Yes it's safe. I have a few minor keyboard glitches but that's about all. Make yourself a iTunes or iCloud backup first before updating. If you're not sure you'll like IOS 8.1 go to the Apple Store and spend some quality time with the updated iPads.

I haven't seen too many posts,,either here in these forums or other forums I help out on about major issues with the latest iOS 8.1 update and iPad 4s.

So, based on this, I would say your pretty safe to do the upgrade with no real appreciable hit on the performance of your iPad model.

    Good Luck!

No. It isn't safe. IOS 8 is an abortion of an upgrade. If you are lucky, you'll get a few more features and hopefully not much will break, unlike what many, many other users have found - just look at the internet for tales of Bluetooth, WiFi, cellular failures, freezes, crashes, or like mine, will not reboot and so (at least for now) is useless - all because of the upgrade. I despise Apple for the continuing huge failing in their quality control and hope someone starts a class action against them.

Do you have a iPad 4 ? If you had problems what dd you do to fix them ? Did you send feedback to Apple ? What's stopping you from filing a class action if you hink it's the appropriate method to improve your iPad's performance ?  And please don't tell me it's not safe when I'm using it right now.

I'll tell you it's not safe because it isn't. It isn't safe running across a busy road without looking: doesn't mean lots of people don't get away with it! A quick look on the internet will indicate just how many people have had problems with this - lots. A class action wouldn't improve my iPad's performance, but it would perhaps focus Apple's development team on substance rather than style. I will send feedback to Apple, I'm currently having to restore it from scratch via iTunes. If I was away from home with this, which I often am, then the option wouldn't have been available.

Many thanks! I'm quite new in Apple community and I have to figure it out how to make an iTunes backup but I'll manage It's not about liking, it's just about keeping the iPad working and useful seeing lots of different problems with 8.0.1 around here.

You're welcome. I made sure I had a iCloud backup and for me it was gold. During the update I got the dreaded connect to iTunes symbol. I don't have a computer so I went over to the Apple Store where they restored my iPad from my iCloud backup. I not only got all my info back I regained 6 GB of much needed memory.

I just made a little bit of research on backups and I saw the iCloud backup is easier and more simple to do than iTunes, which requires other computer. By the way, I suppose the other computer needs iOS as well, right?

And checking the settings, I realized my iCloud backup was turned ON. Thanks again!

You shouldn't be using iOS 8.0.1 ... as this was pulled by Apple in an hour or so from being released!

You''re welcome. Yes, if you have trouble the other computer downloads a copy of IOS 8.1, installs it, then you're asked if you want to restore your iPad from a iTunes or iCloud backup. It was quite a learning experience watching my iPad go from Recovery mode to restore from iCloud to a smooth running iPad again.

I'm on an iPad 4 and didn't have to do anything special during these several updates. It worked great for me.

With your knowledge of backups and restores I think your iPad is afraid to do anything wrong.
