Q: Bootcamp not working after Yosemite update

Hi,

I have similar problem after updating to Yosemite, now  I can't boot into windows. There is no Windows option at startup when holding on ALT button and in disk utility, it showed Mac OS X partition with disks greyed out. I updated to Yosemite on my 11 inch Mac air and Mac Pro with no problem, before I decided to update my sons iMac (which has his school work) and ran into this problem. I remembered I use a third party program called Paragon NTFS. Could this be the problem?

Please Help.

Yosemite expects you to have your own TM backups. If the partition was greater than 226GB, one option is to have OS X end a byte before the start from Testdisk which will become GPT#2 and GPT#3 will become Windows from the Testdisk start till the end of the disk.

I Think we should go that route, GPT#2 as OS X , and GPT#3 from Testdisk start till end of disk.

    Loner T,

    I have delete GPT#4, GPT#3 and GPT#2.

I might of create GPT#2 with start address 409600 instead of 409640. Is this why it is showing in Partition table scan as MBR: protection?

    1. All Mac disks are GPT with a Protective MBR.

    2. You want to leave GPT#1 as is without any changes.

    3. Start GPT#2 at the same start as it currently is (409640). The End should be one byte less than where Testdisk start is for Windows.

    4. Create a new GPT#3 with the start from Testdisk, end should be at 1953523711.

    5. Verify readability of Bootcamp volume and availability of files after Reboot.

    6. Verify that you can see NTFS header with the new GPT#3.

    7. If Step 6 is successful, create a new Hybrid MBR with GPT#3 as bootable.

    8. Switch to Windows and check if you need Startup Repair or not. If OS X does not boot in this configuration, use the external boot disk to boot and test Windows.

    see screen shot,

There seems to be a space between GPT#2 and GPT#3 and no NTFS header.

In the logs that you posted, the following messages indicate that some partition headers were created but were incorrect. More than likely, Yosemite did these calculations and they were incorrect. The only consistent factor is 559GB/1093476352 as you mentioned.

         Mac HFS                905665415 2139609992 1233944578

         HFS blocksize=16777216, 631 GB / 588 GiB

This partition ends after the disk limits. (start=905665415, size=1233944578, end=2139609992, disk end=1953525168)

        Mac HFS               1161907512 2138664807  976757296

         HFS+ blocksize=4096, 500 GB / 465 GiB

This partition ends after the disk limits. (start=1161907512, size=976757296, end=2138664807, disk end=1953525168)

    NTFS: Can't read MFT

         MS Data               1953523711 3047000062 1093476352

         NTFS, blocksize=4096, 559 GB / 521 GiB

This partition ends after the disk limits. (start=1953523711, size=1093476352, end=3047000062, disk end=1953525168)

The only changes are to GPT start/end, and they can be reversed. Testdisk found 781864960/1257201663/475336704 . You can change the GPT#2 end position. Gdisk uses absolute numbers as start/end, but has to be given +/- number for size. If Testdisk showed familiar files that is where a NTFS header exists.

One option is to run Testdisk again and look/confirm NTFS headers, but it will be a slow and long process.

Thats the only option right now. So now do I instruct Testdisk to look for the NTFS header? Same as before , analysis the disk? Please advice.

You will need to start Testdisk and start a Deeper Scan.

Hi, once the deeper scan  is finish in Testdisk, how or what am I looking for to find the NTFS header?

Deeper Scan should produce a list of partitions. The ones which are of type MS Data is what you are interested in. Partitions of 2880 or 6140, etc, are not very useful. Partitions which are roughly 559GB are of interest. You can estimate the size by taking the Testdisk size number and dividing it by 2 x 1024 x 1024 or 2 ** 21 to get rough size in GB.

And also this, which is the GPT 4 we defined earlier using GDISK

This entry looks like the original GPT 4

    >D MS Data                860047360 1953523711 1093476352

The candidate that was used was start/end/size of 781864960/1257201663/475336704, but the following is very different and 1165742080 is roughly 555GB/582GiB. Can you look for files in the following entry for Windows files? The one that is current GPT 3 can be changed. A bit confused that this did not show up in earlier Testdisk scans. The 781864960 is after 787781632, so it is possible for it show files which look familiar. Typically an entry like "System Volume Information" and other files together are the best clues to validity of the partitions.

My suggestion is to look for files in the following part to make sure this the right one.
