Q: QR Code & Find My iPhone

Hi,

Do I need any App to use the "QR Code", or "Find My iPhone" functions?

Thanks.

For your phone to be findable from another device or computer you only need to have Setting > iCloud > Find My iPhone turned on.

If you want to use your phone to find another device you would install the Find My iPhone app and use that. If you want to find from a computer you can just use an internet browser and go to https://www.icloud.com/#find

Other than for use in the Passbook app I thing you would want to install a 3rd party app unless there is some functionality I'm not aware of.

    What about the QR Code?

Do I need any App to scan the QR Code?

    Thanks.

I believe the Passbook app has QR code scanning for use in it only. You may want to install a 3rd party app. Other than Passbook I'm not aware of any built in QR code functionality -- although there may be some that I'm not aware of.

    Hi, Fox,

So what does the App "Find My iPhone" do? And, is it the same with the "Find My iPhone" in Settings -> iCloud?

    Thanks.

No, it is 2 different but related things.

Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone being on is necessary if you want to be able to find your phone using the website https://www.icloud.com/#find or from another iPhone/iPad using the Find My iPhone app. It also turns on Activation Lock so that if it is ever stolen it is pretty much useless to the thief. Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone being turned on is very important.

The Find My iPhone App is much less important. It is primarily of use if you have more than one Apple device (e.g., your iPhone and an iPad or MacBook laptop) and want to find the other device from your phone rather than going to a computer and using https://www.icloud.com/#find

    Hi, Fox,

I accidentally installed the Find My iPhone App. How do I remove it from my iPhone 6 Plus?

    Thanks.

You remove it the same as any other app -- press and hold down on the app icon until all of the apps start to wiggle and then tap the x at upper left of any you want to delete. The press the Home button (bottom center) to stop the apps wiggling.

BTW, what does my iPhone 6 Plus do when I remove an app? Is it the same as "deleting a program from my Macs"?

More, can I zero out my iPhone 6 Plus like zero out my Macs? (So removed files, such as the apps, or the photos, will not be brought back by some special software).

    Thanks.

The only zeroing out that I know of is when you erase the contents and restore as new via iTunes. Then the phone is restored to factory settings and the customization / personalization is wiped out

    Hi,

So when I restore my iPhone 6 Plus via iTunes, it writes "zeros" to my iPhone HDD too?

Can't be the entire HDD zeroed out, 128GB takes a while to be entirely zero out.

    Thanks.

Following are Apple's instructions of what you should do before selling or giving away an iPhone. What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support The erase is via Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Contents and Settings. I don't know for a fact that it actually writes zeros but I think it is the most that you can do.

I've not heard of anyone recovering data from an erased iPhone. If you are using a passcode (including Touch ID) then the data on the phone is always encrypted. See iOS: Understanding data protection - Apple Support but note that with iOS8 the screen it refers to is at Settings > Touch ID & Passcode rather than Settings > General > Passcode as stated in the article.
