Q: iTunes asking for backup password???

I am upgrading my iphone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

I'm having the same problem, downloaded Elcomsoft Phone Password Breaker and their message: password NOT FOUND after two free attempts.

    How do you explain that?

I'm having the same problem too - I know what my password is, and it will not recognize it.  Have tried several solutions - entering "password," entering the password to unlock my computer, entering the correct password several times.  No luck.

OK, apparently the 37th time's the charm... finally got in by typing the same password yet again.

Forget trying endless passwords & wierd fix ideas and just do this:

    1. Disconect your USB cable from the computer to your iDevice
    2. Sign out of your iTunes account in your computer
    3. Connect your USB again back to your computer
    4. Sign in again with your I tunes password
    5. Exit iTunes
    6. Open Safari / Preferences / Privacy and clear the apple.com cookie
    7. Restart iTunes and connect your iDevice
    8. In iTunes click on Devices (choose yours) / Summary Tab / Backups section / then click "Restore Backup" and choose the correctly dated backup
    9. If checked, UNCHECK the encryption box and enter your AppleID password at the prompt
    10. If the encryption box isn’t checked, check it and create a new password (just use your AppleID password for consistency), then uncheck that same box (which will prompt you for your newly entered password)
    11. Finally click "Restore Backup" and choose the correctly dated backup

i have got a new iPhone 5 as a replacement for my old one.

before resetting my old one i had created a back-up without password.

iTunes asked me for back-up password when restoring the back-up on the new iPhone 5.

i tried applying above procedure on the new iPhone but did not work.

then i tried to restore my old iPhone with above procedure and it worked using my Apple ID password.

will now make a back-up with password :-) and copy it to the new one.

If you have a PC where you change your login password on a regular basis (as all good security minded people should) it will be one of your previous PC logins.

    Simple

I could fix it by typing the password for my email account that I use as Apple ID (The Apple ID password and my email account password are different)

I hope this will also help you all

    Good Luck

I have tried every password, every passcode, the software doesn't work on a mac just a PC. There have been so many problems with my iphone and now this. I have probably bought 100 apple products over the years, maybe $40,000 -- they are doing crap work these days.

Ok this for all of you guys who have no idea what password you set up.

First i will provide a photo of the main screen you should be looking at.

    itunes back up.jpg

    1. When you first plug your phone in you will have your back up window come up with different options.

    2. In the Back up window under (automatically back up) make sure (this computer) option is ticked

3.Just below it there is an option to tick (Encrypt iphone back up) tick this option.

    4. A window will pop up asking you to set a new password.

    5. Set up Password and click (set password) to confirm. IMMEDIATELY CLICK CANCEL STRAIGHT AFTER. what this does is overides whatever password you had before but stops the phone from syncing new data.

6.Now you can click on restore back up and when it ask for that stupid password just type in the one you set up in step 5.

    Hope this helps
