Nov 2, 2014 6:27 PM in response to dominic23by mjkdncr,★HelpfulThis didn't work for me. Any other suggestions? The drive will not pull the disc in. It's as if it's dead. Was working perfectly before the upgrade to Yosemite.

Nov 4, 2014 6:39 AM in response to Michael Dixon2by alex_h1,Hello Michael Dixon2,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
In order to troubleshoot this issue where the optical drive does not accept discs, please follow the steps below.
Doesn't accept discs
- Be sure to check your disc to make sure it is flat. You can check this by putting the disc upside-down on a flat surface. If the disc is bowed up on any side or in the center, do not use the disc because it might get stuck in the drive. Do not use discs that have anything attached to them or dangling from them (such as "sweeper" or cleaning discs).
- If the drive struggles when you put in a disc or stops part-way, carefully look at the disc for labels that may be interfering. If there aren't any raised labels then try putting the disc in a few more times.
- Try another disc to see if the issue is being caused by a specific disc.
- Make sure you insert the disc far enough for the drive mechanism to activate. You need to insert discs nearly all the way before the drive will activate and pull them in. If you don't completely insert a disc, the drive will reverse and push the disc back out.
- Allow the drive one or two seconds to accept the disc while it is fully inserted.
- Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
- If the drive repeatedly does not accept discs, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.

Nov 4, 2014 8:24 AM in response to alex_h1by acollier21,★HelpfulHey Alex,
I have the same issue and tried all of those things. I stuck the disc in as far as I could and it still wouldn't take it. I reset the SMC as well which actually helped my fan that would spin up all the time. Other than that, still no luck. Yosemite killed my drive

How much ram do you have?

Nov 8, 2014 4:45 PM in response to mjkdncrby sohlmac,I have a 2009 13" MacBook Pro with 8 GB RAM. I'm having the same problem. I don't know the last time it worked, but it was before I installed Yosemite. I've tried every fix suggested online, but nothing has worked.

Nov 11, 2014 9:39 PM in response to Michael Dixon2by billryan111,This is ridiculous. Newer OS's are supposed to NOT create MORE problems. Especially new problems with things that always worked before without a hitch.
My internal drive hasn't worked for a good 6 months after adding a SSHD. So I bought an external Super Drive which I shouldn't have had to buy. Now with the Yosemite update, it doesn't work anymore either.
Apple...your losing it man. You are supposed to stand for ease of use, extension of oneself, enjoyment of your products. All you are doing as of lately is costing me tons of time and more money to fix things.
I hope someone comes up with a fix with this soon. I'm deployed and use the drive for my insanity/p90x workouts.

Nov 12, 2014 10:57 AM in response to Colton217by Michael Dixon2,It's gotta be software. What are the odds of a lot of people's optical drives coincidentally dying when they upgrade to Yosemite?
Mine seems like it's just turned off. It doesn't grab the disk or anything when I stick it in.
