Oct 29, 2014 6:20 AMby substance44,I have some new developments on this issue. Apparently if i turn on "reduce transparency" in Accessibility it gets better. If i have one or two windows open it's pretty fluid but if i have more than 3 open windows it gets choppy again. Funny thing is if i press exposé with Safari or Mail "selected" it's choppiness ****, even with very few running open apps on screen.
Any ideas?

I experience this choppy animations with exposé since I updated to Lion (2010 core i7 iMac with 16GByte RAM).
I followed all the "solutions" out there (like running the grafics test of xBench, resetting PRAM, NVRAM, clean install, repairing file permissions...) but without much success.
With every new release of OS X I cross my fingers and hope this behaviour gets better, but it doesn't.
At first I thought it is caused by memory expensive apps like Photoshop with big files opened, but that's also not the case. Yosemite runs smooth even with Photoshop running. But as soon as Mail and/or Safari are running as well, exposé gets choppy and it really ****** me off.
Reducing the transparancy works for me, everything is smooth with this option selected. But I haven't tried with many Windows open. Will do that later on.
But still: A quadcore machine with 16GBytes of RAM and an SSD should not be slowed down in that way by a browser using some transparency effects.
I'm not giving up though and if I've got a working solution I will let you know.

Nov 1, 2014 3:05 AMby Volkward,Okay, I just found out that the choppy animations with exposé are completely gone when disconnecting my external display. Even with transparency effects ON, all animations are totally smooth when using the iMac internal display only.
My disappointment regarding this issue is growing more and more, since I am using an original Apple Cinema Display as external monitor. And therefore it should "just work". Am I right, Apple?
I already read something about a buggy WindowServer process which might be the problem here, but no solution in sight. But I'm still not giving up.

On this side everything was fine until i updated to Yosemite. I just tested opening many finder windows, transmission and vlc. Everything ok, it just sometimes slips a frame with all these but it's pretty fluid. As soon as i open apps like Safari, Mail or Sunrise the choppiness frenzy starts. I'm aware of the buggy WindowServer process and been following that thread. Tried the fix suggested with no luck but bumped into a strange behavior on the way. Every time i repair disk permissions in safe mode the same permissions are repaired and everytime i go back the same permissions are still corrupt. This (image below) is what my disk utility always repairs no matter how many times i repair them. To get things a little weirder, if i follow the fix suggested in the other WindowServer related thread and reset SMC and PRAM after repairing these permissions, my computer just turns itself off somewhere half the way of the start chime. Sometimes it behaves like this even if i only repair these permissions and reboot without resetting SMC and PRAM (but mostly when i do these). After this i just turn it on again and it usually boots fine, though one time it remained turning itself off a few more times before i could boot normally.
ps. my mini display port is fried, do you think this could be related and triggering the bug?

It may occur that your Mac is not booting correctly after resetting the SMC and/or PRAM as noted in this thread: Guide: How to solve Yosemite memory leaks and CPU usage
So I wouldn't panic about that as long as your Mac boots normally when not resetting SMC/PRAM.
What do you mean by fried Display Port? Is it just no longer working or is the port mechanically damaged? I don't think this is related to your problems, but hardware issues and their consequences can be unpredictable...

Nov 2, 2014 12:04 PMby substance44,The permissions that it repairs are installedPrinters.plist and displaypolicyd, it seems that they get corrupted every time i boot my computer. And yes i've been following that thread and the fix doesn't work for me.
My display port is fried since i had a problem with a alesis audio monitor that had a faulty power supply which wasn't very stable. I was using my iMac as secondary display to my Macbook, which had the audio monitor connected to it through an external motu soundcard. Everything suddenly turned off and it fried my motu main outs and my display port in the way. So yeah, don't know what is actually fried but it is mechanically damaged. Even so, this happened a while ago and i never had any other issues that could be related so far.

Nov 6, 2014 12:59 PMby Volkward,Well, regarding the permission fix it's the same at my machine, at least for displaypolicyd. But I honestly don't think it's the root cause of our problem.
And I also don't think it is directly related to a second screen or your fried display port because It instantly gets a lot better when I hide the sidebars of safari and mail. In fact, if I hide all sidebars that can be hidden and reduce the transparency effects systemwide, my animations are smooth 95% of the time.
It's still frustrating though, but I think I will live with it. Maybe the upcoming 10.10.1 update will do some magic here...

ds10320, in my case turning off transparency helps a little but it is definitely an issue of extreme cpu usage and memory leaks that apple should solve asap. I'm only affected by the memory leaks and there is a thread that as a possible fix for these issues, Volkward posted it here a few posts before. Try it, it might work for you.

What's causing it seems to be a system process called WindowServer and the only way around it is the fix suggested in this thread which not always works. Many people claim they have this issue after connecting a second display, if you're using a second display try to disconnect it.

Thanks very much for the tips! Unfortunately I tried everything: clean install, turn off transparency, reset everything it could be reseted, repair everything it could be repaired etc (and I have no second display).
For now, I kill from app monitor the windowsserver thread, and I login again. For 3-4 hours it's ok, but then the lag appears again.
My problem is not memory- I have 16GB.
I wonder if is there any lag on the newest MBR13 with Intel Iris Pro. Anybody know for sure?

Nov 8, 2014 10:45 AMby substance44,I guess there isn't much more to do then wait for an update from apple that fixes these issues. One of the problems is memory leakage and i've red reports from people who have 16g of memory and have almost all memory used up. In my case, as soon as i open apps like Safari, Mail, Sunset and a few more my available memory simply goes away for no apparent reason. I have all my 6gb of memory used pretty much all the time, with or without heavy app load.
Not sure about newer models though.
Hope this gets solved soon, it's affecting my productivity big time and i can say it's one of the worst .0 releases of OS X i've witnessed so far, at least in my apple computers.
