Q: iWeb not working on yosemite

I installed Yosemite OSX version 10.10 and iWeb is working weird.

If you open a previously existing project, it won't allow to add shapes or text boxes. For instance, when you select to add a Texto box, it will draw the box, bur as soon as you release the mouse button, the drawing disappears leaving no text box at all.

Any suggestions?

Yes, I know that and I'm going to migrate to EverWeb. My problem is though that unless I can find out how to be able to view my domain file once I have opened iWeb then I can't really copy and paste the text and photos into EverWeb! As I said, everything worked fine under Mavericks, it just doesn't show up in Yosemite.

Yes, so you have 2 choices:-

    1.  You either upgrade to iWeb 09 or version 3 by going to Amazon and purchasing the boxed set of either iLife 09 or iLife 11, both of which include iWeb 09 and installing that on your Mac and hoping that this works with Yosemite.

    2.  If not, then if your site is hosted on a web host, then you go to that web host and using an ftp programme such as Cyberduck or Transmit or anything else that you may have, you download the html files for your site to the desktop on your Mac and then you can open your html pages with Safari and you can copy and paste text and photos from here into EverWeb when you re-build your site.

Also, iWeb 08 or version 2 did not work with Mavericks, let along Yosemite, so how you expect version 1 to work correctly with Yosemite, I don't really know.

Thanks for your helpful reply, Ethmoid. My site is hosted on a web host and I use Cyberduck for uploading the pages - so that is a good idea to download the html files from the host. I'll try that. (Of course, the index.html etc in the Site folder to which I have been publishing my pages are all images when they open in Safari).

As I said before, my old version 1.1.2 (migrated from Tiger) worked perfectly well under Mavericks (new iMac bought in Jan this year) and I just assumed it would also work under Yosemite. In fact to be honest I never even thought about it! Actually, If I click on show package contents of the domain, then I still see all the images etc (though not my text) - so at least the domain info is there - it's just not being shown when iWeb is opened.

Actually I have just downloaded a couple of html files from the web host using Cyberduck. However, when I open them in Safari I get a blank outline page showing where pictures and text should be, but the text is not there at all (nor the images). In each box there is a little blue box with a question mark (I think that normally indicates the image is not found) - if I right click on the little box, and select Inspect Element, then I do see all the text (though not the images of course). If I download some of the image files, then they appear as separate images - though not on the html page.

Update! Maybe I have to download every html files from my web host site before it works?

I had the perhaps naive idea that if I go into Time Machine and go back to before I got my computer back and the upgrade to Yosemite was done, then maybe I could double click the domain site and see what I got. Well, it turns out that the iWeb folder is nowhere to be found in the Library/ApplicationSupport folder! In fact several others (such as AddressBook) are also not there. Strange.

Another problem I would have if I buy the iLife 9 package is that it is on DVD - my new iMac does not, of course, have DVD/CD capability and that would be an additional expense to buy an external player.

I have in the meantime copied my latest domain file over to my old Power PC G5 Tiger machine and that loaded up nicely. So either I can continue updating my website from there or I can use EverWeb and cut and paste and transfer from the old machine to the new one by e-mail or memory stick!

Yes, well it goes without saying that you would download all the html and css files that make up your site and not just one.

I know that the new iMac's don't have a DVD drive built in, but they do not cost that much to purchase.  If the Apple one is too expensive, then you can always purchase another cheaper one, that I am sure would still work.

Also, yes, you could continue to use iWeb on your older Mac, but in the long run remember, that iWeb is not supported, so you are using a product that is not developed or supported any longer, so would it not be best to switch to EverWeb, that is actively supported and updated and has far more features out of the box than iWeb ever had?

Also, remember that it would not take you that long to drag and drop and copy and paste into EverWeb and it is easy to use too and it works with Yosemite too.

I did go in and download all the files as I should have done in the first place (only for one page to test) and I got the website up correctly. However, it appears that the html page etc is still an image (thus just the same as when I publish to my folder called Sites) - thus I cannot cut and past from there. On the other hand,  I can copy and paste easily enough from the opened site on my old computer and transfer the text and images to EverWeb (which you will be glad to hear I have downloaded, watched all the videos and am trying out!) by means of a memory stick/flash drive.

Thanks very much again for all your helpful comments and support.

    Regards

    David

    Toad,

Following our conversation several weeks in the making, I opted for EverWeb to rebuild my iWeb site. Now comes the question I hope you have as I'm ready to publish. I want to keep my Dropbox site, which currently free, if possible. If I have to upgrade, so be it. But...

In EverWeb, when I got to the publishing point, I became stymied. I watched the video tutorial, so selected the FTP Server. Do you know how I find the relevant in formation to complete the other blanks? Or do I upgrade to Dropbox Pro to get that information?

I don't use DropBox so you'll have to contact DropBox support to find out what the correct ftp settings are.

I know I have to migrate my webpages off iWeb. In the works.

New laptop and from I'd read, thought I could install iLife11 from the thumb drive with my previous laptop.

Yosemite 10.10.3 says no. Any workarounds? Thanks.

hi all, i just found this thread and while it is not exactly my problem, i am hoping you can help.  :-)  i have iweb '09 (3.01)  it was working perfectly on my now old mac which is OS 10.5.8.  last night i finally opened/initiated a one year old macbook pro that is running yosemite.  i saved everything to HD and moved to the new mac.  after the transfer of all files from old to new, iweb was on the desktop and i was excited.

but today i tried to make some tweaks....it looked like it was saving and even publishing, but then when i checked on the web, the page was actually exactly the same as before.  instead, as an experiment, i went to the old mac (10.5.8) and make the same tweaks, and they were saved, for real, and are on the web now.

i know i need to migrate to another website, :-) i know  :-) but meantime, there must be some glitch that is allowing me to publish from the old computer but not the new.  like i said, the weird thing is that it seems like it is doing everything - edits, pub etc, but then when i check the result, it is still the old version.

ps don't know if it matters but i am on dreamhost and i also discovered they changed my server recently.  but i changed it on both iwebs, old and new computer.  could there be a glitch related to that?  perchance?

    thx again!!!

Unfortunately, this is the problem with using an unsupported product.  With each new OS that comes out, it will become less and less compatible.

There have been some glitches noted with both Yosemite and El Capitan, so my suggestion would be to keep using the old Mac to update and publish your website.  Just keep doing this so you don't run into problems until you can find some new web software that you like.

You will need to make the change soon, as iWeb has not been supported for the last 3 to 4 years and there will come a time when it will stop working, full stop.  Try to make the change sooner rather than later, as this will be easier.
