Q: How can I get a refund at the App Store when it isn't offered ?

Perhaps the Apple attack dogs will like this post better.

How do I get a refund for a costly app that, after requesting a refund, appears to not offer one? How does one know if an app meets one's needs unless you try it first?

This seems so obvious, and yet, I am shocked that Apple does not offer a trial or refund opportunity if even for 24-48 hours.

Is there another way to get a refund that I'm not aware of?

Apple told me to contact the developer.

Let's see what Apple said. Please cut & paste the text of Apple's reply.

Sorry if this is a double-post, but the first one didn't "stick."

When I called Apple today, they said to contact the developer. But only three weeks ago, I logged into iTunes, stated my problem, and received a refund. In fact there was a message saying that a refund would be processed. So clearly, Apple's refund policy is not as black and white as you think it is. I've proven that five times now.

My four year old said to his little brother, "I know everything." So his brother asked him, “What’s 2 plus 2.” He thought for a moment and said, “Well I don’t know that, but I know everything!"

You have to admire his humility.

This is going to be my last response to you because you continue in a never ending circle of your confusion.

There is no number to call for assistance with iTunes/Mac App Store. Issues with that part of Apple is solely handled electronically.

    iTunes Support -

    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/

    Mac App Store Support -

    http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/

Apple Care does not handle iTunes/Mac App Store issues. Which is likely why you were referred to the developer of the app, who then referred you to Apple.

The iTunes system did not automatically state to you that a refund was being processed. The agent who works for iTunes/MAS support and fielded your report of a problem responded to you with that decision and message.

Yes, that's correct, I spoke with an AppleCare rep. Yes, I received feedback that a refund would be processed.

And yes, this should be your last reply since you refuse to acknowledge that there are anomalies in Apple's refund policy. In the future David, please don't waste other people's time by trying to answer forum questions to which you do not have sufficient knowledge (after that's been adequately demonstrated).

That said, I do appreciate your efforts.

Since this is a user-to-user support forum and we can't do anything about Apple policies, you may want to provide the feedback directly to Apple. I don't see an area designated specifically for feedback re the Mac App store but you could use the MacBook or some other computer model area: https://www.apple.com/feedback/

The confusion is because Apple is seemingly not consistent with their stated refund policy. I know you are just stating the policy, but there is more to it that you obviously did not realize. Apple says they have a no-refund policy on apps, but... there are exceptions.

    1. If you call Apple iTunes support, I have found that they are ready to help you. I called them just now, and they granted a refund of two apps without question (these were American reps).

    2. The iTunes rep explained that, when you "Report a Problem" with your app, you have five choices in the menu to choose. Here's what most of us didn't know: you are allowed a courtesy return one time only for each of the stated problems. These are automatically processed, contrary to what David said, which is why I received a message immediately saying my refund was being processed. After you've used up each of those courtesies, you can no longer process refunds automatically.

    3. The safest way to buy apps if you think you might return them, sorry to say, is to go straight to the developers. They will sometimes offer trials, and often when they don't, they will still offer a refund if you are not satisfied.

I hope this helps others here who feel they have no options, as I did. If you've used up your courtesies, give iTunes support a phone call.

Finally, the answer I was looking for.

Since the Mac App Store is an app installed with OS X, I usually suggest that folks give feedback there. However, this isn't an issue with the function of the Mac App Store app, but rather an objection to Apple policy, so it's anyone's guess where to plug in feedback.

Where does one find a phone number to speak to iTunes Support?

Call AppleCare or the AppleStore. I had to use my MacBook serial number, which obviously put me through to the wrong department. But that rep took down some details, and then put me through to the "iTunes Store". I couldn't find a direct number either.

OK, there is a couple things going on there. First of all people were complaining about how hard it is to get a refund. Well, it's not. Read your emails. There is an iTunes store receipt for every item you purchase. Behind the item are two links. Write a Review and Report a Problem. Klick on the latter, and voila.

The second thing is as to why refunds are issued. No idea, seriously. I just bought the vizzywig8xHD app, and I thought it sucked (this is not a review, neither an opinion, so please do not evaluate on this).... So I requested a refund. I klicked on "Report a Problem", selected the reason, entered an explanation, and the next screen said I had been issued a refund.

In my eyes that is very easy, and fast, and transparent.

Perhaps Apple should take Android's cue, which allows users to refund absolutely any app within a day or two.

Android Apps can be returned within two hours, not one or two days.

Anyhow, glad your problem is fully solved as you have marked it.

    Cheers and happy computing

I don't know really, because refunding just everything would open the gates for people just getting an app, using it, and then getting a refund. As was said elsewhere: Developers need to eat, too....
