Whenever I open a page in Safari or Chrome an EXTRA page opens wanting me to get Mackeeper or clean my mac or opens a hotel page etc

Whenever I open a page or click on a link in Safari or Chrome, 2 pages open - the one I want and an extra one - to clean my Mac or get some game or rent a hotel room - random ads. I've tried eliminating cookies but that didn't work. Don't know how to stop this from happening.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Click here and follow the instructions, or if desired, download and run Adware Medic. The second link is a direct download; if you're unable to download it, see this page.

Thank you so much for your response and quick solution. I installed Adware Medic and ran it and the problem seems to have gone away. I just didn't have a name for it, or maybe I wouldn't have wasted so long in trying to solve the problem myself - and all the frustrations. Hope I can avoid adware in the future, obviously, and I will pass on this information to a friend who doesn't even use her computer because of all of this. She assumed she had a virus and had to buy a new computer! Anyhow, I appreciate your help. 🙂 🙂

If she has a Mac, she should know that there is no such thing as Mac malware that would require buying a new computer to get rid of it. If she actually got infected with real malware, instead of just adware, the worst case scenario would be that she would have to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch.

It would be a real shame to see someone replace a perfectly good Mac just because of some concerns about being infected with malware!

The information in your article in regard to John Galt's page on adware is superb! Unfortunately (or fortunately, since it serves as a future warning) I recognize too many of the "red flags" in your document, and wrongly assumed "Hey, I have a Mac - nothing bad can happen to me... yeah, right!" I've thought I was fairly savvy about such things, that I wouldn't be "caught" but thanks to your document, I know what my errors were - and the biggest problem is that the websites are so subtle and pertain to the items you're searching. Then when you've been caught by adware and want to avoid it, there are "ways to clean your computer"!! Fortunately, I didn't and now things are going smoothly again. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH !! I plan to share this with several people who will take it seriously! 🙂 🙂
