Q: ROOTIN' TOOTIN' YOSEMITE MAC MINI 2011

Yosemite has darn near enough killed off the speed of my Mac Mini 2011 which was running along fine on Mavericks. I now get the spinning PIZZA WHEEL OF DEATH in darn near every application. Safari has become a joke where you would think I had returned to 56k modem land. I would like toknow if Apple geniuses are going to do something about this? I would not have downloaded and instaled Yosemite if I had not been encouraged to do so by Apple's Tech Specs on this page http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/how-to-upgrade/?cid=wwa-uk-kwg-mac-com, which states quite clearly Yosemite will work on:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminium, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

Any solutions?

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify the more obvious suspects.

I tried that etre check application but it isn't really helping me understand the problem - the problem I think is just that yoseimte is for souped up macs of the past 2 years. I am annoyed as my mac has been very fast up until yosemite. I don't use time machine as I prefer just doing manual backups for my mac. Ideally I would like to go back to mavericks as it seemed stable enough. Do you think that an update will come for yosemite addressing speed problems? What ahould I be looking for in the Etrecheck results?

    Thanks

    Hello appleonius,

First I would like to start off by asking you how many "Gb" (GigaBytes) of ram does your Mac mini have installed in it? This is often found once you click the Apple Logo in the top left corner of your screen- then click the "About This Mac" button and it should say Memory. On the requirements page it says you need a minimum of 2 Gb to run the Operating System 10.10 (Yosemite) and judging upon what you said a "2011 mac mini" witch still has  intel core "I" series processors in it I'm almost certain that it would be a shortness of Memory (RAM).

Yes I only have 2GB in my Mac mini. I didn't think this would make it run slower.

How have you found Yosemite? Do you have more than 2gb?

At startup after signing in, I clicked my sual 2 apps and it took 5 minutes for safari and mail to actually open up. This is abysmal to say the least. I hardly notice that many changes in Yosemite. Mostly Bling stuff. I would rather have kept the speediness of Mavericks.

I looked at downgrading back to Mavericks but it looks slightly difficult. Do you know much about how to do that?

    Thanks for reply.

Although 2 GB is the "minimum," I do not think that OS X 10.10 would perform well with that memory level. I cannot replicate your configuration as I am running Yosemite on a MacBook pro with 8 GB of memory and an SSD drive. Needless to say, it is very fast.

As an initial step, I think I would consider adding memory.

You could "downgrade" by restoring from a clone backup...

Do you mean using Time Machine? I have all my files and applications backed up to an external hard drive. So if I really wanted to start again with a clean install of Mavericks, would that be possible? Then I could just re-add all my stuff again and applications? It seems it would be quite annoying to do but I would rather not start getting memory put into mac when it worked fine before Yosemite. Idea Yosemite is free OS is negated if I need to spend cash on RAM. Do you think it is possible to reinstall Mavericks? Is Mavericks still kicking around as a download?

Thanks, this is very helpful to me

    Regards

I do have a a macbook with 2 gb of ram in it running Yosemite, i also have a iMac with 8 gb of ram running Yosemite, and i notice a great difference with application launch times and overall system performance. - both computers have core2duo processors in them, and trust me when you upgrade the ram the computer will be much, much better.

One simple thing seems to speed it up a bit - turn off transparency.

System Prefs > Accessibility > tick the box for Reduce transparency.

Helped me, though still slower than before and I have 4Gb Ram.

Other issues too numerous to mention.

I just decided to go for a clean install. I backed up all my stuff which i mostly keep in one folder including original .dmg files for applications etc. I always back up my iTunes folder from Music. I always make sure to back up the Mail and Safari folders from the GO Menu System Library Folder (have to hold down ALT to unhide the Library Folder these days). These two folders are important to keep a back up of as they contain all your emails and safari favourites. I decided to just start again and pressed CMD and R at restart to bring up the back up utility partition on the mac mini. I opened Disk Utility and erased the Larger partition of Disk (about 495GB of a 500GB HD). I erased and partitioned it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I left the Smaller Partition (About 3 GB) listed separately underneath, as this takes the place of being able to use a CD/DVD to boot up mac. After erasing and partitioning, I quit the disk utility and then was presented with (yes) reinstalling Yosemite Sam (No choices here to install an older system). I think we should be given options at this stage, to install whatever system we think is best for our computers. I have been using macs for about 20 years and I know I'd rather stick with an older system that has no faults even if it's not bang up to date. I made a mistake I think installing Yosemite so as someone who has invested a bit of money with apple over the years it would be nice if apple considered making downgrading easier for users who have made mistake of trying to soup up an older system with a new OS. It would save a lot of messing about for instance if I had been able to just download Mavericks tonight. As it is I don't think I want to take the risk of trying to make a boot USB stick which may or may not work - seems a bit risky trying to cobble together a boot disk for myself, when apple could provide any of the past few operating systems at the point of doing a clean install. Anyway so I reinstalled Yosemite Sam and when it loaded I was presented with a new clean install. I took my back up Mail and Safari Folders and replaced them into the Library Folder in Go System Menu. Mail and Safari are Fine. I will need to now add all music back to iTunes, then reinstall applications. I will only reinstall the applications I use. There were a lot of applications dating back a good few years which I don't need to install as I don't use. The computer seems to be working a bit faster tonight after the Clean install so maybe getting rid of all the debris of many years of use has cleared away the cobwebs. I will report back over the next couple weeks and let you all know if mac mini slows down again. So far tonight seems good. Can I just ask, Is Time Machine worthwhile? I have never used that feature yet but I am wondering now whether it could be a good thing in relation to backtracking the OS?

    Thanks for your suggestions

    Regards

I have now went half way back to installing my applications and the Macmini 2011 seems to be running good on Yosemite just now. No spinning pizza wheels as yet. Like I say I am only going to install the applications i use most as perhaps going 3 years and 3 installs of OS X made the computer a jumble of scripts -  the fresh install was a good idea. Just remember those back ups - see my description above. Thanks for all your messages.

    Best Wishes

The mac did start slowing down once again after a few Apple updates. The way I finally fixed the problem was I upgraded the mac mini Ram modules from the original 2 GB to 8 GB. Now the mac runs fine with YOSEMITE, updates and all. No huge start up times etc. Ram is the answer!
