Q: Netflix display error with Safari 8/OSX 10.10 Yosemite

I am having an issue with playing Netflix content through Safari since upgrading to Yosemite. Specifically, Netflix will start to play the content and then display an error after a few seconds. The error reads "Whoops, something went wrong... display error. There appears to be a display problem. Please ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirror using airplay."

My monitor is HDCP compliant (HP ZR30W) and it's the only monitor connected to my 2014 MacPro. I presume this is an issue with the latest version of Safari and all the next extensions Apple added to support Netflix streaming without the Silverlight plugin.

Anyone have a solution for this or seen the same problem? The new Safari is crazy-fast and I'd prefer to use it with Netflix. Hate bailing to Chrome.

Same here, re the original post. Error in Safari but ok with Firefox and Chrome. I hate to be switching browsers between Hulu+ and Netflix. Also in Netflix Playback Settings I don't have that HTML option.

Is anyone having this problem who is NOT using external monitors? I'm just using my Macbook air (latest version of Safari/Yosemite) and Netflix constantly crashes, giving me the message "Please ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirrored using Airplay. Error Code: S7363-1266-48444350." I don't even know what Airplay or mirroring is, so I'm pretty sure that doesn't apply to me!

I do not have an external monitor on my mac mini but a webcam and I also receive the display error from netflix.

And my macbook showed the error message one time when i was watching videos on netflix as well.

It has been for a while and very annoying!  Hope the Apple team will fix it soon.

I'll chime in as well. Retina MBP, not able to use netflix in safari. Previously I just changed the options to have netflix use silverlight, but that option is gone now, and it appears silverlight is the only way. So I have to use Chrome to watch netflix.

Same here.  Late 2013 iMac hooked up to a HDCP compliant HP monitor via mini-display port to HDMI adapter.  Odd thing is, it worked fine a week ago.  Do the adapters not pass along the HDCP info?  Using Chrome to watch Netflix.

Also seeing this issue, using Safari 8.0.2 with Yosemite 10.10.1 on the built in display of my 2011 MacBook Air. Also happens when using an external apply display over mini display port. Intermittent, occurs roughly every 10-40 minutes of netflix watching.

I got the same error, even the same error code.

I had to unplug my Cinema display, then it will work.

This is ridiculous, I had been using the Cinema display as the main display for my MBP years and everything was fine.

I just got a 5K iMac.  My Cinema display now becomes the small second screen.  It works fine except with Netflix.

I am very unhappy with this plug unplug thing just to watch Netflix.

One additional problem with plug unplug is you really can't do it live. It locks up the 5k iMac.  You have better turn the iMac off to do that.  That means wasting time waiting for the reboot.

And it will wear out the connectors soon.

And in addition to that, the way they designed the 5K iMac is that all the sockets are at the back.  You really have to stand up, physically turn the machine away from the wall so you can stretch your neck in to see the holes just to plug and unplug the external monitor.  What's going on with Apple?

Apple used to be so trouble free.  Now, Yosemite won't work with so many things it's not even funny.

And by the time Apple catches up, it's next generation upgrade and the game start over again.  I bet you it's just a few lines in Yosemite.  Why is it so hard for Apple to do that?

    This is crazy.

Most of you are downgrading the quality of your netflix.

So you're aware, the new Yosemite OS has added html5 option for netflix which enables 1080p.  Until Yosemite, ALL mac browser version of Netflix including firefox and chrome was limited to 720p and 5000kbps bitrate.  Using safari and html5, you can now watch 1080p without a dedicated hardware device such as an appleTV.

The reason using Chrome of firefox get's around this error is because it's not using html5 and therefore restricting to 720p.

So, it is totally worth figuring out how to use Safari for netflix.

I haven't tried yet as I mostly use AppleTV - but maybe I'll have a look - by that time I'm sure one of you will have figured it out anyway!

I'm having the same problem. The only thing that works for me is refreshing the page. I think that it's got something to do with the new Yosemite and Silverlight and HTML5 not running smoothly together. I've no idea how to fix this!

I am having this problem with my Macbook Air since upgrading toYosemite.  Carlos, your solution sounds great except when I follow your thread to Display preferences, Im not seeing the box you're suggesting - the option for silverlight.  All I see isScreen Shot 2015-01-02 at 8.07.34 PM.png data usage options.  Can someone who has solved this problem post a screenshot for me?  I am so frustrated!
