Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

    *********** PROBLEMS FIXED ************

I have spent the last month trying to get my iPad 2 running like it did before 8.0 and 8.1. Finally chatted with Apple support for two hours trying many things. Then I  followed their instructions to do a full factory reset, reinstalled all my apps, and recreated all of my email accounts.

Nothing, nothing, nothing worked! My iPad still runs crappy and web browsing (on any browser) was still tortuously slow and choppy.

Then I tried this..... I put the iPad on a shelf,  went out and bought a Surface Pro 3. Now my tablet is running with lightning speed with an abundance of apps, and the user interface is performing great!

    Bye Bye Apple.

I was having the same wifi issue with my iPad Air after updating to iOS 8.1.  Here's what I did to fix the issue:

    1. Backed up to both iCloud and iTunes.

    2. Erased All Content and Settings.

    3. Setup as a NEW iPad.  Did NOT setup iCloud.

    4. Tested to see if wifi was working.  It was.  Downloaded Hearthstone.  Played Hearthstone off and on for the rest of the night, never had any wifi issues. (Note: Downloading and playing Hearthstone is probably not necessary, but highly recommended.)

    5. Next day, Erased All Content and Settings.

    6. Setup by restoring from iCloud backup.

    7. Resumed playing Hearthstone, have not had any wifi issues since.

    Hope this helps!

I got rid of my Linksys EA4500 and got the ASUS RT-AC68U - AC1900. I was due an upgrade to get on the AC standard anyway so wasn't overly annoyed!

Since testing it over the weekend it seems that my Wi-Fi issues have been resolved. I haven’t had a single drop or had to toggle the Wi-Fi switch on/off to get it the connection live again. Speeds have been consistent and this is across all my devices including :

    iPhone 6 Plus

    iPad Air 2

    iPhone 5S

Macbook Pro Retina – 2012 non AC version

I hope this lasts but so far so good although I appreciate this is a deep routed iOS 8 problem that only occurs with certain router brands / chipsets.

Either way apple need to resolve this in the next update for the vast majority of us and  this certainly shouldn’t force us to upgrade our existing equipment!

Good luck to all and I’ll post back if things start to get sour again!!

I Have a Linksys 6500 and the same says model you just mentioned with no help from either device. I am reluctantly going to try renaming the 5GHz network and hide the ID for it. Maybe that will help but it's not a solution its a workaround at best.

    This is annoying.

I'm having the same issues with my home wifi network which is pretty much making my iPad Air 2 unusable for web browsing or using apps that require an internet connection (most of them). I've had to tether my iPad to my iPhone 5s and use my mobile data allowance to browse websites and use apps.

Really hope that Apple sorts this out very soon.

Apple are taking the **** with my case. Going around in circles since late September. All the 'engineers' can come back with after looking at my case for over a month is....we need all your router details ( given them these previously to another senior advisor) and they actually want me to film my mini retina on ios8.1 along side my mums identical mini retina (on iOS 7.1)  and do a start up and wifi speed test....I feel like they don't actually believe what i am saying even those I set up that wifi profile weeks ago and sent them the wifi logs which they asked for showing the 2.4/5 ghz problem. ios 8.1 allowed me to finally connect to the 5 ghz however my wifi still seems to occasionally drop out and sometimes takes a little longer to connect to the wifi . All their advice seems to be repetitive and not really of any use, I just want them to pick up my iPad and look at the problem themselves but no. I've stayed patient and calm on the phone to them for absolutely ages but I feel like I am getting completely mugged of here. has anyone managed to get s replacement or even a solution from the engineers? I feel like they are trying to kill me with boredom and repetitiveness so I quietly go away along with my problem. I haven't got trucking time to be doing this myself, surely they can come and collect it and fix it or replace it. Trucking turds.

Why does it feel like the people in this forum care more about the issues at hand than Apple themselves?i guess they have a large enough customer base to not give a s*hit about one or two people....

It is very hard for me to believe that the Apple engineers can not duplicate the problem with the WiFi in iOS 8.  Do they really have to get the user base to supply all of their troubleshooting information?  The run around pp91 is getting is ridiculous.

THIS is still the easiest way to prove if the problem still exist (easy missed in this thread page71).

To buy new routers and resetting ipads/iphones will only solve the problem temporary.

Try this using IOS 8 (any version through 8.1):

    1. Run an internet Speed Test using WiFi.  Ookla SpeedTest is fine.

    2. Now, simply open the Control Center, then close the Control Center without doing anything.

    3. Fairly quickly, re-run the Speed Test.  You'll notice about half speed, and very jerky (bursty) internet access.

    4. After closing the Control Center, this continues for about 35 to 40 seconds, then the WiFi interruption goes away.

This occurs on every device I can find (iPhone 4S, 5, 5S, 6, 6 Plus, iPad, iPad Mini).

    ******************************************************************************** *******************************************************

I myself can reproduce this and showed it to a employee at my local applestore, he suddenly could not help me, and a supervisor came to help instead (was probably listening in via their bodyguard/police lookalike earpieceintercoms).

He then said that this had to be a unique problem with my device, so I asked him to try with his own iphone or any ios8 product in the store, but was then asked to leave if I was not going to buy something?!? Way to treat your customers Apple!

Just another guy with an iPhone 5S that can't seem to keep a wifi connection to my dlink router.  Internet connection becomes intermittently dead while the wifi logo remains all happy in the top of the screen and pretends it is still connected to the network.  I've done some basic troubleshooting steps on the phone and router but don't have time to read through 1000 posts of troubleshooting that may or may not work.  Works fine on my work router.  Everything worked fine before iOS 8, and now on 8 and 8.1 the issues persist.  APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS

I agree! Its probably not the angrybirds app itself that is the problem, but the way ios8 handels memory.

Here are some screenshots from Ookla speedtest I did earlier today on my iphone 5C (in swedish, but the numbers are quite clear).

What I did (steps in my previous post bottom page 75): start test, when done, click on homebutton, pull upp controll center, hide controll center, start new test, repeat.

The same thing happens when I try doing that with the speed test then home button, control swipe up then down etc.....is there any use of me sending photos of the results to the senior advisor who is dealing with my case as opposed to sending what i have currently been asked for which is a video of my mums (ios7.1) mini retina and my ios8.1 mini retina side by side turned on and off then doing a speed test, along with all my router details? What they are asking for seems pretty pointless but I want to know if doing the mentioned method above with the speed test ( which is showing drastically increased ping times and lower download speeds) actually means there's an issue or is this something that occurs normally when doing a speed test over and over again? I'm so fed uppppppppppppppppp. apple you fucktards. I just want to show these tw*ts that there is definitely a problem so they can't keep making me do these bullsh*t things which I have not got any time for.
