Q: Yosemite (OS X 10.10) killed my WiFi :(

I just updated to Yosemite on a brand new 15" MBP Retina Display. For some reason my WiFi is not working. I turn it on and select the network I want to join (my regular network at home that I've been using with this same computer before updating). So, I turn it on and select the network and doesn't seem to want to join it and then my WiFi switches back off completely.

Is anyone else having problems with their WiFi on Yosemite?

    Hey Don,

I originally posted the issue with Yosemite on channel 149 and above on any Wi-Fi router/gateway which uses 802.11ac as the connection protocol.

My original post is here:Re: Mac OS 10.10 Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Upper channel 149-165 issues

And setting it to the lower channels on the 5GHz will provide you the stable connection, but will be lowering your Wi-Fi throughput bandwidth.

Whilst the bandwidth for 'internet' browsing shouldn't be very much noticeable, it is noticeable if you are doing large file transfers in your own home network or are a designer/video editor, who works with large files and have to transfer between your NAS and Mac.

This is where you would want to have the connection on the higher 5GHz channels.

Also higher 5GHz channels provide more Wi-Fi power on those channels, and by doing that can reach further into your home/office.

I hope that Apple will get this issue resolved.  As the customer experience on this has gone down quite a lot.

    Hi Amano8u,

Thanks for discovering the connection issues being related to the high channels.  Since going to a lower channel my 5 GHz connection has become vary stable--over 24 hourss.

As you pointed out, I was aware the higher channels gave better throughput.  This is why I wanted to go wireless AC to improve device-to-device connection speed for my home observatory as I transfer very large image files from my telescope camera.  It is too bad that Apple did not test Yosemite on higher channels.  When I talked with customer support yesterday they told me it was the fault of my router.

I am having related issues.   I attempted to install Yosemite on my Mac Book Pro three times over WiFi, but the download crashed on all 3 occasions.  However, when I now try to use WiFi on my MacBook using Mavericks, it keeps dropping, which it has never done before.  Worse, WiFi now keeps dropping on my iMac, which is still using Mavericks.  The only thing that seems to work is to turn off WiFi and Blue tooth on my MacBook altogether, and then my iMac and WiFi goes back to normal.  It's really weird, to put it mildly.

I am not tech savvy, and have been a vey long term user of Apple so that I don't have to go in and make what for me are risky changes or workarounds to the operating system.  It's reliability and the simplicity and invisibility of it's interface has always been the magic of Apple for me.  So just adding my voice here in the hope that the more of us that do, the quicker Apple will fix this, with a simple Yosemite upgrade

Update on my post from Oct 25 about my wifi problems after installing Yosemite on my mbp...

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.  I tried monitoring the frequency usage, but couldn't detect a pattern.  Wifi could drop off on any band.  So...

Yesterday I signed up for the Apple "Beta" program, and I downloaded and installed 10.10.1.  It's been just three hours of wifi usage since then, but it seems to be a big improvement.  1.5 hours of usage yesterday had no fall-outs in my wifi connection at the local Starbucks.  Today, I just had two fall-outs.  Not perfect, but a big improvement.  It looks like I won't have to re-install Mavericks after all.

I ran into a friend today who had also installed 10.10.1 on his mbp. He said it was working pretty good.  Being an IT guy, he could give me background on the problem.  He says he never installs the ".0" version of any mac OS because of wifi problems.  Apparently, he's run into this problem before.

    FWIW. HTH.

Tried all that... reverted back to Maverick until there is a proper fix from Apple

My issues we're only on a WPA2 Enterprise network.

Beta OS didn't fix; none of the proposed fixes in this thread worked.

What finally worked for me was the following:

    Refresh discoveryd service

Another thing you could try is refreshing the discoveryd service:

    • Open Terminal from Spotlight or Launchpad.
    • Enter this command, press enter and enter your password: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist
    • Now run this command to start the service again: sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

I don't want to go back, But, I downloaded Yosemite when it first became available in the Mac App Store. How come when viewing app purchases, is Yosemite available for download and not showing as downloaded? am I running a Bata Version?

Than you for the heads-up. I am disappointed to hear that the WPA2 enterprise issue, which is the only one that I am personally experiencing, is not addressed by the Beta. Do you have to refresh every time you start your OS or is this a one-time deal?

I Am writing this from my IPad.  I installed Yosemite on my 2011 MacBook Pro this weekend. And now I cannot get on the Internet.

I thought it was my internet service.  I had to turn off and on my wifI. Then it would die after a few seconds.

Apple has become the new Windows.

I guess I should not complain, It was a free upgrade.  You get what you pay for.

Since I updated to Yosemite I have the bluetooth - wifi problem, too.
    Mbpr "15 mid 2012.
When bluetooth is on the wifi goes down. So my wireless keyboard is useless....
Tried everything...(smc,preference files, pram, wifi settings). Nothing worked for me.
Apple what´s wrong with you?! When I bought my very expensiev machine I had some trouble with my Screen. Now with wifi???
Wait for the official update or install the beta?
I really don´t want to downgrade...

Thank you! I think this worked! However, the symbol in the bar looks a bit different to before (Like a grey WiFi symbol with a X through it). And it feels a bit slower as before. But at least it's not dropping the connection all the time. So, thanks for the fix!

Have to revert on that - connectivity is lost after a couple of minutes again. This is ridiculous. Almost a month now, correct?

Well you guys can add my name to this list! I have a rMBP from 2012 but have a little bit of an exotic setup, I purchased the BCM94360CSX for it to achieve 802.11 AC connectivity and have been less than impressed. Currently all the upper channels are very unstable, meaning if I walk 10 feet away (but maintain line of sight) the throughput drops to 878 (mBits) using the option click method. I've also noticed that the latency and overall throughput is 1/10 of what it should be (seeing 10 m/bits down vs wired connection of 120 m/bits down). Im hoping that the 10.10.1 update will help stabilize the throughput, im guessing that the OS's wifi power management is being too aggressive and prematurely reducing power.
