Is there anyway to do this on my own Mac? Or must I bring it to the Apple store?
Yep, you can do this yourself, and using your Mac. If you happen to have any anti-virus software running on the Mac, disable it for this process. Then make sure you have the current version of iTunes. Also complete your backup, and make sure you do up understand what will be saved and what items you will lose. If there is something you'll lose, then manually save it (namely, not by way of your backup). All this is simply preparation for doing the reset to factory default condition.
If you want to be real thorough in your process, then when you do the reset to factory default, with your iTunes program, don't restore your backup you did earlier. This will enable you to check out the operation of your iPad at the point it would have come from the factory, without any of the stuff you have in the backup and none of your apps installed. You can verify that everything is okay, at that point, before putting your stuff back on there.
Hopefully, it will be okay at that point and also okay after you restore from your backup. Let us know how it goes for each part of that process.
Here are are links for understanding the backup process and also the last link is for using your iTunes program to reset to factory default condition.

Nov 7, 2014 9:16 AM in response to Star Travelerby peterfromwarwick,Lucille and Star Traveler,
I tried all of this and it did not make a bit of difference for my iPad 2, it just wasted alot of my time. This is standard Apple advice, I think, to keep people busy doing things while Apple scramble to find a solution to the problem they caused. Lucille, I would just wait until Apple releases an IOS update that actually works properly. Supposedly their fourth attempt at fixing things (IOS 8.1.1) is being beta tested and may be released soon.

The thing about that, is ... it hasn't wasted a lot of other user's time, because it has fixed a whole lot of problems for users here, from them telling me so. The fact that you still have the problem says that you haven't zeroed in on the problem yet.
BUT ... this solution I was providing wasn't something that Apple was telling me or others (who were helping) to say or do. That was solely from our own experience and knowledge and it worked for many users. You're exhibiting a sort of conspiracy mentality when you say that, becaise these users here offering suggestions to other users here (and the ones that do work) aren't in any way connected with Apple.
FURTHERMORE, as I have made clear in many other posts, and from experience over 30+ years with computers and like devices, there has NEVER been a single major upgrade for any computer from any company at any time in the past, that hasn't had a series of revisions issued after that major upgrade. It has happened with every company ever in existence with computers, so that you can call it a "computer LAW"!
Supposedly their fourth attempt at fixing things (IOS 8.1.1) is being beta tested and may be released soon.
You're exhibiting a big MISUNDERSTANDING of what is going on here. When you look at those release notes that are provided with these revisions, they give a listing of a variety of things they are addressing. It's listed out precisely. The next one issues another list of different items. And then with this last one, they ALSO introduced some NEW FEATURES, one of which was a beta introduction.
There have been NO REPEATED ATTEMPTS, but simply a "straight line progression" of working down a list. You shouldn't be trying to tell people the WRONG STORY here ... :-) ...

Nov 7, 2014 10:15 AM in response to Star Travelerby jhickle1,Yikes Star Traveler. That is quite the recommendation. Thanks for the help but.....not sure I'm clear on all of it. By the way, yes, I did put a request in to Apple and have yet to hear anything. I shouldn't have to spend hours trying to fix this. I can tell you're a huge fan of Apple but not all of us want to spend all day dealing with this. Thanks again for the help. I'll take day off of work and see if I can get through all of it.

Nov 7, 2014 10:20 AM in response to Star Travelerby jhickle1,I updated to IOS 8.1 and thought my ipad was dead. My husband came to me and said the start up screen was frozen for 15 minutes and wouldn't turn on. I waited another 10 min while I was searching what to do on my computer. It finally came on. I told my husband....don't ever turn it off again. 8.1 is not a fix. It made it worse. I personally this Apple needs to put out a warranty on this upgrade and allow people to come in to their store to fix it. Everyone I talk to that has Apple devices either upgraded and regreted it or didn't do the upgrade because of everything they heard.

Nov 7, 2014 10:22 AM in response to peterfromwarwickby jhickle1,Thanks for filling me in. I was going to give it a try but now not. You're right, we shouldn't have to be wasting our time. Apple should be coming out with a fix (upgrade or else instructions) and not have all of us try to figure it out.

Nov 7, 2014 10:23 AM in response to peterfromwarwickby jhickle1,Peterfromwarik....you've been the most helpful person on here. Thanks. I feel like I'm reading a foreign language when I read Star Travelers posts. Guess it's just me.......

Nov 7, 2014 10:28 AM in response to jhickle1by Star Traveler,If you want to find out if "it's just you" that has that perception --OR-- if it's other users on this forum who have that same idea about "who is helpful" ... there is an "objective standard" for making that determination.
Just check his points versus my points ... as those points are awarded by the "users" on this forum who have found answers and solutions that were "useful" and "helpful".
THAT is an answer that comes "not" from you, "not" from the other user you refer to and "not" from me. It comes from the larger group of users on this forum!

You may have 30 years of computer experience, but I have 45 and what the additional 15 years has taught me is that your last post (in technical terms) is ********.
To the other users, let Apple fix the problem they created. They may get it right at some point.

Nov 7, 2014 12:13 PM in response to eija97by mudbath,IIf you own an ipad2, which are no longer supported by Apple, then no tinkering with factory resets will make any difference.
apple are fully aware their 8.pooh was not tested properly and for the ipad2, apple are not going to do anything since they don't support the ipad2. True you might be able to buy a rehashed ipad2 from somewhere
ps I am so bowled over by the years of computer experience some of our posters have. It does warm the cockles of my heart

You're misinformed if you think Apple no longer supports the iPad 2 model. Apple is selling the iPad 2 model - TODAY - on their online store website, where the buyer can get an AppleCare contract, which would mean Apple will SUPPORT that iPad 2 for another TWO YEARS!
That means that Apple is going to support the iPad 2 model for at least two more years.

Nov 7, 2014 3:45 PM in response to Star Travelerby k9kottage,There are obviously many here in this discussion that know a lot more about this issue than me, but your arguing back and forth about who has more experience and knowledge is not helping. I have an iPad that was working perfectly with ios7. Fast, responsive, smooth, seamless. It was fun to use. With ios8, it's like a switch was flipped. Immediately after the update it became slow, unresponsive, glitchy and just plain no more fun. Some have said to get help directly from Apple. I don't know how to get a response from them on this issue. Some have said a complete cleaning and reinstall of the ios should help. Others have said this won't help. So the question continues, can an ipad that has been badly affected with the ios8 update be fixed so that it works as well as before? Why doesn't Apple respond to this, it has to be a very widespread problem. Thanks for any constructive advice.
