Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

It's not the best fix. We've all done it and it still doesn't work. Same WiFi issues.

Glad you got yours sorted it out.

Brian, thanks but we've all checked for firmware updates to our routers. They either don't have an update or an update has been applied and the issues remain.

    I say this with no disrespect to the people who posted these suggestions, because I hope that everyone in here just want to help out, but;

All posts about buying new routers, upgrading firmware and factory resets / hard resets of iPhones/iPads beeing the solution to the problem, are all just missleading! I wish these people would read the entire thread, then they would actually see that as someone stated above "all fixes are BS".

There is now doubt that iOS8x introduced some sort of bug that affected WiFi and other functions. And that means its a bug that has to be fixed.

So we just have to wait for apple to take care of it, and when they do (and you are one of the people who bought at new router to fix the problem), you will probably have two fully functional routers and a little less money.

The post I would like to see now, is from someone who has installed the new iOS8.1.1 DeveloperBetaVersion released monday, and hear what they can report back about the WiFi problem. Any takers?

    Hi Everybody.

I am facing a problem that seems to be the same as yours.

After installing the IOS 8.1 the WiFi started behaving badly. When I ping directly the access point, the response time is always over 72ms while it should be 1ms or 2ms and sometimes does not respond.

I tried pinging the same AP from other devices (including my IPhone 5) within the same network and they perform much better with times of 1ms and 2ms.

I tried everything, resetting network settings, etc but nothing works.

This is causing me big troubles specially when I try to use streaming apps like Youtube, TuneIn, etc.

I think that Apple should solve this urgently.

    Every tip can help.

    Thanks

These are all on the 5Ghz network and working at full speed.

Whilst I'm pleased to hear anyone thinks they have managed to find a fix, be it temporary or permanent, I don't think the thought of everyone on this forum with the same issues, going out and spending £150+ on a new Router for a problem introduced by Apple's iOS is ver going to be any kind of solution, maybe by some quirk that particular router doesn't have the issues the rest of us are having, and in some cases I wouldn't mind betting some that think their wifi is fixed by something they tried aren't even aware of the fact sure its working, but at a much weaker strength so not as it was on iOS7, but either way the fact remains, we a huge volume of us have been given as iOS which has effectively broken or at best only crippled our wifi, and most have already endured what seems like an eternity of no signal, weak signal, signal drops, disconnects etc, and so I'm afraid no matter what random posts I see pop up with alleged fixes, I know the ONLY working answer will be a fix from apple.

For me the random posts from people who sometimes haven't bothered to read the previous posts, saying "hey guys the fix is....." just doesn't help at all, as most of us have tried all these various suggestions a long time ago and are still stuck in the same situation.

Personally I'd love to see a post from any developer who's trying out the iOS8.1.1 with their findings on the wifi to at least give us a glimmer of hope that somethings being done, I have read that the developers have been asked by apple to focus on wifi for this update so at least if true, shows they know there's issues and ant to get them fixed.

So tired of sitting in the living room on the same sofa with my missus logging out of wifi constantly on my 5S unable to play a game or watch a video on iOS8 while she sits there happily with no issues at all with wifi on her 4S still on iOS7 (luckily for her I suggested she wait a bit when iOS8 came out), my macbook pro is also fine on wifi so its pretty obvious where the problem is in my humble opinion and as I said before it can only be resolved by apple bringing out an update which its right what ever they have broken.

I Must say the constant 'i have a fix' is draining me...77 pages of it. I say we should all film clips of our wifi being ****, then start a crowd fund and sue these extremely frustrating cunttards.

I totally agree. I have tried all the fixes and changes. On my 5S after I updated it was ruined on my iPad after is updated it was ruined I was not going to update any more with the iPhone 6 I had no choice. It was already on iOS 8 which is now ruined. I wish they wouldjust acknowledge there is a problem TeleSales trying to fix it so that we would not have to keep thinking are they can forget about last night they did with 8.1just using the forums on an iOS device is a nightmare I have to use Siri to dictate as typing does not work properly

I Have pretty much given up with the case i have had open with apple for a month and a half, they ask for such stupid things. I don't get paid to troubleshoot so why the trucking truck should i do the 'engineers' work for them. Amongst many of the stupid things ive been told i liked this one - when asked how many devices are connected to my router i said up to 6 ( two ipads an iphone a laptop and two moto gs) but usually only 4 at one time...apparently my problem could be i have too many devices connected, clearly they are right and i should stop using that many devices on my router as i have been doing for years ...such comedians!

Just tested with the 8.1.1 update, and I can say that it does seem to fix the Control Center slide up/down issue, and WiFi seems quite a bit more stable.  Can't say that it's perfect (still has a WiFi issue that has been plaguing iPhones since IOS 5), but it is significantly improved.

The existing problems are all internal to the existing IOS implementation, but Apple is indeed working on them.  This means that none of the 'fixes' listed on this board are going to do a whole lot for you.  Apple's not perfect, of course, but they actually do fix their problems.  As a developer for both IOS and Android, I can absolutely state that Apple is far better at addressing bugs than 'the other guys'.  We have filed bugs with Android back in 2010 that are still not fixed today (specifically, audio latency problems and severe WiFi issues).
