Q: Losing network or internet connection after sleep/wake

I've created this as a new thread as it seems to be more prevalent with Mavericks and the very last update to ML but the problem has been around a while. It does seem to affect all types of Mac though from the other threads I have read and posted to.

The problem is essentially this: Intermittently, after a system sleep, the Mac appears to have no network connectivity (local and internet) and for a while the only reliable solution was to force the renewal of the DHCP lease or turning WiFi off and on again, after which the network would be restored.

There have been several theories postulated and a number of fixes, such as the DHCP renew, suggested but none of them have lasted for long but I now think I have this fixed as the following been 100% stable on my Mac Pro with wired ethernet connection for the last two weeks with no recurrences. I see no reason why this would not work on other Macs or connection types.

The problem seems to lie in the automatic location setting in the network settings, so here's what I did...

  1. Network settings - Location - Edit Locations
  2. Add a new location .. "Home" for example
  3. With home selected, click the cogwheel below the network services and choose "Set Service Order"
  4. Reorder the services so your preferred connection type is at the top
  5. After that, select each service in turn (assuming you have a few - like Bluetooth PAN etc)
  6. Make the services you are not using inactive
  7. Apply

Please post a reply if this works for you - it's been dragging on far too long and needs sorting out by Apple but if this is a good workaround for people then it will certainly do for now.

For the record, my problem still exists. Deleting the Network Preferences config files did not help at all, I am fully up to date on 10.9.4 and the problem exists in Safe Mode as well... Beyond baffled that this has not been addressed properly.

While I have not solved the problem, which would seem to be specific to the Airport/Mavericks interaction, I did find a work around.  In System Preferences/ Energy Saver, I checked the box the prevents the MacBook Pro from sleeping automatically when the display is off, the box that says Wake for Wi-Fi network access, and the box that says Enable Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter.  While I am in the office using the Airport, the laptop is always plugged into the power adapter, so this is not a problem.  And since I made this change last week Thursday (8/27/14), the MacBook is no longer losing its connection to the network.  I have been able to close it, take it home, then bring it back the next day, and the Airport network connection is immediately, and so far reliably, re-established.

All, after taking the iMac to another network it appears that this is indeed an Airport/Mavericks interaction issue. I replaced my airport with a Linksys router, and have never once lost the connection since. As I previously stated, I have several other older MACs/iPhone/iPads in the house which have never had a problem with connections.

Great job Apple, your new OS forced me to switch router brands and never recommend Airports to anyone again.

poppincurbs, I have tried everything listed on this discussion as well as elsewhere, and everything works for a couple of weeks, and then we are back to clicking on the wifi icon, turning it off then turning it on.  I had hoped the new Yosemite would have fixed Apple's wifi problem, but I have read that Yosemite has the same issues.

Before I discard my Airport Extreme, I am hoping you will post back in a month or so to see if getting a different router continues to work.  I find it hard to think that the router is the problem, since no other computer or cell phone on my wifi network drops connection.  Only the iMac, and only after I updated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks.  iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S5, and an hp laptop as well as my older iMac running Snow Leopard never, ever drop connection.  Only the iMac running Mavericks does this.

So very annoying that Apple has been unable to solve this problem, after all this time.

Greetings! Welcome to the Apple world.

My MacPro has lost its IP address after wakeup from sleep since Yosemite was installed. This only appears to happen when connected to my Airport Express network. Fortunately, or prudently, i run two wifi networks. The other network using my service providers wifi modem, seems to start just fine (only 5 wakes so far mind you). My other apple devices (iPhone 5 and iPad air, and series 2 iPad) are just fine with my AE modem. XP and W7 machines will also connect and wake just fine with the Apple AE modem(s).

The user community has seen this before. Apple really should be addressing this issue. It has been around, as a result of previous updates in OS, for years now it appears.

With those of you with 2 or more wireless networks, try changing your other (non-apple) wireless networks to channel 1 or 11, change the network name, and change the password.   My ISP told me to do this on my ARRIS device specifically because I had mac products.  It was a pain in the butt, but so far so good.  Tonight is the real challenge.

I have the same problem recently after I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. After many flustrating search for reasons/solutions, I bumped into this thread and applied your solution. It worked! Thanks, and what a relief.

I agreed that this is just a work around. Apple should acknowledge this problem and provide a formal explanation and solution for it.

My more talented resources have advised that this is a widespread issue. See:

    http://www.macrumors.com/2014/11/03/first-yosemite-10-10-1-beta-now-available/

in other words, as we say in Canada, Apple screwed up...

In my world...I've been running off my service providers modem, airport express excluded, and two days with wake ups without grief.

Between your response and poppincurbs, I think I will invest in a different router and give that a try.  It's just that every "fix" posted seems to work (some worked for weeks!), and then the problem mysteriously reappears.  I would hate to purchase another router only to find out in a few weeks that I'm back to square one (and I have been working on this problem for over a year).    I hope a new, non-Apple router is the answer.

For what is worth, my router is a TP Link and this was driving me crazy until I used the solution outlined in the first post. (MBP mid 2012 running 10.9.5).

I still get some disconnects from time to time, but the missing wifi after waking up is gone.

I have followed Reforger's suggestion, but it was certainly temporary.  We had maybe two good weeks, then the drop-outs started again.  Thank you for posting--you may have saved me from purchasing another router.  I also had high hopes when Yosemite came out, but apparently that OS has wifi drop-outs as well.  Wish I could go back to Mountain Lion.

    Evening!

I thought i had posted an update, but i don't see it...anyway, operating off my service provider modem was not consistent (while still operating my Airport Express modems - for the iOS gear in the house...). However, it was an easy fix to use my phone or pad to reset the AE (Airport Express) modems using airport utility. Took 3 minutes i suppose.

As you may be aware, Apple provided an update a couple days ago for Yosemite. This update, so the info indicated, was to specifically address the wifi faults. I updated and have been using the AE modems since with about half a dozen "sleeps" and "wakes". No problems so far.

I doubt Apple will be updating old OS versions - so you may not see improvement - ever, until you update to Yosemite...

What you posted made sense--why am I still fussing with Mavericks, when there is a new operating system to try?  So I upgraded to Yosemite, and there have been no drop-outs since the upgrade last night (and I had to click on and off my wifi icon repeatedly towards the end of my time with Mavericks).  So that's a good thing.

We are getting a lot of spinning beachballs, however, with a lot of things we click on, and I've had to force quit Safari, Pages, Adobe Reader many times in the short time I've had Yosemite.  Sheesh, I hope they work these bugs out!  At least I'm not having wifi dropouts, but so far with all the spinning beachballs we are not impressed with this upgrade.
