Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Well I thought the same thing, that we were just a forum on our own, collectively trying to resolve an issue, and was considering my options with my bad iPad, until I was contacted by an Apple Tech rep just recently. They do monitor these posts as the request came in ref to my earlier posts here. I've never sent in a bug report or anything else to anyone. I'm not a computer programmer or genius, just a working dad trying to get my iPad 3 fixed. Had a good hour plus long session of question/answers and information gathering. Looked at all my settings, router info, etc.

One thing I DIDN'T do, that he had me do, was turn OFF location services. I did that and was then finally able to connect, albeit sporadically, to my home network, which I have never been able to do since downloading any version of IOS 8. Maybe that will help some on here? It then acted much like many others on here have described, excruciatingly slow and intermittent however.

After gathering info on my equipment and symptoms, we downloaded the wifi monitor profile program from Apple that others have mentioned on this thread, to my symptomatic iPad 3. I then attempted to use it at multiple places the last 24 hrs. trying to connect it to several different networks to hopefully gather more data. I kept a detailed written log of what/where/when I tried to connect my iPad wifi, both successfully and unsuccessfully. Sent all that data back to Apple today. It was explained to me that this data will go to the engineers and be used for further evaluation.

I did not ask if there was a problem, or ask *** is going on, it was obvious, and I was just glad to hopefully help. Do I like being an amateur software tester for Apple? Not really, unless they can add another zero to the left of the decimal point of my current job! I am however glad to hear they are reaching out to folks and gathering information to hopefully resolve this issue. I'm not an Apple or Android or anything bandwagon cheerleader, I've had both. But I was impressed that a big corporation like Apple contacted me, the little guy, direct. I hope it does us all some good. Until then, I would keep posting signs and symptoms here, as maybe it will help them in troubleshooting and finding the common thread.

Having same problems as everyone is talking about.  My iPhone 6 is working well but my wife's iPhone 4S has not been recognizing our home WifI (new Airport Extreme)?  It shows a "greyed-out" Wifi button and would not let me do anything-- even after resetting Network Settings multiple times.  I tried someones idea of putting her phone in the freezer for fifteen minutes (wrapped in a ziplock bag) and then restarted it afterwards.  It worked.  WTH?  I can only hope that Apple figures out what is going on and sends a "fix" soon because it's obviously ******* a lot of people off.

This is just absurd.  There are reasons to use 5Ghz mainly the fact that I PAID for a router that uses that band and I should be able to use it for ALL my devices.  This is definitely related to the iOS update and therefore is NOT a hardware problem.  Fix the iOS!  Changing your DNS server is NOT a solution it is a temporary workaround - AND that's only IF it works!  Nothing I have tried and I have been trying for two weeks now has worked.  My wifi ***** and my phone and iPad are now completely useless other than sending and receiving calls.  This is NOT how this is supposed to work.  At least admit that there is a problem.  Ignoring it is not going to make it go away.  I hate how Apple just refuses to believe they can do anything wrong!  Come on, do you really need another class action lawsuit to make you do something about this?

Just make sure Angry Birds is not open! This drains wi-fi to almost zero!

Well ive just about managed to sort my wifi out. It turns out that there is a major issue with Angry Birds Friends. Provided I don't launch it, my connection stays ok. If I attempt to use the App, it refuses to load and destroys my connectivity. The only way round it is to reset my Network Settings and reconnect to my home wifi (BT Homehub dual band 2.4ghz and 5ghz). What's really weird is the the app will run on public access points (The Cloud) but once I get home and reconnect to my home network I have to reset the network settings again.

I thought ios8.1 had resolved my wifi issue, it has in that I can connect to 5ghz but over the last  few days it's started disconnecting again . I am so fed up of this. Ios7 worked so well...this is actually crap. Had a case open with Apple since iOS came out in september and my iPad mini retina still is having problems. im not allowed to swear on here so cannot fully express how livid I am with this. I've kept my mums identical mini retina on ios7 and it works perfectly and does not disconnect or slow down when browsing the exact same web pages with both iPads next to each other. Thanks apple! I love paying premium prices for premium devices that don't work properly .

I Think people are doing some great troubleshooting here. Personally my wifi never drops are fails to connect but I do suffer erratic throughout and slow AirPlay detection in control centre. So there are two major glitches at hand. Those who can't connect/drop and those with poor throughout. For the latter it is clear possible culprits are things like AirPlay on home network, game centre and even control centre itself causing poor intermittent throughput. I get it on the 5s but not my third generation iPad - it's an awful bug that apple is being very poor to detect / sort. Surely their QA tests should of detected this. I bet they only bother testing on latest devices and don't even consider that most have things like AirPlay or game centre in play. They prob test a handful of scenarios on barebones devices and then arrogantly assume that all is fine

I've been using Apple products since 1995 and if there is one thing that I have learned over the years it's this maxim: Never Ever perform an OS update until the bugs have been worked out.

I understand the attraction of a new iOS version, I really do... iOS 8 has some very nifty new features, particularly if you own an iPhone 6. But I'm not upgrading our 5S iPhones until threads like this one die a natural death because most people have stopped having serious problems as the bugs have been fixed.

I came to the Apple forum to see how things were going with iOS 8. I'll be monitoring this thread as well as other websites until I deem it safe enough to upgrade my devices.

Of course, if you bought a new iOS device that came with iOS 8 upgrading isn't the issue... I also do not buy new Apple hardware when it is initially released. I wait at least a few months but sometimes it can be six months or longer before I am satisfied that I won't be buying a fancy and expensive new brick.

I Wish I'd adopted your approach. I upgraded fast because I worried that apps would start becoming ios 8 only. plus I hope to get the apple watch which I am sure will only work in sync with your phone if you have ios 8. I just think that apple have been particularly bad this time around with a garbage update. I don't deny a lot of people are doing ok with the ios but there are too many suffering. Essentially ios 8 is Russian roulette for people. No one can say with any certainty how it's going to be for some people. The only way to find out is risk the upgrade. But I think you have the right idea. At this rate though I have my doubts that Apple will ever address this. They seem more obsessed with the worthless health apps and adding pointless features rather than sorting stuff they have broke
