up

Then it seem to stay with Run4 results for about 2-3 minutes untill its back to Run2 results. But its not untill i do a network reset I get the Run1 results back.

    All,

I tried the escrge 1843 method (iPad Air 2 WiFi Connectivity Issues:  RESOLVED) last night and it definitely made things a lot more stable but speed was affected. My usual Speedtest app gives me 50 Mbs Down but after setting the networks to 5ghz - A only and 2.4ghz to B/G the maximum I was able to achieve was 25 Down.

Even after sleep and wake for several hours two out of  three devices (IPad Air 2 and 5S) remained connected  but unfortunately my iPhone 6 Plus which was behaving better on the previous 5ghz setting lost connection this morning and I had to toggle Wi-Fi on/ off.

So in summary this method is the best temporary fix to date (especially for Linksys/Cisco routers) albeit not perfect for all IOS devices in the same household.

I'm definitely going to buy the new ASUS AC68 router which I think will solve the problem as I'm hearing good reports from numerous sources!

i previously reported that my iPad air would lose its connection to my 5GHz wifi network after a few minutes and not reconnect. the 2.4GHz network worked fine. Happy to report that iOS 8.1 fixed the problem for me.

SSadly I think ios these days is trying to do too much and as a result there are problems everywhere. I miss the simpler days pre cloud when things just seemed to work as intended. But now even something that that should be in tech terms basic like wifi or even just a manual sync to a computer via usb are no longer a given that they work properly. Trouble is apple want to re invent the wheel all the time and bugs are all over the place. They just don't give an ios a chance to mature. A one year cycle is far too short as bugs go in fixed and then a new iOS comes along and throws many more bugs into the mix. I have my doubts but ios 8 might get better but no sooner than this happens ios 9 will be thrust and the whole big frustrations start again

My wife and I were each planning on buying an iPhone 6 this month.  But, since Apple hasn't yet figured out how to get WiFi working in iOS 8, we are not buying them.  There you go Apple, two lost customers.

It is incredible that this problem has been going on for over a month now with no resolution in sight.  I have all sorts of devices from many different manufacturers in my home and you know what, they all connect to WiFi flawlessly and with no hassles what-so-ever.  The only devices I have ever had any problem connecting with WiFi at anytime in my life are Apple products with iOS 8.  iOS8 bricked the WiFi connections on both my iPhone 5 and my iPad Air.  Seriously, WiFi is basic.  You get that working before adding any sort of bells and whistles.  After all, these devices are useless without connectivity.

I was out shopping yesterday with my daughter.  We found ourselves looking at Samsung tablets and Microsoft's Surface tablets.  I had never looked at them before.  They seemed pretty nice.  And they all connected to WiFi without any problem.  And my daughter's Samsung phone connected instantly to the store's free WiFi.  Huh, amazing!

The recent spate of posts to this thread have been very interesting... It seems that some of you are on to something!

Since it appears that Apple employees do not regularly monitor these discussions I suggest sending Apple the information that has been posted on this forum.

Perhaps if enough individuals directly contact Apple the engineers might get involved. Aside from helping each other, posting problems on this forum seem to go nowhere since Apple staffers do not regularly read the posts.

If I was in a position of authority at Apple I would certainly assign some employees to carefully monitor this forum. It would be a relatively easy way to discover the problems users are having and speed-up the bug-killing process. It's rather disturbing that Apple Store geniuses and Applecare phone reps do not seem to be aware of the WiFi glitches being reported by so many people...

I believe they do monitor these to some degree. I just think the company policy is to not address anything here directly or ever admit to any problem or discuss anything related to problems with the public. This wouldn't be the only major corporation that takes that stance. But I remember there were widespread issues with the 4s...software related as well... and recall the same, almost word-for-word response by the Genius,  "What? I've never heard of anything like this before?!  You're the first one who's complained about this"  I think that approach, or just plain silence, is what infuriates customers.  If they would just put out a statement that says "We understand that iOS 8 is causing wifi problems for some people.  We ask for your patience and we are working on a solution" would go a long way to prevent the Apple image from being tarnished.

I have not read most of the posts in the last few days so maybe this has been mentioned but I fixed my wifi disconnect by resetting the network, General/reset/reset nework settings.  This was recommended on another site I found.  It's worked well for two days now, no resets needed

Try shutting down any and all Angry Bird apps & see if that helps!
