Q: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Looks like other people have this question too - does anyone out there have any idea what can be done to resolve this? I have spoken to Acer about the problem and they are (quite rightly) under the impression that the monitor is not at fault, seeing as it wakes correctly with other computers.

I'm having the exact same problem.  New Mac Mini with 16 GB upgrade.  Using the HDMI for the first time with my Acer monitor, but once it goes into sleep I can't get the monitor to wake up very easily.  Sometimes turning it on and off a few times will solve it, but sometimes I need to crash the Mac and reboot (not an ideal solution!).  I've re-set my energy settings to "never turn off display," but I hope that the Mac folks will take a look at this and fix it in an update.

    Got the unit yesterday.

Yes same problem here, I use a Samsung p2350 monitor with Mac Mini 2.6GHz latest model.

I need to press the power button or shake my mouse a couple times or turn off my monitor to get the image on the display back.

    This is really weird.

Other problem i've found is sometimes the pictures is all messed up (please see pic)

    Anyone have this problem?

Wow, no I haven't experienced problems with the image like that. If I were you I'd try using a different HDMI cable, see if that helps.

The problem with my situation at the moment is that neither Apple nor Acer are willing to admit that there is a fault with the Mac or the monitor, mostly because I have tested both with other devices and they have worked fine. For example, when I tested the new Mac mini with a crappy old VGA monitor it woke up immediately without any problem. Annoyingly I don't have another HDMI monitor to properly diagnose the issue.

I'm afraid my knowledge of displays, graphics cards and cables are pretty non-existent so I very much hope that there's an expert out there somewhere who can advise on the best course of action! I really don't want to have to buy a whole new monitor!

I Agree. Try a different HDMI cable. I have seen issues like your screen with sub par cables.

Although I was not having the distorted picture that "tumcubus" has, I also used two different HDMI cables to see if that had caused the problem with my display not waking up (the second was a new Apple cable I bought yesterday).  However, the problem persists... .

Yeah likewise, I've tested with a few different HDMI cables and no luck. I've ruled out cables being the cause, for sure.

You are correct that the problem lies with the mini and/or Yosemite; it might be a combination issue. If you do a search here, you'll see there are plenty of posts related to issues just like yours. I have seen no real fixes at this time. My suggestion is to contact AppleCare and/or bring your mini in to an Apple Store or AASP. Until Apple hears enough about this, there probably won't be a fix. I'd also recommend giving them feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

today I will test the same setup same cables but with my old macbook

to see if it's really the cable or the Mac mini that is causing the not awake problems

and also the messed up color.

    Let's see how it goes.

I have the same problem with an Acer S276HL monitor connected by HDMI. If I put my late 2014 mac mini to sleep, it does so and the monitor looses signal and also goes to sleep. Then, when I wake the mac by typing a key, the power indicator light goes constant (indicating it has woken up) but the monitor does not come out of sleep. The only way to get the monitor to start again is to turn it off and back on again.

I suspect the mac mini is simply not sending the wake signal to the monitor.

My windows laptop has no problem in waking the monitor.

I'm having the same issue (2014 i7 3GHz, Apple HDMI cables).  To be honest, I'm not sure if power cycling my monitor, receiver, or plugging in a USB mouse made it wake up eventually, but after about a minute it did.  My old Mac had DVI to HDMI with the same monitor with no issues at all.  I'll call Apple to let them know, especially if tons of other people are having the same problem.

Similar issue, but using a TV via HDMI rather than a monitor - so waking the display seems to be ok, but often I lose the HDMI audio device as an output option. There is clearly something buggy with the HDMI support in the new Mac Mini's and/or Yosemite.

I've been having audio issues as well, sometimes I will lose a channel or two, but have recently seen complete loss of HDMI as an audio option.  I have no idea if the audio and sleep issues are related at all, so I didn't mention it before (although both using HDMI is rather suspicious).

I'm using an LED TV as a monitor as well, routed through an AV receiver.  I really don't think that the receiver is the issue, as everything else that had been or is using the receiver through HDMI up until the Mac Mini has had no issues at all.
