My iPhone 5  is also not working times about 2 weeks now, thought last night's update might fix it but it did not.

If I scream,  some of what I say is heard and the "sound wave bar" slightly moves, thought it might be the mic but after seeing this post I don't think so.

This phone is only about 2 months old, however I'm afraid my 2 year insurance plan just expired, my original screen cracked and the camera malfunctioned so the "Apple Genius" pulled this phone off the shelf.

Think I'd prefer the cracked screen.

I am having this issue as well.  I have a iPhone 5 GSM Model MD634LL/A with iOS 8.1 Build (12B411).  I have tried the following:

    • Reset all settings
    • erase all contents and setup as new
    • restore the device and setup as new
    • DFU Restore the device and setup as new
    • verified the mic is working with phone calls, Google app, dictation, voice control, and voice memos, no mic issues found.
    • tried changing the voice settings from female to male
    • tried changing the language used
    • tried turning on and off Siri and restarting
    • tried it on multiple networks

None of these steps have resolved the issue.  This all seems to have started after trying to enable the "Hey Siri" feature, which I could not get to work.

The turning on of the "Hey Siri" feature may not be relevant but I have noticed a couple critical things.  One, it is not a hardware issue on my phone.  Two, it does work with an external Bluetooth device.  (Since Siri is working with my Ford Fiesta connectin via Bluetooth). Even with Bluetooth turned off, and nothing configured, Siri is not even recognizing any audio input from the built in microphone.  The issue started after the 8.0.2 update for me and was behaving as expected in the 8.0 and 8.0.1 builds for this model.  Given it is working with dictation and voice control, which are driven by the same software mechanics as Siri the install seems to be successful for the sub system settings, but there must be some issue with the Siri App.  I believe that at least for the issues that I can reproduce here on my phone is due to a faulty build and specifically with the Siri App not able to call on the internal Mic functions.  As for a solution, I do not think there is any possibility for anything other than an update, which is why I am describing this issue in great detail so the issues can be addressed and resolved in a future update!

After using Siri in my car through BT I am experiencing the same issue as discribed here. Unfortunately none of the tips worked for me.

So add me to the list, Apple!

Hello! I'm from Germany, so please I apologize, if English is not so good! I have the same problem! And all done! The following I've noticed yet: When siri is off the voice control recognizes my voice. Waves knock out! Siri turned on also the dictation in the mail / news apps don't listen my voice! Video recording backwards can hear my voice .... the forward Videofunction do not listen?! Do you also have this malfunction?

Thanks for the detailed testing, Tyler!

I want to encourage all people seeing this bug to either:

    1) Contact Apple support, listing the steps you've tried, and ask them to file a report with engineering

    and/or

    2) Supply feedback here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

These discussions forums are hardly (if at all) monitored by Apple, and you will help get this fixed if many people let Apple know.

I just got the iphone 6 plus and updated to IOS 8.2. The "Hey Siri" does not work for me either. I have been reading tons of stuff on trying to fix this and so far they only way I can get it to work is if it's connected to the power cord. I've tried all the suggestion here and nothing works.

Just a bit of input, the "Hey Siri" feature is suppose to only work when the device is connected to power.  In system preferences just below the toggle button it describes the feature and specifies that power is needed for this feature to activate.   Here is Apple's technical note on the subject.  About Siri  Take notice about the "Hey Siri" feature about midway through to the article.  I would say that it is working as expected on your iPhone 6.

Same issue here. iPhone 6+. I've had it for 2 days. I used Siri a few times with Carplay (Pioneer AVH-4000NEX) but tonight it just stopped working and that was it. I can't get it to work anymore. When I press and hold the home button, the Siri screen opens up, but Siri never beeps so I can start talking. If I press the microphone icon on the screen, nothing happens. I have iOS 8.1.

Again, I want to point out that Apple is not monitoring these discussions. Are people contacting Apple Support in order to report these problems, or filing feedback?

I to have the problem. I talked to Apple support and they are telling me that 'Hey Siri' only works when your device is plugged into power. I tried it and it works. As soon as I plugged in my iPhone 6+ to power and said Hey Siri, she snapped right up. GO APPLE!!

No, its not GO APPLE !, the issue you've described is not a bug and so Apple have just pointed out to you how it is supposed to work. The problem for most of the posts on here is that Siri and some other voice controlled apps have stopped working, while other apps still work as expected.

I took my iPhone 5 into a "genius" the other day and explained the issue, but the only response I could get was that it must be a hardware issue with the front microphone, despite my pointing out that the microphone works fine with some apps. In fact, I've just noticed that it can search Google by voice perfectly well, while Siri still hears nothing.

    Not very impressive Apple !

LOL!!!  'GO APPLE!' I was being sarcastic.

I should have been clear. 'Apple strikes again' is what I should have said.

It was working before the upgrade, without having my phone plugged into power. Its really sad...

I'm heading into store tomorrow to swap out my replacement Iphone 5 as the one they gave me to replace my other faulty one is having major touchscreen issues and white blocks all across the top of the screen which seem to periodically make the phone go completely insane for no good reason!
