Q: iMac 2014 5K Bluetooth Trackpad Problem after sleep

Hi all,

 

I was all excited to get my new iMac 2014 5K two days ago. The display is simply stunning. I am however struggling with a trackpad problem and had several support calls with Apple already.

 

After the iMac goes into sleep (and enters deep sleep after circa 2-3 minutes), it cannot be woken up with trackpad or keyboard anymore, After pressing the power button, it turns on again (no need of restart). The trackpad is by then however useless. The pointer movements are extremely slow and none of the gestures work. I tried the following instructions in different forums but none of them worked. It cannot be that all new iMac 2014 users are having this problem!

 

  1. Unpairing and pairing the bluetooth devices
  2. PRAM reset (multiple times)
  3. SMC reset (multiple times)
  4. Safe boot
  5. Deleting system plist files and restarting
  6. Changing batteries of trackpad.
  7. Turning wifi off (between that I am connected otherwise at 5Ghz with 802.11ac)
  8. Turning off all devices in the house that transmits signals (router, DECT phone etc)
  9. Testing Trackpad with Macbook Air with Yosemite installed (sleep and trackpad works fine with it)
  10. SSD format and reinstalling Yosemite (and no further apps on top of it). This means iMac is as good as out of the box with only Apple bluetooth keyboard and trackpad connected.

 

After the problem starts I see the following messages in Error log

The day before I got the iMac 5K, I sold my perfectly working Late 2013 iMac with Yosemite on it. It had no issues with trackpad.

There people mostly complain about latency and not the sleep problem. Does anyone else face this problem with the new iMac and Yosemite?

    I bought the iMac with retina 5K display this past Sunday and have been having the same issues.  Everything worked fine out of the the box and then after awaking it from sleep mode, I lost scrolling functionality on mouse and media/screen functions (volume, brightness, etc.) on keyboard.  It shows as if it's connected but then when you go into the preferences section for each, it doesn't show options for full functionality for either. I restarted it and everything worked again but then just wound up losing the functionality again after it goes to sleep.  I thought I was taking crazy pills!  It's good to find out now when I search this issue that it's popping up that others are having the same problem (If you can call that a "good" thing...but at least it's not just me and hoping for an Apple fix now).  I had a magic trackpad that i connected too and the same thing.  It has basically functionality but loses the ability to scroll and all that multi-touch stuff. Also, and not sure if this is related, it stated my batteries in it were almost dead even though they were basically brand new (albeit I did take them from a bluetooth keyboard I had put them in week before that I had barely used....but who knows if they somehow drained that badly while in there).

    Hi there,

    Same issue here another all top spec iMac 5k once it wakes from sleep the track pad or mouse won't scroll and the keyboard functions are all messed up. i.e. volume buttons don't work they activate a multiple display (as in F3).

    Looking to notify apple but will try waking from power button not BT device

    i believe the best solution besides notifying apple is to prevent the imac to sleep. thus we dont have to deal with the wake process.   i dont think it will take too long for apple to fix the problem, cant imageine apple sell problematic computers for a month or even two. so after a month or two we will have a fix from apple, or we can demend apple to replace one for us.

    i talked to apple sales team the other day, they say since i have an apple care contact case within 14 days of purchase, if apple care cant figure out the problem, or if its a hardware problem, i can get a return-refund or exchange even out of the 14 days period

    Its fine to sleep your mac; just disable 'wake from Bluetooth' and wake via the Power Button as an (interim!) fix.

    This is a software issue, a new iMac won't fix the issue. Notifying Apple, as we have all done, and registering a bug is the best way to get them to address this quickly.

    I thought Apple Care starts after the first year. In the first year you are covered under the normal warranty, even for replacements. This is, if you buy Apple care with the product or before the first year ends.

    I always believed that buying Apple Care together with the product is giving away money to Apple which you could have given an year later. Am I wrong here?

    Im in the same boat, brand new retina iMac out of the box, mouse stops scrolling after sleep and computer says keyboard and mouse are not connected even though they are still marginally useable. 

     

    specs:

    4GHZ i7

    AMD Radeon R9 M295X

    32 Gigs of RAM

    1TB SSD

    apple care, from my past experience, is just simply an extension. indeed it starts after the first year, but apple care is just the name of extended warranty program. within one year, it's called warranty, between one and  three years, its called apple care, that's the only difference i believe.

     

    right, there's no need to buy ac immediately, just buy it on like the 11th month if you feel needed, sometimes you won't keep the computer for even more than one year (like you upgrade every year)

    but apple care PLUS on the other hand, has to be purchase within 14days and a genius bar appointment

    by disabling wake from bt, you mean don't touch them before wake? i don't find that setting lol.

     

    by demanding replacements, i don't mean I'm actually gonna get one, just this, i believe, give them a sense of urgency. since sending out a large amount of replacements will cost them a lot more.

     

    i've actually done one of these replacements though apple care before (on my mbp), they will issue you an case and ask you to ship your device back first. at this point, it's 100% up to you whether keep using your device or send it back. and you can hold the device for couple weeks before you send it out for replacement (just tell them you have to work on it for the time being)

    Hi,

    it's the last of the 3 advanced preference settings under 'Bluetooth', and called "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer'.

    Of course, you can also just 'not touch' BT until you wake via the power button, and all is 'well' - disabling this just makes it easier not to hit it by mistake, until Apple has this fixed...

    Bluetooth Keyboard and Magic Mouse

     

    The symptoms I am experiencing are identical to those of 'vsopdx' including details such as delay when failure is eminent, two presses of spacebar required to 'wake' and mouse to be clicked before pointer is active, all in order to get a 'vanilla' mouse.  Looks as though the only option is to send a bug report and pray for an update sometime soon.

     

    I phoned support today and was asked to create a new 'test' user.  Have done that and will try testing more later to see if the fault is still present on a new user account.  A quick test with a wait time of 30 minutes did not reproduce the fault.

    Add me to the list. 5k iMac top-spec, straight out of the box two days ago.Scrolling failure on coming back from sleep, plus all the other symptoms exactly as all the above. Apple support useless: didn't have a clue. Spec below:

    • 4.0GHz quad i7 at 4.4GHz
    • 32GB RAM
    • 1TB flash memory
    • AMD Radeon 4GB
    • Magic Mouse (sic)

    Hi all, I have the similar problem also. I just received my brand new 5K iMac with top configuration yesterday. After going through the initial settings without installing any software or data, I left it idle for few minutes while cleaning up the packaging boxes. When I returned, I found out that the iMac was in display sleep mode, and could not respond to any press on the keyboard pad. However, I managed to wake it up by pressing the power button, when it woke up from the sleep mode, the touch pad did not work anymore with the bluetooth connection on. I kept having the problem again even after numerous reboots. I called up the apple care this morning, they guided me through few debugging steps and finally ended up with a full re-installation of the Yosemite and the problem is still there. Unfortunately, they have no clue at all. For the whole incident, it took up 5 hours in a single day and I was transferred from one team to another team from 4 different countries and different departments. Apple quality and customer services have been deteriorating lately. It is too big to fail.
