Q: Apple needs to stop forcing me to update Flash

RUkXusH.png

I find it presumptuous of Apple to disable Flash and force me to update it. This is my computer, believe it or not. Apple should not be allowed to take away my control.

Now, how do I stop them from doing this? Is there some hack or hidden setting that I can change?

Apple doesn't develop Flash, Adobe does. Any notice to update would come from Adobe.

So you would prefer to go on using an older version with security vulnerabilities? Adobe are quite proactive in updating Flash to prevent security risks, and it's advisable to keep up with the latest version. It only takes a couple of minutes to install.

Understood. And if you are not running the latest version of Adobe Flash, you will see this message. Adobe updates the version of Flash quite frequently to deal with security and other issues.

Yes. I have been using computers for over a decade, I am a software developer, and I have had my fair share of experiences with bugs, malware, and Flash. I do not need my hand to be held. It is my decision what to run on this computer, not Apple's.

Now, do you have anything for me to try?

Right, and I would like to disable that message so I can continue using my outdated version of Flash. My reasons need not be known to you or anyone at Apple.

I assume you know where to find the setting below?

Select the "Never check for updates" option.

Your screenshot won't load for me, but I assume you are talking about the "install system data files and security updates" setting (as it's called in Mavericks) in System Preferences. I don't want to disable security updates. I want to be able to use Flash and not be forced to update whenever Apple feels like it.

Sadly the forums have been long suffering from the photos not showing. Again, this is not Apple reminding you to update flash, it is Adobe.

Open System Preferences - Flash Player - Advanced Tab - in Updates section, select - Never check for updates.

Okay, I'll try that next time. Let's see what happens. I still think it's Apple and not Flash, but I might be wrong.

Thanks. You seem like a patient guy.

What I do is use the Click2Flash extension for Safari so that if there is Flash on the page, it is not enabled unless I say so. If Flash is not enabled, it won't bother me about updates. I am only asked to update Flash if I actually let Flash run on a particular page.

On sites like YouTube, the use of Click2Flash means I can go ahead and still watch videos using whatever alternative player they have like an HTML5 player. I don't have to deal with Flash, or Flash update notices, on those sites. On all other sites, using Click2Flash means I won't get bugged about a Flash update just because some random ad uses Flash.

What we would prefer is not to have to update every two weeks. This "forced to update" issue has come up seven or eight times in the last school year, forcing me to update about 300 computers. This is a colossal waste of time. You know, I would love it if web developers would ditch Flash and use HTML5, but that hasn't happened. I understand Apple and Adobe have issues, but Apple deciding to force me to update Flash overtime Adobe has to address vulnerabilities is only making me have issues with Apple.
