Yes it will. As long as the sim is not locked to another phone. Having said that, I recommend you call up SoftBank and confirm the same.

Seriously guys, it's really not that difficult....

If you buy it SIM free in Japan directly from Apple, it will be unlocked and you can use it with any carrier on any network in the world.

Yes, any iPhone purchased in Japan (unlocked/sim-free or contract) will have the camera shutter sound permanently enabled by law.

Besides a jailbreak, there is no way to disable the camera shutter sound on iPhones purchased in Japan (unlocked/sim-free or contract).

How are people getting on with reserving and buying in store now? Is it still really hard to get them?

People living in Japan might be interested in the recent announcement that carriers are finally planning to allow device unlocking, for the first time ever. Should come into effect next year.

I also suspect the reason Apple started selling unlocked ("SIM free") devices is because the exclusive agreement with SoftBank ended, and now AU/KDDI as well as NTT/DoCoMo are selling their iPhones. Makes sense to buy the handsets, unlocked, directly from Apple in that case.

i spent 10 days in Japan in the last few weeks and it was extremely hard to reserve a sim free iphone 6 from Apple stores. Mostly carrier locked stock.

Here's a question for those who live in Japan and have bought an unlocked handset from Apple: What do you do next? As far as I know, none of the carriers have BYO-device plans. To get one of their SIMs, they force you to buy a handset as well. Anyone got any experience with this?

Oh - and I'm aware of the SIM-only companies like B-Mobile, and have tried them, but honestly they were a complete waste of time & money for me. You have to go with a real Softbank, AU or DoCoMo SIM to get a decent full-featured voice & data service.

I don't mind signing a contract with a carrier, it's just that if I already have an unlocked handset, I don't want to be forced into buying another one just to get a SIM.

for me, i already have a plan from them. my iphone 4s. i just transfered my sim. but if you dont have, softbank and docomo now accept sim only plans.

    Harry,

Does your uncle live in Japan or just visiting?

IF living there, simple , ask him to go to the Apple japan site and order a SIM FREE iphone , it will be delivered to his house in 7-10 days and he can bring it or send it to you. As I mentioned above and posted a screen shot it works with Vdfn India and will work with other carriers as well.

If he is a temp visitor , he can reserve it and pick and pay at store, advantage is you can avoid sales tax if you show your visa. But this process is completely luck. For step by step details on reservation, please refer to my above posts.

    Hope this helped
