Other data on your device should only be about 1.5GB and larger than this may indicate corrupt data.

To get rid of it you need to restore not from a backup.

Sep 19, 2013 10:50 PM in response to Nebo95by Frank Malloy,Probably, this is due to "orphaned" Messages app attachments. When you deleted Messages in a certain 6.0.x release, it didn't delete the attached photos/videos, and left them in limbo and undeletable. They fixed the bug, but those orphaned attachments hang around in your backup data - forever. You cannot delete them from Messages because the attachments are no longer associated with a message. So, your Message list can be zero but still have these attachments which take up space. When you restore from your backup - these attachments get restored to your phone.
Check this: Settings > General > Usage (wait for the STORAGE part to update) and look under Messages. Is it huge?
The only way is to restore without backup as mentioned, or use a third-party application which lets you go in and delete these from your backup file on your computer, then you can restore the backup without the bad attachments. I don't have experience with these backup editors, so you'd need to have some else help here.
Good luck.
